Tough trip to the top but amazing view! Combined with trip Baconoa and Siboney. To get some fresh air which is difficult to find downtown Santiago de Cuba.

Before setting out for our adventure, we stayed at the La Gran Piedra, which gave us time to acclimatize to the high altitude of our hike. A group of six members of the St. Croix Hiking Association during our trip to Cuba this year, we hiked Pico Turquino 6,500 ft., above sea level, and we start at sea level from... More

The Big Rock, as it is known in English is a place that would enchant the most demanding picture hunter. Accessible either by hiking or by car you must, first, stop by the botanical garden that's right before reaching the base of the rock and get thrilled by the powerful blossom of the exotic plants. Carry on, get to the... More

The landscape there is unique, worth the visit especially if you're looking for a rest from the heat of the nearby Santiago

Our casa organised a taxi for us to visit La Gran Piedra for 60CUC including waiting time. It's a very long uphill road from the main highway but in good condition and not busy. There's a hotel and car park at top - you need to go into the hotel to pay the 2CUC fee to climb to the top.... More

You certainly don't have to have marathon aspiration or experience, just the drive to keep plodding upwards, the 459 stone steps to the summit. I can't remember how long it took because i was solely concentrating on my breathing while appraising the mesmerising views. The apex is topped by a huge rock, very huge and on this clear day our... Unfortunately it was a foggy day when we went there, but the views must be amazing from up there! The road to reach La Gran Piedra is steep, but OK. We went there with our rental car which was tiny and not too powerful and managed to get there alright. When we visited, there was almost noone else there, which... More

On our last day in Santiago, we took a private taxi to La Gran Piedra (the Big Rock), a beautiful drive up to the restaurant at the foot of Gran Piedra. From there, a small contribution (CUC 4 but includes a drink!) is paid to allow you to take the stair case behind the restaurant to the top. On the... More
