This should be the starting point to check out the city.

This plaza it is the center of the historic area, with many of the older buildings having been maintained and restored. It has benches located around and under some lovely trees, surrounded by fountains and statues.

There is the cathedral, the firehouse, some restored neoclassical buildings and homes, the mayor’s offices, restaurants, hotels, souvenir shops, banks, and more. It was well worth our time walking around and exploring the area.

One of the prettiest features of the plaza is the fountain. Other sights located around the plaza are the Ponce Plaza Hotel & Casino, Fox Hotel, restaurants, coffee shops and gift shops to buy some souvenirs (like the famous Ponce paper mache vejigante masks). Keep in mind that sometimes street parking may be hard to find.

Ponce is one of the most beautiful cities in Puerto Rico. You can see there El Parque de Bombas, one of the Icons of the city, the Ponce Cathedral, Plaza las Delicias is Beautiful and other great places. La Guncha is a nice place to visit, but since Huracan Maria the area of the Paseo Tablado does not exist.

Exploration of Ponce should always begin with this square. Because of its beauty you’ll get a chance to fall in love with Ponce right here. Stroll. Admire the Cathedral and the surrounding old buildings. Sit down to take in the beauty of the magnificent fountain. „People watch” at a nearby cafe. Truly lovely. It will make you happy.

I wouldn't go out of my way to visit, but if you're nearby why not stop by. The Firefighting museum is there and the street vendors have some yummy options. Cute row of toysellers on one side of the park.

Most of the buildings around the square have been repaired, rehabbed, etc. and do not show signs of hurricanes(s) and an earthquake. What were historic bank buildings, and are now used for other offices, looked great. In fact the whole centro looks better than it did when I've seen it in the past.

Quite a few people walking, but nowhere near the numbers we expected, having spent many Christmases in various cities in Mexico.

Businesses seem to have mostly abandoned what may have once been a thriving downtown. Of the merchants that remain, 75% were closed or closing at 3:30 on a Saturday afternoon. There were a few restaurants and coffee shops open. Don’t go out of your way to visit.

This is a rectangular main central square seen in almost every town in Latin America.
It's the meeting point of locals and families with bars and restaurants around it.
Central point of the square occupies the Cathedral like everywhere else, but here the main star is the red/black Ponce fire station leaning on the Cathedral's back side.
Many benches to sit around to cool in the tree shade and a nice fountain.

La Plaza de Ponce is at the heart of historic Ponce. It is a nice place to relax, observe the water fountains and check out the interesting lions of Ponce. Take time to walk through the El Parque de Bombas which adjoins the area. There is a nice Catholic Cathedral, but you can only enter during Mass. It is worth spending a couple hours checking out this and the surrounding areas.

The plaza really is something to see. A stunning cathedral is the highlight (which we attended a very nice Mass in). The painted lions all over are very, very cool. The fire station is pretty neat and it serves as the location to hop on the trolley. To top it off, the awesome, AWESOME Kings Cream is right there, serving fruity flavors at cheap prices. The one downside (on many levels...) is the homeless. They are all over, like most downtowns, but these ones are not too shy about approaching and begging. They're liable to be sitting in doorways, by the lions, the church, etc. I gave out a buck or two along the way so just be aware, you will see them and you will likely be approached at some point.
