First place we visited and the park is very peaceful with some beautiful trees and shrubs, lots of statues and places to sit in the shade. Old walls and structure of historical interest. Only information in Spanish.

The Independence Park is a must visit in Santo Domingo. It is easily reached by bus, as many routes start at the park. After walking through the Puerta del Conde (Gate of the Count) you will see the Alley of Heroes. This section was completed on 27 Feb 2017, to celebrate the 173rd anniversary of independence from Hatian rule. A plaque on the right, makes reference to the heroism of General Luperon during the war of restoration in 1865. In the middle of this area is a star shaped monument, which has the cardinal points indicated. This is the zero kilometer marker of Santo Domingo, and all street measurements are taken from this site.
If you continue walking west through the park, the Altar of the Fatherland, will be seen. This building was constructed in 1976, and the remains of the three leaders of "La Trinitera" are interred here. Statues of each person, sculpted by Nicholas Arrighini, from left to right are, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, Juan Pablo Duarte and Matías Ramón Mella. In a chamber below, the names of the three men are in gold letters on a marble tomb, on which an eternal flame burns.Their remains were previously held under the Puerta del Conde, where the declaration of independence was announced on 27 February 1844. Before this period, their remains were at the Chapel of the Immortals of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo.
If you continue walking to the southern area of the park, there are two more monuments to be viewed. The first is Manuela Díez Jiménez, the mother of Juan Pablo Duarte. She is remembered as a patriot, as she sold her property to buy weapons for the independence movement. Her house was also used for secret meetings of the Trinity, and she suffered abuse from the Hatians for her support of the rebels. She died in 1858 in Venezuela.
To the left, is a bust of Pedro Alejandro Pina, who lived between 1820-1870. He was one of the nine members who formed "La Trinitera" on 16 July 1838. When the group began public protests against Hatian rule in 1843, he was exiled to Curacao with Duarte and Pérez. He returned with Duarte in 1844 when Independence was achieved, but both were again sent to exile in Venezuela the following year, when Santana took power. He returned to the DR again to fight the French attempted takeover, the restoration war against the Spanish and the attempted annexation by the USA. He was an influential politician until his death.
After visiting the park, nearby attractions include the 1965 civil war monument and cemetery, a short walk west of the park and Fuerte de la Concepción, a short walk north.

Our visit was under 20 minutes as we had multiple places we were trying to visit that day.
In all the park is well put together and it tells a great story. In all if you are planning to visit Santo Domingo this is a must stop place (especially for pictures).
It's also close to the main attractions areas too.

You have to see this when you are there, do not litter or sit on the steps outside, there are always a soldier or two around gaurding this place and they will approach you if you do something which are against the rules. The tombs of several important guys are laying at rest here. This is a must see

A quiet and clean place, ideal for spending some time with sitting on a bench under the trees. The park itself is very well maintained. A row of statues depicting important persons of Dominican history and the tombs of the "three fathers of the country" (Los Trinitarios) in a white marble mausoleum (called Altar de la Patria) are the main highlights here (besides the beauty of the plants). ((Be careful of self-appointed "guides" or you'll end up asked for tips.))

This is a really good location for history seekers. Get a tour guide for inside information. I learned some very interesting information about these there gentleman that made me upset. According to my tour guide these there were not white as depicted in the statues, they were descendents of the Taino Indians.

This is a jewel when it comes to Dominican history. The architecture is nice and the edifice is welcoming when you discount the few individuals that offer to help you take your picture to turn around and ask you for tips.
