Right in the heart of St. John's and right behind the fruit and vegetable market, you will find this quiet patch of land that has a gate that surrounds it. A huge statue of V.C Bird dominates the space with a plaque that describes his accomplishments. A nice Antiguan history lesson and worth the stop.

This small monument is near the market and the bus station in a triangular square in a busy intersection. It depicts the bust of Vere Cornwall Bird, the first prime minister of Antigua who helped this nation gain its independence. Interesting but also not worth a complete detour to visit it.

This rather gaudy monument is rather false in my opinion, if you read in depth about the history of Antigua, I recommend 'A Small Place' by Jamaica Kincaid, you will understand that this man was not the hero he is made out to be.
Very annoying that the airport is named after him.

This "tribute" to Antigua's national hero is either shameful or laughable depending on your mood. An over sized, poorly painted statue of V C Bird rising out of the sidewalk in a poorly selected location... I guess I will stick with LAUGHABLE. Poor guy must be rolling over in his grave.

I saw this monument on many photos before our trip but still decided to go and see on my own as it is very different and unusual from what I saw so far! The Monument is surrounded by metal fence, the gates are locked and you cannot come closer. So you have to stick your phone or photo camera between fence's bars. Too much crowd around as the market just behind the monument as well as bus station on a side.

A huge statue in the middle of a really busy area. Well maintained and safe to vsiit; next to a market selling mostly fruits/veg.

Worth a look if you are in the area. I was geocaching and had a quick look at the information boards. He was one of Antigua's most loved public figures and first Prime Minister of the country. Serving office from 1981 to 1994, he pioneered the nation's education and medical systems. Locals still leave flowers by the monument on a daily basis.

As we set out on out island tour, our tour guide stopped to show us this interesting monument. He must have been well liked by the people as there were lots of flowers, memorials left there.
Roger Taxi tours provided a private tour of several stops that included the Wyland Wall Mural off of Old Parnum Road for a photo op, Devil’s Bridge, Half Moon Bay, Donkey Sanctuary, Turner’s, Darkwood and Ffryes Beaches. We also made unplanned stops at the Sir Vivian Richard Cricket Stadium, Long Bay to check out the Grand Pineapple property and Willoughby Bay/Crossroads Rehab Facility. We started at 9am and were back to Sandals Grande Antigua by 2:15pm. Roger provided lots of historical and cultural information about Antigua and Barbuda throughout our drive around the island.
