What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

My girlfriend and I along with her father and his girlfriend attended here the week of February 12 to 19, 2017 and it was a magical experience. The sky was a beautiful crisp blue with a few white clouds. The location of Plaza Vieja is in an area near a shipyard, the harbor, the main road, and a small area... More

One of the main squares in Havana, get a seat at a cafe and watch the world go by. A primary school is set right on the square, families practice football, music fills the air.

The Square is a must see when you go to Havana it's bustling with activity and tourists there's a traditional Cuban Café however the service is deplorable there. Be prepared to wait excessively to get served but all in all worth the wait and great people watching. There is a must-see museum right on the corner in the square that... More

This square is a very beautiful part of Habana Vieja. The buildings around the square have been totally restored, and there are lots of places to have a drink and watch the world go by. However, it isn't my favourite square- in my opinion, the cathedral square has more charm.

Visited a couple of times on my trip. A great place to people watch. Interesting buildings on and around the plaza. A must see when in Old Havana.

Make sure you stop in the coffee shop at the corner of the square to buy some freshly roasted coffee beans to bring home. I forgot which corner, but you have a 1 in 4 chance of hitting it first try. Our local friends told us that their favorite coffee could be bought here, so we did. Soooo glad I... More

A lovely plaza with nice restaurated builidings (unlike most of the buildings in Havana). El Museo del Chocolate(nut actually a museum) is close and you can visit it after leaving the Plaza.

Our airbnb was right down the street so I spent a fair amount of time in this square which was always busy. There are many restaurants, a coffee place and beautiful buildings. Be sure to visit camera obscura as well (we almost missed the attraction but was really glad we went).

So..... my visit was coloured by a bad experience of having my cell phone stolen out of my pocket, but I should have known better. The Square itself is charming & if you're into people watching, - & American vintage car watching- it's a great place to be.
