About
Varadero Golf Club is the only 18 hole72 par golf course in Cuba. It has all the facilities, services and equipment associated with the practice of golf. It was opened in 1999. It was designed by architect Les Furber, President of the Canadian company Golf Design Services LTD (GDS), combining three (3) golfing architectures Classic design, Challenging or Target Golf design and Links design. It covers a narrow 3.5 Km strip located between "Los Cactus ", "Tuxpan", "Bella Costa", Melia "Las Americas", "Golf & Suites Resort", "Melia Varadero", "Sol Club Palmeras", and "Sol Club Sirenas" hotels. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE GOLF COURSE - 18 holes; 72 par: 5 par 5 holes and 5 par 3 holes; remaining 8 holes are par 4. - 6 269 linear meters of trajectory between the First Tee or starting point and Green 18. Three golfing architectures have been combined: 1. Classic design, broad roads bordered by trees, wide and scarcely protected greens. 2. Challenging or Target Golf design, modern style with narrow roads and heavily protected greens surrounded by sand traps and lakes. The Varadero Golf Course has several salt water lakes that connect directly with the sea, a feature that makes it almost unique worldwide. 3. Links design, with holes located alongside the sea following the shoreline, introducing the ocean as another obstacle in the game. It allows golf players to combine all the technical elements of the game with the beauty, peacefulness and quiet of the surroundings. Our Golf Club continues expanding its most ambitious golf facilities projects by opening the first golf academy operated by PGA professionals and instructors from the Cuban Golf Federation. Practice areas (300 meters for long games, 2 putting greens, 1 shipping green, 2 bunkers) are structured to allow instruction to be imparted indoors, including the use of accessories, golf clubs and practice balls. The Golf Academy has designed various programs following international sports guidelines, rules and ethics, open to all professionals and students who wish to enjoy this fascinating game amidst breathtaking beaches and our wonderful culture. The Club House of the Varadero Golf Club has a golf players´ reception at the Caddie House, also including a Pro Shop and Snack Bar. We have facilities and experience in organizing international golf tournaments. We have hosted two European Challenge Tour Grand Finals (1999 and 2000). Golfing area 39.7 Ha. Greens 1.5 Ha. Ante-Greens 2.0 Ha. Tees 2.0 Ha. Fairways 23.9 Ha. Rough 10.3 Ha. Indigenous woods 3.3 Ha. Lagoons 13.4 Ha. Internal roads: 3.7 Ha. Parks and other architectural features: 0.9 Ha. Ignore any review saying this course is in bad shape - people if you want a PGA course then don't golf in Cuba - this course is amazing - beautiful views and people. Yes the fairways have dry spots - but they DO NOT have the resources that PGA courses do!!! Think about where you are they work so hard to keep this course in the best shape they can. The greens had their grass a bit higher than what we are use to but after a few games figured it out. They have new carts and they are great. We stayed at the Melia so our golf was included. The only downfall is the cost - they charge $44 American for carts - $5 a day American to store your clubs - everything is in American this is tough on your Canadian tourists! If our golf was not included we likely would have only done the course once just to pricey, but it is beautiful.

Despite what my wife might say, when we selected a hotel to stay at in Cuba this year, the presence of a golf course was not one of my considerations. Indeed, it was actually my wife who pointed out the existence of Varadero G.C. to me and she who highlighted that by staying at Melia Las Americas, you also get unlimited green fees. In fact, to that point, and despite having been to Cuba several times before, I was completely unaware that Cuba even had a golf course. I know she will never believe me but it is true. However, even having learnt about the course, I had mixed views and low expectations, especially having read a few reviews about it.
My wife has ME/CFS and therefore needs lots of rest and a slow wake-up in the mornings. The golf course therefore offered a perfect solution. I could be on the first tee at 7.15am and could be finished and back to the room by 10.30, just in time for her to have had a gentle rise and a bit of breakfast, all un-disturbed by my mucking/crashing about. Perfect. All sounded good, but what about the course? If you read some reviews, you will get the impression that it is basically a piece of rough ground, a sort of downtown Kabul with a bunch of flags. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Some facts. Stay at the Melia next door and the golf is free. If you need to hire clubs (I paid to take mine with me and was glad I did) it is about $34 a round. Of note, I played twice with a friend I made out there and who hired club and they were excellent. They were TaylorMade MP6’s and in excellent condition; none of your second-hand cast offs here. The website says you have to use a buggy although according to the staff, you don’t. They had a massive fire last year and lost $7Million of equipment and buggies and there is therefore not as many as they once had although the ones they do have are fantastic. So, if you want to walk and carry, fill your boots, you can. But caution. I usually carry my bag at home and so gave it a try on my first round here. It was a mistake. Coming off the 10th green I missed the sign for the 11th Tee, saw a Tee-box nearby and carried on. It was only much later that I realised I had missed 11 to 14 altogether and had jumped from 10 to 15! For the record, behind the 10th there is a tunnel running under the road and the 11th is through there. Do not turn right or you will miss a quarter of the course. As it turns out that was no bad thing. This course is far too long and it is far too hot to carry and walk and I limped off like a soggy, sweaty wreck of a man. So, pay the $44 a head and use a buggy!
One down-side. I totally understand the economic position of Cuba and the fact that they can’t afford to miss any fund-raising possibility; I get it and generally, I don’t mind. But I have to be honest and say that charging $44 per head for the buggy is a bit steep. I played ten times in two weeks, nine of which were in a buggy. On two occasions I played with a friend and we naturally shared the buggy, but got charged $44 each. So, when I played solo, it cost $44 but when I played as a pair, the same buggy cost $88. That’s not on and I would urge the course to think about that one as it can’t help development of the game or take-up of the course itself.
As for the course, if you are expecting Augusta National, think again. The climate, grass-type and available resources mean that the fairways are more baby cabbage than rye grass and everyone played ‘preferred lies’, the greens are a bit patchy although very playable and the tees are a bit of a lottery. But please, do not, for one minute let those comments put you off. The course is a monster. It’s over 7,000 yards long even off the white tees; I played off the blues twice and they were enough to reduce me to tears; for context I play off 15 and still, despite my advancing years, hit a drive about 235 on average – real yards not 19th hole “I smash my driver 300 yards into wind” type of ‘bull crap’-yards. The course is also extremely interesting with a mix of extremely long Par-5’s, challenging Par-3’s and a sea of bunkers the like of which I have only ever seen before when I played in Dubai. The view from the 18th green back across to Varadero is simply stunning. The 16th hole has to be seen to be believed. You tee-off over water onto an island which extends out to about 220 yards. From there, you play over more water onto another island which goes out to about 440, over water again onto a third and the green is hidden behind a combination of water and a massive bunker. Good luck and bring spare balls. Ten attempts on this Par-5 and the best I managed was a 6 with an average of well over 7. I thought I had brought enough balls and still ended up buying more from the greenkeeping staff – 12 for $10 is the going rate if you speak to them nicely.
It's a laugh and a lot of fun and in good enough condition to keep anyone entertained. No matter what your standard, you will enjoy this. The variety is amazing and if you get bored, the number of chickens, lizards and guinea fowl running around will ensure you keep entertained. As stated, I played ten times in 14 days and would gladly have played more, I never got even close to being bored.
As for the staff, typically Cuban, by which I mean, amazing, friendly and incredibly welcoming. From the beautiful and ever-smiling Taimi who arranges your booking in the Melia hotel, to Guillermo and Ricardo, the Pro team, the wonderfully helpful and friendly Roberto, to the lovely lady behind the counter in the shop whose name I missed (I’m very sorry because she was lovely) and to all the incredible greenkeeping staff who work tirelessly to make the best of what they have with extremely limited resources, thank you. It was a blast and I will definitely be back next year. Only this time with more balls for that damned 16th!

DO NOT PRE-BOOK. Before I left the UK I booked to play and pre-paid a green fee. I injured my back and warned the club I may not be able to play. I wasn’t able to play and another guest at the hotel was going to take my place. On the day there was an issue getting an early taxi meaning the guest couldn’t make it. I let the club know on the day, as soon as I was aware, and was notified the refund would be processed also there was no need for me to come into the club to sort the refund. Now I’m back in the UK they have changed their mind and hung the cancellation policy over me , knowing I can’t do anything about it. To add insult to injury it’s off season and the club is very quiet. Me not being able to play didn’t prevent anyone from playing, the golf club is just being greedy and holding onto my money. Tourists need flexibility as things change when travelling away from home. I would not recommend pre paying. In addition I drove past the course a couple of times and it didn’t look value for money so money maybe better spent elsewhere.

Great people... just got back in may ... course especially the fairways are in terrible shape. I mean really bad ... more dirt and sand vs fairway grass, I hope they can fix it ... won't be going back anytime soon.
Only cause the golf course is in bad shape.

Not a bad course. Some interesting holes. Fairways a bit scruffy, especially the back 9.
Greens surprisingly ok, despite their appearance. Spongy but receptive. Ball stops quickly. Pace of the greens swifter than expected and reasonably true.
Some stunning scenery next to the ocean. The 16th is a challenge - 2 lots of water to clear to reach the green.
Overall a good experience. 👍

The field and the clubs were great. My issue is they double charged me for balls and waters sayings I pulled the card out too fast and I that it didn’t work, when in fact my billing account sais I was charged two times 50$ can. When I called they simply denied the situations.

Four of us went down for a week of golf early in November. I'm just a little late in writing my review. Heard about the problem with golf carts before we went but decided to try anyway and glad we did. Arrived and met Eduardo the course starter and he told us our best way to get one of the carts that they had was to plan on teeing off around 11 - 11:30 as there were large groups book early and that is when the carts would start to come back in. This worked well and we were finished 18 around 3 -3:30 pm. Made sure we took lots of water as this was the hottest and most humid part of the day but it didn't stop us from playing and enjoying the golf.
The course needs some work as do the greens but very playable.
The power carts that we had were 8 man, 6 man and maintenance which gave us something to laugh about at the time and talk about when we got home.
Would definitely come back to play golf.
Thanks Eduardo for everything you did to make our games enjoyable.

****Very Important Notice***

Please note that all the golf carts were destroyed in a fire just over a month ago. The golf course is doing everything they can to keep things running. They have borrowed/rented, trolleys, luggage, and maintenance carts from other resorts for golfers to rent (still $33usd per golfer). At this time, they have 68 cart seats, but you might be sitting on the back of a flatbed cart. Some people were aware of this and brought their pull carts as they are now allowing walkers. Most who have walked it said they would never do it again – too hot/humid and long.
As of the last week in November, there were several groups of 20-50 golfers from Canada. This has made it impossible to get on the course for some. You will now see large groups of 6 and 7 golfers playing all at once. The trolleys (10-seater) have a chauffeur and he drives cart path only.
The people at the course are doing everything they can. So please do not take your anger or frustration out on them………it is out of their control. They had asked me to inform people of the situation as they have no means to. If you have booked here, please contact the course to see if they have tee times. It may take months to secure golf carts, so please check a head.
The course is in good shape since they lost their maintenance equipment now and are doing everything manually.

Lovely course & very welcoming, helpful staff! We took the package of 6 rounds which we thought was excellent value for money, especially as club hire & buggy rental was included! A few tricky holes but it makes you plot your way around! Especially the 15th & 16th.
