Overview
More
What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

Not a place with a lot of sites to see, but we were in an airbnb very close to Plaza Vieja and we really liked the area. It is full of bars, shops, and anything you could need in Old Havana.

A few shops but mostly eateries. The restaurants are adorable and overlook the square. Lots of outdoor seating, very little shade though. Wonderful street vendors, I recommend sticking to the touristy areas for the nicest selection of cafes and shops.

This was one of the locations where we visited that we felt was not just a tourist destination. The local people especially young people, seemed to be out and about to see each other. There are restaurants that have outdoor tables though not all are...More

We stumbled upon the square, interesting shops, great drinks.. a little crazy when there is a ship in.. but well done, totally not expecting the level of tourist care.

This restoration of Havana's most famous square (plaza) was most impressive. "Before photos" were posted outside most of the building to illustrate how much had been done to these wonderful old landmark buildings. Extremely photogenic at any time of day. We loved the coffee roaster...More

Walking in havana is a delight. Every corner holds a secret place. Restaurants, tends and plazas! Vienna was one of my faves! With restaurants and Cafes surrounding it, makes a perfect spot to people watch and practice the Art of Observation!

Hi. We also did a two day through NCL. We arrived in the morning. Tip regarding that. When they announce to you where to get your "number" for debarkation, be sure to get in that line about 15 minutes before they hand them... More

I assume, since you only have 12 hours, that you are visiting for the day as part of a cruise. I would recommend that you hire a local car/driver/guide. I used Nosotros Cubameamos and really liked them. My guide was... More

You can get a taxi if you like easily probably for about 5 CUC if you negotiate. It isn't that far though and the walk lets you get a better sense of Havana. I was there in March and the founding location of Havana was under... More
