The first European town in the Americas was set here in SD, by the Ozama river where the first (same name) fortress was built. The fortress was enlarged shortly so several gates to the fortified city were built.
Puerta del Conde is the western gate oriented inland, and was built at the beginning/end of the first commercial street Calle el Conde.
Today it's a historic landmark and the gateway to the Independence park behind it.

This historic gate is located at the eastern entrance of Independence Park on Calle Palo Hincado. On the upper left section of the gate, is a brick arch with a bell. A Dominican flag flies proudly from the top of the gate. To the left of the gate is a bust of Francisco del Rosario Sánchez on a brick base. Two canons guard the entry to the gate. To the right of the gate is a concrete guardhouse with a dome shaped roof. Soldiers are posted in the gate house, which also serves as the entrance to Independence Park. In this area, there is a plaque on the ground which states,"under this arch of the counts door were placed the remains of Duarte Sanchez Mella, from March 27, 1943, until July 15, 1976".
The remains of this famous trio were moved to the nearby Altar de la Patria, a short walk west past the alley of heroes in the Park. The trio were the leaders of "La Trinateria" which fought for Dominican independence from Haiti. The bust of Sanchez outside the gate, has a plaque which states the years of his life i.e. 1817-1861. The plaque also states,"In Gate of the Count,on February 27, 1844, Sanchez raised the first flag of the nascent Dominican Republic,as a symbol of our National Independence". Sanchez took over the leadership of the rebels after Duarte was exiled to Venezuela in 1843, and many members of the group were arrested. It was Sanchez who led the rebels gathered at the nearby, Puerta de la Misericordia, into battle against the Hatian forces which occupied Fortress Ozama. This is why the gate is also known as the "February 27 Gate".
La Puerta del Conde was the western entrance into the old town. Construction of this gate and fort, began in 1543 and it was originally named Fort San Genaro. The defensive walls were further strengthened in 1655, and renamed El Baluarte del Conde (The Count's Bulwark) . El Conde de Peñalve, was a key figure in defending the city, during the Siege of Santo Domingo by the British (April 23–30,1655 ). Other nearby attractions include, the statue of Caamano opposite the gate on Calle el Conde, Fuerte de la Concepción, a short stroll north, and to the west of Independence Park, the 1965 Civil war monument and National cemetery can be viewed.

If you are around the colonial city of Santo Domingo this is one of the top place to see; this gate was part of a large fortress system back in the time of colonization, but this place also have a greater meaning for the Dominican Republic since this was the place where all the independence process of the actual Dominican Republic began.

Tuesday 16th April and we walked to the top of Calle el Conde where this historic gate is situated. It was the main entrance to the ancient walled city.
A major historic event took place here on the 27th February 1844 as the Country's independence was proclaimed by Francisco del Rosario Sánchez. He also raised the Dominican Republic's Flag. Sánchez was one of the 3 (Los Trinitarios) the Republic’s founding Fathers.
Walk through the gate and discover Parque Independencia where the Altar de la Patria is located. This is a marble mausoleumin where the remains, of the Founders of the Dominican Republic, rest. Los Trinitarios were Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Ramón MatÃas Mella.
Due to its historical significance Puerta del Conde was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.

Entering La Puerta del Conde one feels some elegance and history of Santo Domingo . Sharply attired and neat and clean palace guards are impressive to watch as they patrol the park ceremonially . Lovely and bright Dominican flags pervade and are beautiful as they wave in the pleasant breezes . There is lovely reflecting pool and in a few steps down you see parts of the city wall erected over 400 years ago . Comfortable benches are there for visitors to sit , relax and in a leisurely way just enjoy people-watching . It's a lovely little oasis in the midst of a bustling city .

Just inside this unassuming gate is a beautiful little park right in the heart of the city. It is a fantastic place to escape the heat of the day, sitting on a bench in the shade and watching the world pass by. There are also busts of many of the influential people who crafted the history of this very interesting corner of the world. It is definitely worth the effort to spend a half hour or more taking in this little oasis.

Very busy place with poor view but picturesque. Tray to go early during the day because during the night it turn dangerous.

We walked towards the monument where different famous people are buried. Nice morning. My husband and son saw this monument for their first time. Very educational visit

This is the most important gate of the original gates is Puerta El Conde (Count’s Gate). This gate was named after Bernardo de Meneses y Bracamonte, the Count of Peñalva and the Captain General of Santo Domingo from 1653 – 1656. The Count is credite d with saving the city from 13,000 British invaders led by Admiral William Penn (founder of Pennsylvaniain the United States) and General Robert Venables.
Puerta El Conde was originally a part of Fort San Genaro which defended the city from sneak attacks by land from the west.
Puerta El Conde became a Dominican national symbol of freedom on February 27, 1844 when Dominican heroes reclaimed their independence from the Haitian government after 22 years of occupation.
On that date, Francisco del Rosario Sanchez raise the Dominican national flag for the first time. The gate was officially renamed Puerta de 27 Febrero but is called Puerta El Conde by locals.
Today Puerta El Conde is the archway leading into Independence Park (Park Independencia), a peaceful oasis amid the busy streets.
