We were in San Juan in July, the day after Governor Ricardo Rossello resigned. There were celebrations all over San Juan that afternoon into the evening. The plaza had live music with dancing. A great sight to see after days of rioting and destruction. Very scenic place to stop and take in the scenery.

The Plaza del Quinto Centenarioin Old San Juan is a plaza near the waterfront with a multi level area that gives incredible views. A 40 feet tall tower known as El Tótem Telúrico stands tall in the middle of the plaza. The totem is meant to symbolize the origin of the New World. there is a circular water fountain.

Old San Juan is filled with plazas as gathering spots. This is a must just as are others. Plazas are filled with a mix of tourists and locals and you can almost immediately tell who is who. A great place for people watching.

Bounded by Calles Morovis, Del Cristo, Rufino de Goenaga and Norzagaray, this multilevel plaza, known locally as Plaza del Quinto Centenario, sits at the highest point of the city and commemorates the 500th anniversary of the “discovery” of the Americas and Puerto Rico. The lowest level includes a fountain, popular with children, that unfortunately was not running during our visit on a weekday morning, although we did observe it from a distance during an earlier weekend visit to Old San Juan. At the center of the highest level is the unusual but interesting 39 foot (12m) high sculpture, Totem Telúrico, made of ceramic and depicts replicas of archeological artifacts. Other than the fountain (when running) and the unusual ceramic sculpture, the plaza is mostly a concrete expanse that we found not very comfortable or inviting on a hot, sunny San Juan day.

I paused here, leaving El Morro, turning a map every which way trying to locate the entrance to Museum of the Americas. Had I read a sign instead of the map, I would have realized I was in the plaza next to the museum I sought. The Totem Pole on the south side of the Plaza is a pictorial of Puerto Rico's history. I used the quiet time to rest my weary feet, before taking on a 3-story museum. The block-sized plaza offers solitude, perhaps because tourists don't have to stand in line and pay exorbitant entrance fees.

I really enjoyed seeing the Plaza of Five Centuries commemorating five centuries since Columbus discovered the Western Hemisphere. It was built in 1922. It is hard to believe that in about 8 years it will six hundred years since this event took place. The totem I found most interesting. A must see when in Old San Juan.

This is a beautiful plaza, right by San José Church and the Cuartel de Ballajá, built on 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the New World.

From this square you get great views of the Cementario, the Atlantic and El Morro. The large totem in the center symbolizes the "new world". The square is close to the Plaza de San Jose and Calle de San Francisco where you can find lots of bars, cafes, eateries and evening entertainment.

We walked past this place. It was nice to see. I didn't understand the totem pole but the fountain was nice.

Not a busy location & a great site to see. There is a water feature at the bottom, great to cool off in on a hot day.
