What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

Probably my favourite square

Probably my favourite square in Havana. Many great old buildings and a few cafe and restaurants to choose from. Including a micro Brewery. Make sure you come at night and day.

Lots of people were gathered here when we visited. Lots of lovely restaurants surround the plaza... some too expensive. There are snacks and drinks to buy as well. But my children had a blast hopping and skipping the old cannon balls that are cemented into the Plaza. They met other children and played, too. I saw another tourist child join... More

Beautiful square to hang out in. Beautifully restored with interesting art, namely a sculpture of a naked woman riding a rooster.

La Plaza Vieja is a bustling Place of activity. After you see the sights around the Plaza, take a seat and do some people watching. Tourists and locals alike mingle here enjoying the beautiful Cuban climate.

We were staying on Mercaderes and ate our first meal in the Plaza. It was both the most expensive and the least tasty meal that we ate during our entire trip to Cuba. The one plus was a Cuban band that was playing in the square for patrons at all the restaurants to hear. Get away from the Plaza for... More

Part of the old Havana, this square is part of the traditional tour of the city. The place is sorrounded by many beautiful and historical buildings, is also full of restaurants and some of then offer music sometimes. Many events take place on the square, the day we were passing by there were some street carnival going on (really cool).

The Plazas in Cuba are reminiscent of those in Florence and Madrid. Beautiful buildings with open space for informal gatherings, but in Cuba you add multiple local individuals serenading the crowds for tips. Make sure you take time and visit all the plazas in Havana Vieja.

After dinner, I walked down a narrowed path but almost turned back until I saw some lights peeking through the small corner, so I continued on and stumbled upon this amazing plaza! In a way, it's a tourist trap, but the drinks were pretty awesome and fairly cheap. Definitely recommend it! Had such a blast sharing a table with a... More
