Not for the faint of heart and scary travelers.
This is in the heart of downtown and where the people of montego bay shop, dine, catch cabs, you know live.
Its bustling and fun if you go with an open mind.

Do it! It's entertaining! Have your wits about you. Watch your stuff and don't engage with the so called 'guides' - everyone is a 'tourist guide' there! They're there hanging out trying to rip you off. If you need a taxi, it's best to ask a policeman/woman for assistance. They will stop it for you. Use a car with a red plate. The fare is supposed to be 100 Jamaican dollars per person to a neighbouring town.

We recently spent the day in MoBay while on vacation in Negril. It was nice to leave the all-inclusive resort and see the real Jamaica. This was our fourth trip to Jamaica but until now we had only passed thru MoBay on our way to our hotel or enroute to Ocho Rios on a previous trip. MoBay was very alive with cars and people filling the streets. We parked the car in the heart of MoBay for $1 an hour and took off on foot. We ended up at Sam Sharpe Square. I had heard of Sam Sharpe but never understood his importance to Jamaica and the world. The square has a few small buildings and statues honouring Sam Sharpe. There really isn't a lot to see and more should be done to draw visitors to the square. Being from North America we usually get the American slave story and have not learned of Sam Sharpe's importance in ending slavery.
A must see for history buffs.

Great and important history of the area made this very interesting. Unfortunately we definitely didn’t feel safe. We were approached multiple times for handouts or random solicitations. Even our tour driver said he would stay close. It’s unfortunate because it is an significant part of the island’s history.

Don't ever go there. Small crowded dirty boring lame. We were haggled there by our bus driver in Falmouth. Costed $90 round trip. Huge waste of time and money

Have visited Sam Sharpe Square once before, and it doesn't cease to resonate with me. When standing in the square, you are standing where Jamaican's and Africans stood and sat to be reminded that they are worth more than they were being treated during Slavery. Sam Sharp used the Bible to empower people...the opposite to how it was being used by Plantation owners and Governors of Jamaica at the time.
Its in the middle of bustling Montego Bay, and very easy to find.

I am sure there are many beautiful & welcoming places in Jamaica but the town of Montego Bay is not one of them. Our visit was a cruise stop off so it can hardly be a full picture of the place however enough time to debunk a few myths. Our carriers' advice was to get a minibus taxi @ $USD7 each to the town. We did but it took us and 10 others to Margaritaville Beach way past the town. The taxi driver ,God Bless him, was quite prepared to take us back to the town for another $7! You could actually go on to the beach for another $7 if that's what your plan is and the reviews of it are good. We decided to walk back along the "HIP Strip" passing a good number of Tourist shops selling Bob Marley T-shirts and not much else. Although we were asked by every shop worker to come inside we were not pressured and did not feel uncomfortable. If that's what you want go for it but it is not very authentic and not very Hip. The walk back took about 20 minutes, we stopped twice to get directions from the very smart, white shirted and jolly Tourist Police. So if you get lost or confused find one of them, they are everywhere and they will gladly help you. Even the ordinary blue shirted police in the town said hello to us. We specifically wanted to go to Sam Sharpe Square, perhaps we thought we should at least hang our heads in shame for a few moments? What a dump! If the Jamaicans thought more of it they would clean it up and get rid of the beggars and Tour Guide Conmen hanging around (we spoke to a couple that had been targeted and hounded until they coughed up some money to get rid of a Guide who pinted out some shops). The town is colourful by nature of the the number of cheap clothes shops and ad hoc vegetable stalls but it essentially a working town, busy with traffic and low grade trade, but dirty also with crumbling curbs, blocked drains and holes in the pavement. You don't get the sense that the Govt. is circulating any of the money that tourism brings in back into the streets of Montego Bay. If you are offended by the smell of cannabis smoking don't go, it hangs everywhere - well it is Jamaica. We flagged a Taxi down driven by a young lad, he said it would be $USD5 all in to go back to the ship, great, but then he stopped and convinced to German Women to get in as well for another $5! They did, what a hoot, he sang all the way back to the ship, best part of the day even though the seat belts didn't work and I got the impression that he had stole the car - for no other reason than he didn't appear to know where the brakes where or how to change gear properly, although he did laughingly say to us "This happens all the time in Jamaica!". My advice is forget the town and the beach ( it would have cost us $21 each for a few hours on a beach) pay a little extra and go on a guided tour and see the nicer parts of the island, it might be a sanitised view but you may still be able to sing the song in the future.

Dedicated to the Jamiaca hero Sam Sharpe located in the town center which is next to the civil center. Good tour by our driver Allan who kept us informed, safe and used his knowledge to show us local hidden spots.

Hi...
My husband and I are planning to visit Puerto Vallarta Hard Rock the beginning of August, we are celebrating our 1yr anniversary and honeymoon (honey-versary). We would like to know does the Hard Rock do complimentary vow renewal? If so, how many days do you need to stay?
