Altos de Chavon, is an architectural wonder, a 16th century replica of a Mediterranean village perched high above the Chavón River. The village was designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro, and created by Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa. Dominican artisans handcrafted the stone pathways, decorative ironwork, furniture and enchanting buildings, reviving almost forgotten crafts of metal work and stone carving. Under Coppa's direction, each stone was hand cut, each wooden door frame was handcrafted and each wrought-iron detail hand-forged. Construction of the village began in 1976 and the village was inaugurated in 1982 with the concert of Frank Sinatra at the amphitheater. Altos de Chavon was built as a center of culture for the Dominican people. Dominican residents, tourists and working artists, flock to this magically inspirational locale.

A new (70's) old city

A remarkable place built out of stones in the 70's. Sinatra inaugurated the amphitheater. A good bar and a pizza place. Amazing views.

Altos de Chavón is a replica of a Mediterranean Fishing Village located above the Chavón River in La Romana, Dominican Republic. It is a beautiful display of old rustic construction with a lot of charm and elegance. This is a wonderful place to take pictures with fountains, Churches, Amphitheaters, restaurants and more. People such as Frank Sinatra performed here. Michael... More

Stopped here last week while in port on a cruise. Some very pretty scenery here, but not much else. Can be in and out of this place in about 35 minutes.

Best thing to do is have a guide to tell you all about the history and the significance of different places on the ground. It overlooks the rio chavon and all the buildings and the cathedral are beautiful. Every detail is very old. The amphitheater has many famous performances and once you see it you will understand why. I think... More

Imagine exchanging vows in a 17th century Italian town overlooking verdant green tropical landscape and a beautiful, winding river. That's Altos de Chavon. The venue is stunning, and in our case, the bride and bridegroom were as beautiful as the surroundings. What a perfect place to marry!

We loved this lovely little village right next to the resort. The gorgeous architecture reminded us of Spain.

I visited La Romana during a cruise this past week. I was torn as to whether I should visit Altos de Chavon and had read many reviews; both positive and negative. I would have to say that I was pleasantly surprised and would highly recommend the village as a quick day trip. I enlisted a few other people standing at... More

The tour was a fast walk through with time allowed for pix. Didn't go inside any of the buildings except for a small shop where they were selling chocolate. The view was nice. That's about it.

visited Altos De Chavon during our stay in Punta Cana. First of all, it is an hour drive and a very expensive taxi fare from Punta Cana but when you get there, all that doesn't matter! This is a charming spot on a winding river that is well worth the trip. Stone buildings, fountains, an ampitheatre, restaurants and shops can... More
