About
Varadero Golf Club is the only 18 hole72 par golf course in Cuba. It has all the facilities, services and equipment associated with the practice of golf. It was opened in 1999. It was designed by architect Les Furber, President of the Canadian company Golf Design Services LTD (GDS), combining three (3) golfing architectures Classic design, Challenging or Target Golf design and Links design. It covers a narrow 3.5 Km strip located between "Los Cactus ", "Tuxpan", "Bella Costa", Melia "Las Americas", "Golf & Suites Resort", "Melia Varadero", "Sol Club Palmeras", and "Sol Club Sirenas" hotels. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE GOLF COURSE - 18 holes; 72 par: 5 par 5 holes and 5 par 3 holes; remaining 8 holes are par 4. - 6 269 linear meters of trajectory between the First Tee or starting point and Green 18. Three golfing architectures have been combined: 1. Classic design, broad roads bordered by trees, wide and scarcely protected greens. 2. Challenging or Target Golf design, modern style with narrow roads and heavily protected greens surrounded by sand traps and lakes. The Varadero Golf Course has several salt water lakes that connect directly with the sea, a feature that makes it almost unique worldwide. 3. Links design, with holes located alongside the sea following the shoreline, introducing the ocean as another obstacle in the game. It allows golf players to combine all the technical elements of the game with the beauty, peacefulness and quiet of the surroundings. Our Golf Club continues expanding its most ambitious golf facilities projects by opening the first golf academy operated by PGA professionals and instructors from the Cuban Golf Federation. Practice areas (300 meters for long games, 2 putting greens, 1 shipping green, 2 bunkers) are structured to allow instruction to be imparted indoors, including the use of accessories, golf clubs and practice balls. The Golf Academy has designed various programs following international sports guidelines, rules and ethics, open to all professionals and students who wish to enjoy this fascinating game amidst breathtaking beaches and our wonderful culture. The Club House of the Varadero Golf Club has a golf players´ reception at the Caddie House, also including a Pro Shop and Snack Bar. We have facilities and experience in organizing international golf tournaments. We have hosted two European Challenge Tour Grand Finals (1999 and 2000). Golfing area 39.7 Ha. Greens 1.5 Ha. Ante-Greens 2.0 Ha. Tees 2.0 Ha. Fairways 23.9 Ha. Rough 10.3 Ha. Indigenous woods 3.3 Ha. Lagoons 13.4 Ha. Internal roads: 3.7 Ha. Parks and other architectural features: 0.9 Ha. - Trail402730919242 contributionsVery nice golf experienceSeaside land with breathtaking views! Terrain has several challenges. Land is still in good condition despite the lack of convenience for maintenance. Very playable terrain despite everything. Super friendly and welcoming staff. We played 6 rounds of golf in 7 days and enjoyed all our rounds. We are definitely going back!Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten March 5, 2024
- cynthia L2 contributionsHoping for the bestWe thoroughly enjoyed our three rounds of golf here. I want to use this opportunity to express my strongly felt opinion regarding helping others namely the people who work in jobs in the resorts; etc. As someone who lived for several years when I was very young in South America and who saw the full gamut of the socioeconomic spectrum at a young age, I developed a very strong sense of justice and fairness. This hasn’t disappeared into adulthood. Whenever we travel we take a couple of hundred dollars extra in small bills to give to people as tips for good service etc. it’s so appreciated and we feel good helping them. A win win. I figure if we can afford to show up and stay there for a week then a couple hundred toward improving their quality of life goes a long way and is nothing. While we’re wincing about not having ketchup for our burgers these people are having to appeal to the UN for milk for their kids. I found this out when I returned home and that really upset me. I truly hope things improve for them soon.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 4, 2024

- 508pedersenCalgary, Canada29 contributionsOld guys golf tripGolfers review .six rounds played all in four hours or less. Third time over the years playing Varadero. The course has a few rough spots but nothing a few preferred lies couldn’t fix. Sand traps have new sand and have to be played with improved lies. (No rakes). Greens are a little shaggy and inconsistent in places but roll reasonably well. The layout is superb. The Proshop is efficient and the ladies are all pleasant. We left our clubs in storage and they were ready for play each morning. On course service people were great, the starter always had a smile and worked the morning cross over flawlessly. Special shoutout to Aberito in the back shop. Real nice man, that tried to teach me some survival Spanish. At less than a $100.00 a round it provides great winter golf value.Visited January 2025Travelled with friendsWritten January 18, 2025

****Very Important Notice***
Please note that all the golf carts were destroyed in a fire just over a month ago. The golf course is doing everything they can to keep things running. They have borrowed/rented, trolleys, luggage, and maintenance carts from other resorts for golfers to rent (still $33usd per golfer). At this time, they have 68 cart seats, but you might be sitting on the back of a flatbed cart. Some people were aware of this and brought their pull carts as they are now allowing walkers. Most who have walked it said they would never do it again – too hot/humid and long.
As of the last week in November, there were several groups of 20-50 golfers from Canada. This has made it impossible to get on the course for some. You will now see large groups of 6 and 7 golfers playing all at once. The trolleys (10-seater) have a chauffeur and he drives cart path only.
The people at the course are doing everything they can. So please do not take your anger or frustration out on them………it is out of their control. They had asked me to inform people of the situation as they have no means to. If you have booked here, please contact the course to see if they have tee times. It may take months to secure golf carts, so please check a head.
The course is in good shape since they lost their maintenance equipment now and are doing everything manually.

Four of us went down for a week of golf early in November. I'm just a little late in writing my review. Heard about the problem with golf carts before we went but decided to try anyway and glad we did. Arrived and met Eduardo the course starter and he told us our best way to get one of the carts that they had was to plan on teeing off around 11 - 11:30 as there were large groups book early and that is when the carts would start to come back in. This worked well and we were finished 18 around 3 -3:30 pm. Made sure we took lots of water as this was the hottest and most humid part of the day but it didn't stop us from playing and enjoying the golf.
The course needs some work as do the greens but very playable.
The power carts that we had were 8 man, 6 man and maintenance which gave us something to laugh about at the time and talk about when we got home.
Would definitely come back to play golf.
Thanks Eduardo for everything you did to make our games enjoyable.

Prior to our trip we were told, by veterans who visit and play Varadero, not to expect the same quality of greens as North American courses. Well they were right, the greens were kinda furry and very slow. You have to hit a firm putt. Apart from that, the scenery was fantastic especially 18 along the beach. We liked it enough to to play a 2nd time a few days later. Unknown to us, you can actually stay at the course in a vintage hotel with a lot of history. Our significant others (there were 3 couples) wanted the beach so we stayed at Paradisus Varadero, an 8 minute cab ride to the course for $20 with tip. The course accommodations also has beach access but we didn’t have time to check it out. We’ll be back.

We stayed at the Melia Las Americas from Nov 21 - 28 (great hotel) (walking distance to course). Played 10 rounds in the 7 days we were there, replays were free after 3 pm. Course was OK, greens are really slow and rough, we switched from blues to whites during the week, just to change it up. On windy days stay with the whites!! Staff was friendly and really helpful. Don't waste your money booking tee times, I paid $61 Canadian to book early tee times, we we got to the course in the mornings, there was a line up on the #1 tee, we never got off at our scheduled/pre paid tee time, it was first come first serve. There were a couple of days where we were offered to go off #10 because the #1 tee was way backed up (10 groups waiting). Also, play in the Friday tournament, Rey puts on a great event, the lunch is well worth the $30.

DO NOT PRE-BOOK. Before I left the UK I booked to play and pre-paid a green fee. I injured my back and warned the club I may not be able to play. I wasn’t able to play and another guest at the hotel was going to take my place. On the day there was an issue getting an early taxi meaning the guest couldn’t make it. I let the club know on the day, as soon as I was aware, and was notified the refund would be processed also there was no need for me to come into the club to sort the refund. Now I’m back in the UK they have changed their mind and hung the cancellation policy over me , knowing I can’t do anything about it. To add insult to injury it’s off season and the club is very quiet. Me not being able to play didn’t prevent anyone from playing, the golf club is just being greedy and holding onto my money. Tourists need flexibility as things change when travelling away from home. I would not recommend pre paying. In addition I drove past the course a couple of times and it didn’t look value for money so money maybe better spent elsewhere.

We’ve just returned from a week of golf at Varadero Golf Club and a stay at our favourite hotel Melia Las Americas. As in the past we were treated like royalty and we enjoyed the food, hotel room, staff, beach, special events, special suppers, beach events and of course Golf. We were a bit apprehensive in visiting Cuba during this time because of Covid , but we never ever felt at risk, due to the fact that all guests undergo a rapid Covid test upon arrival, staff adhered to strict Covid protocols (even wearing masks outside, social distancing, etc). Truth be told the Cuban people need us more than ever, as the lockdown has been especially tough on them. I would suggest bringing small gifts such as pain medication, cell phones, clothing and of course tips 💵 for the super service. With the annual golf tournament just weeks away, we were so pleased to see the course in super condition, as you’ll see in the pics. Please feel free to ask any questions and I’ll do my best to answer. One thing for sure, we’ve all been through tough times lately, and a vacation to Melia Las Americas and Varadero Golf Club was what we needed.

Without knowing, my husband and I started our one week GOLF vacation at Melia Las Americas on the first day it re-opened, October 2nd 2021 after being closed because of Covid-19.
Sales director, Reynaldo Leon, went out of his way to make sure we were happy with the room and golf.
Cubans take the Covid-19 measures very seriously and wear their mask all the time, everywhere, even outside. All the staff is fully vaccinated and the procedures for Canadians to take a test before returning to Canada are very simple.
If you don’t already know, Cuba has changed currency in the past year or so. The CUC is no longer used and is replaced by the Cuban pesos. But there is no need to change your money for that peso. Price for cart is in US $ like before but they don’t take US cash. you MUST pay by credit card.
We had amazing weather to enjoy five games of golf on the beautiful Varadero Golf. The course is in pristine condition as they are hosting a tournament on October 17. It is just waiting for more players!
DO NOT HESITATE! Cuba is safe for tourists and our friends at Varadero Golf Club are waiting for you!

Great golf!
Will not go back in January again. It was packed must days.
I liked that I prebooked our tee times. Loved that our clubs were on a golf cart every morning waiting for us. After we finished each day, they would ask what time tomorrow. Until the last day.
We got there around 6:45am. Looked for our clubs. No where to be found. Asked the guys. Told look again twice. Asked if we paid yet. I told him that he was paying at that moment and I always put on my socks and shoes. Told me to calm down. We went into the storage room. Not there. I was getting really upset because I could not find our clubs. Followed the other guy to another storage room. Finally found them.
Got to the first hole. Three groups in front of us. There shouldn't of been that many groups in front of us because we had the third tee off time and the first tee off group was behind us because the golf course forgot to pick them up for their time. Had to call a taxi.
I was to pissed off with how we were treated to really play. Treated amazing all the other days till our last day.
The best part of golfing was when my other half got his first hole in one! We all got down to the hole at the twelfth hole. Couldn't find it anywhere. The gardener was there and said look in the hole. We were all shocked!
Golfing was better in November. It isn't as busy as in January.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this little treasure- nice long course, first nine les challenging. Overall very impressed with the layout and set up. Little refinements such as ice box on the buggy could go a long way in the heat. This was winter season so it us a must in the hot summer months.
Professional and the pro shop are very helpful. I played 9 rounds in two weeks, some were solo, but most I teamed up with other tourists.

Going to be at Melia Las Americas in April 2025 and wondering when is a relatively down time to play? Not eager to be "pushed" on a busy course while on vacation. I would assume that peak playing time would be early morning to beat the heat and perhaps early evening, and that afternoons are quieter?
Written September 25, 2024
Hi Genie.
Were you able to pay the $44USD cart fee on credit card? Thanks !
Written April 24, 2024
Hi.
Curious - Were you able to pay the cart fee on a credit card, or it had to be paid in cash? Is it $33USD?
Written April 24, 2024
I see on the course website the cart fees say they are required per golfer per day. Does this mean the cart fee is only paid once per day? (i.e. if you play two rounds in a day do you only need to pay the cart fee for the first round or for both?)
Written October 30, 2023
My understanding is it's once per round but I can't be sure on that. Best contact the course durect

Interested to kn ow the current status of any hotels in Varadero still offering free greens fees so golfers only pay local cart fees

Yes, please. I'm staying at Sol Palmeras, do you know if they offer a golf package?

Habituellement ç revient à 44 $ canadien mais en ce moment il n’y a pas de kart, le hangar à passé au feu.

I am considering an upgrade at Melia Varadero that comes with 3 golf days and was wondering if the club let you golf in twosomes as it will be me and my daughter and we are not good golfers by any stretch of the imagination and since its a vacation, I dont want the added stress of golfing with strangers who are more serious. I mean I can shoot high in record time so I wont hold anyone up but....LOL

The Tee Times will be always for four players each teen minutes. We are not able to confirm you´ll play as a single Twosome
The course is open to all amateurs golf players , please don´t worry you´ll enjoy the game.
