About
This historic area in San Juan exudes old-world charm. Walk along the cobbled streets and past colorful buildings, historic fortresses, and old city walls, some of which date back to the 16th century. You might even chance upon local musicians playing some salsa or jazz tunes. There are also several museums where you can learn more about the history, art, and culture of the area, plus cool cocktail bars and restaurants for a quintessentially Puerto Rican meal. Don't miss all the best sights (and food!) on a walking tour of Old San Juan. – Tripadvisor

This city is a jewel of the Caribbean with it's beautiful buildings, rich history and wonderful food. At no point day or night did we feel unsafe and the energy of the city is constant. I really enjoy this wonderful place!Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten January 26, 2024

- Phil GWashington DC, District of Columbia311 contributionsBeautiful colorful walkMust visit if you’re in San Juan. I recommend going in the morning around 8 or 9am and spending a few hours walking the streets and enjoying beautiful historic 500 year old viejo San Juan!!! Beautiful architecture and amazing bright colors and fun atmosphere. Great place to take pictures. Best to time your visit when it’s not packed with cruise ship tourists. Parking is difficult and there is lots of traffic and streets are narrow and sometimes blocked. Take an Uber or taxi. My wife and I went during the day and it is very safe. Just stay out of La Perla neighborhood.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 6, 2024
- Kathy J K4 contributionsOverall experience - weather was great most of the time. Cloudy days still result in a sunburn.Very relaxing trip at the Hyatt Vacation Club in Dorado. Finished in San Juan last two days, and truly loved it. Felt very safe, people very friendly. Favorite spots to visit were the fort and the cathedral, along with eating Puerto Rican food. Utilizing Uber was fantastic. Surprised at how many places didn't accept cash, only credit cards. Also - menus were more of a qr scanner option, no paper menus.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 8, 2024
- Charles YAtlanta, Georgia803 contributionsCompact old town with narrow cobblestone streetsCompact old town with narrow cobblestone streets, colorful historic buildings, and a distinctive Puerto Rican flare. Some of the streets are more residential, some have mainly bars, others have lots of restaurants, some have local art and jewelry, and there are the unavoidable tourist shops each carrying the same collection of wares. It can be navigated in a day or leisurely in two days. If taking an Uber into town note that cars drive the streets at about the same speed as one can walk. It is best to be dropped at the top of the hill by the Fort, or at the bottom of the hill by the Plaza Colon (where there is a statute of Christopher Columbus). If driving, be aware that street parking is almost impossible but there are a few parking decks. In general, it felt safe walking around the town, although late at night it is best to avoid dark, empty streets.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten February 9, 2024

- GinnyKChoctaw, Oklahoma46 contributionsBeautiful and historicBeautiful area and very walkable from the cruise port. Be advised that the streets in Old San Juan are brick and uneven. The sidewalks are narrow - but if you are in reasonable shape you can see it all. We visited churches, fountains and saw many iconic sites while visiting San Juan on a recent port stop. It’s a beautiful city and made my bday stop extra special.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten March 9, 2024
- hbhakhRoanoke, Virginia2,352 contributionsVery niceWe have visited San Juan numerous time, mostly by cruise ship. Many ships dock at the base of Old San Juan, making it easy to visit. There have been many improvements over the years and the area is now filled with historic sites, shopping, and restaurants. There are plenty of tours but it's easy enough just to walk around and enjoy the sites/attractions.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten March 12, 2024

OSJ has something for everyone. Despite the negative reviews- as long as you aren’t seeking trouble, OSJ is about as safe as any other major city. Keep your wits about yourself and be kind. You may actually gain some humility and appreciation for the culture. Located just steps away from the cruise port, you will find the robust city of Old San Juan. With its brightly colored buildings and fascinating architecture, you'll want to allow yourself some time to roam about the streets and take it all in. There are several places to tour, dine and shop (including a giant Walgreens within eyeshot of the cruise port in case you need to restock before embarking). If you were to walk off the boat without an itinerary, you would find plenty to do in this energetic and friendly city. Walking Old San Juan is enjoyable so long as you're not in a rush; however, there are several hills and slopes, so those with mobility issues will want to gauge how far to go on foot. Of course, you can easily find taxis if you're going to venture further out and visit the forts or some of the beachfront options.
San Juan is a beautiful port, but with our particular itinerary leaving at 2 pm, we only had a few hours to choose how we would experience this island. We opted to use our time to tour the beautiful Old San Juan area and take up some cuisine that tourists and locals recommend.

We stayed for 3 days in Old San Juan. It is very walkable with lots of things to see and plenty of restaurants. It is rather touristy and can be crowded when the cruise ships come in. It is also pricey, in comparison to the rest of the island. It is difficult to drive in the old city with lots of one ways and too many cars. Once you arrive and park, leave your car for the duration. All of the hotels have a deal with a parkade for $15 a day - 3 days cost us $40 but without our hotel “proof of stay “ it would have been $140. We walked to Condado and to Isla Verde, but it was a long walk.

First off, a word of caution! This place is build on cobbled stones so a very comfortable pair of walk shoes are paramount for walkabouts!
This was our cruise's first port-of-call. Arriving at dusk, we have only a few precious hours to take in the local scenery and savor some local delicacies.
Houses in this part of town all have different exterior color schemes as controlled by local bylaws. This makes every new streets and corners a new discovery and eye-opener.
Places was very busy after dark with tons of bars and tourists.

We needed a break from the holidays and work so we booked a trip to San Juan. One of our friends recommended that we stay in old San Juan and he was spot on. I can’t imagine going to PuertoRico without staying in old San Juan for a while. The forts were great to visit and the nightlife was very cool. Restaurants have authentic food and good prices. Would recommend staying in old San Juan if you are going. The Airbnb prices are reasonable and you get to stay in some great authentic older homes.

There are plenty of sites to see here, including the castles, museums, the churches, and the governor's mansion, but it also has a great restaurant and bar scene. I would try to avoid it on the days when multiple cruise ships come to port, and it is easy to look up the schedule online. It feels far more genuine and chill when the cruise ships are not there. The trolley is certainly worth it.

Old San Juan is a must see in Puerto Rico. We went there for the artist craft festival which was lively, filled with music, food and local artist. We also went several other days to shop , tour, fine dining and another day eat at food trucks. It is a beautiful old city. So many shops and beautiful buildings. The first night I wore kitten heels and was much more comfortable the other days with flats or walking shoes. The side walks are small with a good amount of people walking up and down the cobblestone streets.
On the port which is also a beautiful view. We had amazing weather and enjoyed different aspects each day.

The architecture and infrastructure in Old San Juan made it worth a visit. The area is quaint, but there weren't as many shops as we expected. With that said, we did find a great art gallery with original works at reasonable prices. We also ate an authentic Puerto Rican meal that really hit the spot after spending so much of the day walking up and down steep streets!

Old San Juan reminded me a lot of the French Quarter in New Orleans. While it is quite touristy, there's a reason the tourists come there. It's historic and also quite beautiful. It's full of restaurants, bars, and gift shops, which gives the place a lively feeling. It's definitely a place every tourist should visit.
One issue with Old San Juan is that it's not easy to get there from elsewhere in the city. I primarily relied on public transit, and the buses in San Juan just aren't very reliable. It's a short ride from Condado to the old city, but the wait for the bus to arrive can be an hour or even more. Taxis were beyond my budget, and had I rented a car I think it would have been a chore to drive to and in the old city--not to mention the difficulty and expense of parking. I walked from Condado to Old San Juan once, but it is a rather long walk (three miles or so). I wish there were reliable public transportation connecting the old city with the rest of San Juan.

Lots of tourists shops; catering mainly to cruise ships that dock nearby. Some restaurants. We enjoyed rolled ice cream at Himalaya Ice Cream - very good! Don't try to drive in Old San Juan. Easy to walk around (sidewalks are narrow though); use a pickup/dropoff car service to get you to Old San Juan (Recommend dropping off at the Tourist Information Center, right on edge of Old San Juan and easy walking distance from there to everything in Old San Juan). Friendly merchants, etc in the area. The Museum of Latin American Art is worth a visit as well. The Cathedral was lovely - and nice little park across the street.

I went a month ago and they are very empty. Most of people want to go to Hawaii but I would recommend come here to avoid the crowd. People are friendly, lots of great food option. Everyone follow COVID guideline. I highly hope you can come and see the beauty of it.

Heading to PR with family of 4 and renting a car at the airport, any parking tips you can share?

Hello, I can help with your question! We parked very easily at the "Multipiso Covadonga" which is walking distance to Old San Juan. It is a parking garage on Calle Juan Antonio Coretejas adjacent to the Departamento de Hacienda.
Enjoy! The island is gorgeous and the people are amazing!

Hello- when we travel we like to pick up small original water colors as a remembrence of where we have been. Any suggestions in Old San Juan- street market or other areas where we may find someone who does this? Thanks in advance.
Written January 21, 2022
There is a market with local vendors, similar to a flea market. I can't remember everything there but if you like to pick up local art this is definitely the place to find it.

Considering a trip to Old San Juan. Don't, however, was to mobbed by cruise ship hordes. Is one part of Old San Juan better to keep as far away from that as possible?
Written August 2, 2021
The good news is that it's a great time to visit San Juan if that is a concern because the cruise industry still has not come back to full service since COVID. Here's a tip we got from the locals: even when a cruise ship is in port on the south end of the old city, the tourist passengers tend to stay right along the wharf and not venture more than a block or two into the walled old city. If a cruise ship is docked stay away from the south wharf and southeast corner of the old city. Everything else in Old San Juan will be typical size tourist crowds. We loved the people of Old San Juan and the cuisine of Puerto Rico, but more than anything LOVED el ron!
