I had an amazing two-week holiday in December 2020 in Varadero and spend most of the time with Darien and his team. I am a semi experienced kite surfer and was not looking for lessons but rather for storage of my equipment and someone to help me starting and landing the kite. Although I never booked any lessons I got so many tips from the instructors and made a lot of progress. They were even going on a 20 km downwinder trip with me and were showing me how to foil. I also saw them teaching other tourists and there is no doubt that these guys know what they are doing. I will definitely come again and can highly recommend this school to everyone who wants to learn kiteboarding but also to experienced drivers. Due to the embargo it is very difficult for the school to get equipment (don’t worry they still have enough gear to teach you), therefore if you have some used equipment you could get in touch with them before your holidays and make a deal in return for lessons or so. Even though they didn’t ask for it I also left some of my equipment there. Something which does not apply just to the school but to all Cubans: they have big problems to buy imported things with their local currency (that can be trivial things like soap or underwear), therefore if you want to support the locals better pay them in USD or EUR instead of with Cuban pesos. Dariens School is a bit difficult to find, if you do not see the boys at the beach ask for the Olympique swimming pool. Alternatively you could just contact Darien via email.

Julio was my instructor and he was excellent. He was patient, knowledgeable and was excellent at communicating what I was doing and how to make corrections to get better. I am a 45 year old woman who had only taken a short introduction course before coming to Cuba. Within 4 hours of lessons Julio had me out of the water and riding for the first time! It was exhilarating! He took me to a shallow bay area without any other riders which made it so much easier to learn.

We did 3 days of lessons with Darien and Julio, and they were easygoing, friendly, and very professional. It was a great experience, and the conditions are fantastic in a special bay which is absolutely perfect for beginner riders - it is shallow, with good onshore wind, very small waves, and no other kitesurfers around !!

Mission complete! In two days of training my instructor Julio made me ride first straights on my own! Beeing a zero-level newbie (and in general not very good at learning sports techniques), I have become completely independent in taking the right position, water-starting the kite, standing up the board and riding it. And believe me - it is a very nice feeling when you stand up on the board and ride it; and it is much easier than all that preparatory work you do before, like taking position, controlling the kite, holding the board etc :). So, now I know how it feels and have the motivation to practice on my own! P.S. Take sun protection seriously - make sure you have sun-protective clothing (also called SPF or UV) with you: long-sleeved rash-guards, full length board-shorts, balaclava to protect your neck and cheeks, sunglasses and sunscreen.
