What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

The odl square is now fully restored and hence it has a rather reconstructed, clinical, almost sterile feel to it. Much different from the rest of Havana Vieja which is partially still quite dilapidated and hence very atmospheric. However not a bad place to drink a coffee and do some people watching.

Plaza Vieja was one of our favourite destinations in Havana, which we passed through or visited frequently. The plaza is surrounded by some fabulous renovated buildings (and pictures of pre-renovation). It also a number of good bars and restaurants. It was always busy - from school children playing in the square to tourists. Definitely worth a visit.

Just down from our hotel Raquel, this square has some nicely restored buildings and a beautiful one being restored. A put on a corner has a very interesting way of delivering beer to the table.

The Plaza Vieja is one of the four main plazas in Habana Vieja. With most of the buildings now restored as part of the UNESCO project, it reflects the historic past of Cuba, long prior to the revolution. In the south-west corner their is a restaurant named La Muralla which provides an ideal location for a relaxing grilled lunch and... More

This plaza is very nice, the architecture is great there are several restaurants and stores there that you can visit but is very expensive, very touristy and it's super crowded. Is nice to spend sometime there but walk to other parts to see more locals and the real Cuban lifestyle

As a solo traveler, I found much of Old Havana and the surrounding area to be disconcerting. It is decayed and full of unhappy, aggressive people. I state at a Convent hotel near this Old Square and found it to be a nice safe place to walk around and dine, even at night. Obama dined near here when he visited... More

The before and after pictures show the change. This is now a beautiful square with a fabulous coffee shop in the corner - slow service but worth it for the coffee. At night, the cafes in the opposite corner play outdoor music and there is a wonderful brewery that serves locally made beer with a good young crowd around after... More
