We used the knutsford express intercity bus to travel from Negril to Kingston. A rep from trenchtown tours met us at Kingston bus station and it was a Dr. Livingston moment.

We were brought for lunch to a jerk bbq city centre establishment which was delicious, and then on to the government yard in trenchtown where Bob and Rita Marley had lived. The tour was very interesting and we were then treated to a live performance by "livinkulture".

Afterwards we got a taxi to "the reggae hostel" where we had a private ensuite double. The next morning we got the bus to hope road where Bob and Rita lived when he became successful, and after a tour we got a taxi to the bus station and went back to Negril.

Interesting place but quite small and it seems normal for your guide to be slightly stoned or drunk. We had a driver who went in and spoke to the guide first. It is $20 pp so can seem expensive for a 10 minute tour.
Everyone pleasant though and they have a real pride in the centre.
Trenchtown itself run down but some positive moves to develop.
The bob marley museum on hope street has much more to offer.

You don't want to just stroll around here, but get a taxi or friend to take you into the urban sprawl that isn't just Trench Town, but a cluster of poor neighbourhoods that are hard to tell apart -- though that didn't keep denizens of each from engaging in all-out war some years ago; you can still see the pock marks left by bullets. I was struck by both the desperate poverty poverty and the people's spirit. Want to know why Bob was pissed? Have a look around, especially if you're staying in New Kingston with the villas and wealth and see the face of Kingston most visitors miss. Compare the level of services -- rare trash pick-ups, women wheeling makeshift water carriers to public wells, occasional electricity.

This is a very dangerous area of Kingston. Be cautious because this is not an area to visit with your family or friends.

Trench Town, way back in the seventies it was a nice place to visit, thats where alot of famous jamaican singers came from including Bob Marley, but now it has sporadic bouts of violence which overshadows any nostalgic buildings around the community that one could stop and talk to the elders about. The main person who is responsible for the community is Music Producer and owner of Shocking Vibes Recording Studio - Patrick Roberts. Patrick Roberts was the manager for International Recording Artist Beenie Man until they had a fall out over a girl that Moses "Beenie Man" Davis married. Patrick Roberts is well known for his standing up for gay rights in Jamaica and had been in a relationship with Moses Davis. Patrick Roberts is a great man. He does not live in Trench Town but he controls some parts of it as a representative for the Peoples National Party P.N.P. which recently lost to the J.L.P. The buildings around the community have been destroyed and it is full of criminal elements but is heavily patrolled by Police Officers so it is not a place I would recommend for you to visit, to confirm this ask your travel agency to find out if it is safe for you to visit Trench Town.

Trench town is what we call the gheto in jamaica this place is a part of bob marleys heritage you will see nice apartments and also ones that are not nice the people are friendly and helpful and always ready to tell visitors about bob marley. but dont be fooled there are some people who are not so friendly and you might be very sory if you are a visitor from another country and you go there alone. please ask help from the jamaica tourist board or the police if you have to go thank you.

Trench town has come a long way since the 1970's. Today it boasts the Trench Town Culture Yard Museum which in 2006 was designated a National Heritage Site after 4 years of renovation and restoration. The museum is located in one of the 1940's Government Yards which was the home of Vincent 'Tata' Ford who taught a young Bob Marley to play the guitar. Tata is also the author of 'No Woman No Cry' which was written in that yard and about that yard. The museum galleries are still a work in progress but is presentable and tells a fantastic story . The tour guides, especially Sophia, are professional and friendly. I did the Culture Yard tour but also the walking tour of the community which is a must do. The people are very friendly and protective of visitors. It is a must see if going to Kingston.

We hired a local tourguide for a day trip to Ocho Rios & incorporated this on our way home. She introduced us to a local guide who walked us through the area - 'Blackie' . He was very informative although my wife found him a little difficult to understand.
It is a bit of a shock to a middle class Westerner to see how tough life can be here. We felt safe here, & despite my feelings of guilt & voyeurism - this tour is a small way that these people can get a bit more money into the community.
