While visiting the main plaza in Ponce we visited this restored old fire hall, now a small museum. We were offered a free tour by a personable young guide. We learned lots about the building and city's history in an entertaining 20 minutes. Free clean bathroom was a bonus!

This red and black striped wooden building was built as an exhibition in 1882.

It later became the firehouse. Today, it is a firehouse museum.

It is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. The museum is free and open 7 days a week, 8am-3pm. Kids will love the fire truck.

The Parque de Bombas is a nice place to visit. It is free and provides a historical perspective to fire fighting in Ponce. They have an old fire truck and a lot of antique equipment. It takes maybe a half an hour. Masks are required, as in all indoor public spaces. After take a walk around the plaza and maybe get a bite to eat nearby.

While this wasn't a quick stop, I was staying across the square in Ponce and it's a beautiful building so I had to go visit. Described as one of the most iconic buildings in Puerto Rico, it was manned by two employees who were incredibly helpful in answering our questions in both English and Spanish about the museum. They seemed genuinely passionate about the history, and even provided us with recommendations of other places to see in town.

El Parque de Bombas has a unique and wonderful history. They are open every day from 8:30am- 3:00 pm. When you visit make sure to ask them to tell you the story of the January 25th gunpowder fire!

Historic and interesting spot on the main square in Ponce. Guides provided plenty of info enthusiastically. Free! Great for kids. Small very colorful building with a display of old firefighting equipment and pictures honoring past Captains. Houses a restored fire engine.

Certainly the most famous edifice in Ponce. Set on the main town square, leaning on the Cathedral's back side you cannot miss this striking red and black fire station.
It used to be the first fire station in PR, now converted into a small museum, free to enter. Great photo op and very cool to visit.

If you are or are related to a fire fighter or a fan of unique architecture this station/small museum is a must do. The building honors the fire fighters who stopped the Great Ponce Fire from destroying the town. There are some photos and exhibits on the upper floor and on street level is (at least one) antique fire engine in the garage. I have seen photos with 2 and once 3 trucks there - so that number may vary. The station is located in the central square of Ponce. There are numerous shops and a church and nice small hotels and cafes around. I visited just before Christmas so there was a Christmas Market set up in the park behind the station. The Ponce Lions also make a nice photo. The questions below ask if it is wheelchair accessable - the entire park and the street level of the fire station is. There are stairs to the gallery with the photos. I did not notice an elevator. As for the time limit: If you were in a rush you could do the station and take photos in less than an hour, but if you have the time the park and the surrounding buildings are all photogenic. You could have a beverage or ice cream and spend as much as 2-3 hours here.

My uncle was the last fireman to work at this fire station back in 1960's.I remember vividly, my mother would drop by to see him during his lunch break. Great memories. It is one of PR's most notable buildings, by far the most easily recognized landmark in the Island. In 1990, the fire station was closed and was converted into a museum. On July 12, 1984, it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. I take great pride in sharing this with friends; my uncle Calixto was a great person.

Fabulous quick and free tour. The guide was proud to share the heritage and story of the firehouse. Beautiful stained glass windows and very cool items on display. The fire engine was not at the house because it was being prepped for Carnival. Guide was very nice and knowledgeable.
