While planning our trip, we thought maybe we would pass on Scotts Head. I am so glad we didn't. Excellent views at the top of the hill that you can drive up. We snorkeled all long the marine and saw amazing reef wildlife. Totally worth it. Great food nearby in the villages along the reserve. A must see. Bring your snorkel gear and water shoes!

Once you get to the end of the road, before the rocks, park anywhere on the side. You can drive (4WD) or walk up the peninsula to see the cannon and get some good pics of the view. If you want to go snorkel, then walk along the beach on the cove side until is dead ends and you will see a nice sandy area to get in at. Beware of the current! We were there on a very windy day and we were worried that the current and waves may pull us out to sea if we went around the peninsula and we were the only ones there. Use your best judgement!

This was our favorite snorkel place on the entire island. The rumors are true, this place is awesome. We saw eels, puffers, lobsters, sting rays and tons of Caribbean fish like parrots, Sargent majors and more. Great life here as well as good Coral along the wall. Look closely and under rocks!

We came here on a Sunday and the last building on the left with the restrooms and shower, where you pay the SSMR fee was not open. Once they arrived, they told us the best areas to snorkel and to pay on our way out. Another quick note here is that I am not sure if they rent gear (sorry we had our own, so I didn't check). In addition, you have to pay $1 US to use the restroom and $2 US for the shower.

On your way there, after Soufriere the concrete road will end and it will look like you are entering an alley. Just go on through as this is the right way and you are entering the town. Also beware the dips in the road located on the concrete road between Soufriere and Scott's head. After your visit to Scott's head, stop by Bubble Beach in Soufriere.

Prior to our trip we bought 3 things that made our snorkel experience great!

Tribord (Subea) Easybreath Full Face Snorkeling Mask - Does not fog as long as you have a tight (not too tight) seal and so easy to just breathe instead of deal with leaking seals. I didn’t swallow seawater once on our trip. I love this mask and I will never go back to a traditional mask again. The only downside I have found is that you cannot free dive with it.

We also used a Tillak Kiwanda Dry Bag and took our valuables in the water with us. As an added precaution, I also put our phones, keys, money and credit cards in an additional Pelican box inside the dry bag. Be sure to roll the bag at least 3 times to ensure a good seal. I also kept some air in the bag so that it would float on top the water. Nothing ever got wet and we never had to worry about our stuff getting stolen. NOTE: You cannot submerge the bag otherwise it will get wet inside, the front little zipper pocket is not waterproof, I would get a light color as black absorbs heat making the bag hot inside which is bad for electronics also if you get yellow it acts as a flag so boaters can see you easier.

We also brought a cheap $10 sports equipment net for carrying our snorkel gear in. It doubled as a sandal bag we could take in the water with us so we didn't have to worry about someone stealing our sandals (it has happened before).

If you are in Dominica a week, drive out to Scott's head. There is a short hike up to a canon emplacement that gives great views back to Dominica. The snorkeling is OK, but not the best in the Caribbean. You can park on the narrow stretch of the isthmus, where you will certainly be approached with many offers of tours, fruit, etc.

We have loved our two week vacation on Dominica! The people are so nice, the attractions amazing. I don't want to be negative, just want to warn travellers. We went down to Scot's Head to spend the afternoon. Beautiful and a fair way from where we were staying. As soon as we arrived, a young man calling himself Philip, came right up to us insisting to guide us up the trail. I resisted, because he was lying right away, saying he was on the phone with our cruise ship and was expecting us (we weren't on a cruise). I should have been firm and said no, but we followed him up the trail. Rush, rush, up and back, not the relaxing hike we wanted. Returned to the car and he said he wanted 160.00 EC. I asked for a price before we left and he would not answer. When I protested, he dropped to 60.00 EC and I ended up paying 40.00 EC. The amount was less important than the harassment and speed of the hike and we didn't get to check out the coral reef because we just wanted to get away. This warning is not to scare you off, again the people are lovely by a vast majority. Just remember to be very firm if you are being harassed. Walk away, tell someone nearby you are not happy. The people are helpful and want you to enjoy your holiday. Don't let a guy like Phillip spoil a wonderful experience. Our second trip to Dominica and we will return ASAP. You ruined our day Philip, but we still love your country.

The water at Scottshead is crystal clear, which is ideal for snorkeling. There is a large variety of fish and coral to observe. Great place to go !

I have almost no experience snorkeling, but Champagne Reef was a blast, I greatly enjoyed it! I saw plenty of fish and coral, etc. The $2.00 (US) fee goes to the Reserve.

HIghly recommend climbing to the top of Scotts Head. The view you get there is Outstanding. You have the privilege of viewing both the Atlantic and Caribbean and it doesnt get much prettier that that!

The SSMR is a pretty awesome space for snorkeling and I've been told by fellow passengers on Nature Island Dive, it is excellent for diving. My kid and I snorkeled around the area as much as possible and had a great time - except for when I got eaten by "sea ants" (really tiny jellyfish). Gahhhh!!! But, it was fun!

Reef was dead and very few fish. Not worth the trip if you are visiting Dominica. Went on a shore excursion from the QM2 and requested a refund.
