I was so excited to see the old mansions. They were very interesting, Do not go unless you are on a tour. Certainly, not two women walking alone. I was with my daughter at 3:30 in the afternoon and we felt like we could be trafficked. There were homeless people under the bridge and sketchy cars awaiting. Had I been on a tour, I would have felt safe and would have learned the history. In addition, it was brutally hot at 3:30 - we needed water and a personal fan.

A guided tour around the Scharloo area provides you more insight of how Curacao helped its population to be proud of their neighbourhood again. Beautiful city reconstruction and most friendly people. A guided tour is recommended!

This is my favorite part of Willemstad. I've very much enjoyed a walk here within the calm streets and street art bursting unexpectedly. No surprise it is home to many beautiful colonial mansions, home to several embassies.
Don't miss the 3O'Clock Romance mural (romance tale between two birds on a branch of kibrahacha tree), Beyond The Obvious, and lot more..
We've also discovered the cutest cafe ever there called Beyglz.

The Scharloo area is a pretty rough neighbourhood to go through, so I wouldn't recommend going there by foot as a tourist. Driving through there everyone notices you, so I would recommend going there with a few or even a group. Especially if you want to go and explore some of the beautiful buildings that are now abandoned/empty. I definitely recommend going for a drive through this neighbourhood (with your car safely locked) to have a look at the old buildings and the less safe areas around the city centre.

As soon as I saw it from a tour bus real quick, I thought I must go back to explore this small four or so street area by Punda, Curacao.So I walked across a small bridge near the fruit market,(floating market) and wow, small homes in all pastels, with wrought iron doors,and louvered windows! Bachata music greeted me from one of two bars,and a lazy cat, on a bench couldn't care less that I was there. So quaint and typical Caribbean ,and coulourful. Do not miss it, right near the floating market.Yeah. Pronounced "Skarlo"

I didn't even make it into the neighbourhood far enough and was saved, by a local man, from being robbed in broad daylight. I am a female and was alone, so I would just say to go with a partner just for precaution or on a tour.

We followed the walking tour for the pretty buildings in the tourism book and only got as far as #8 out of 25+. We came across a dirt street with a bunch of locals sitting outside the buildings and decide to not go any further. This was too bad, as the buildings we did see were quite amazing and would have done the full route if we could have.

The renovated homes in Scharloo are worth seeing, but you might want to take a tour in a van rather than on foot. The beautifully restored homes (mostly offices that you can only see from the outside now) are often next to empty or very run down homes...wealth literally next door to extreme poverty.

This is part of Willemstad and definitely worth a visit. Please hire a guide, since most of the buildings are privately owned so there is no way to find out about their history on your own. It's a paradise for photographers, so bring on your camera. Also, bring something for drink, since there are no bars or restaurants (only one inside a hotel, which is open only for breakfast and dinner - terrible food by the way). Hiring a walking tour is fine, but please be prepared for the heat.
