I was always aware of the rich collection, especially of European paintings, in the art museum in Ponce.
This was my first chance to see it.
Visiting the museum, we were not aware of its current condition. No source gave the updates.
The complex apparently suffered in 2020 earthquake and is still undergoing repairs. Only 2 floors are accessible to the visitors but they really give the flavor of the museum collections.
We were informed that the museum is open on Fridays and on one Saturday a month. We were lucky that it was THAT Saturday. There was no entrance fee.
The architecturally beautiful building complex seemed at this point intact again, but they may not fully reopen until 2026.
There was an outdoor music concert in front of the museum. The museum gift shop was open. The limited exhibitions were available on the second and third floors.
For me this visit was worthwhile. I am looking forward to revisiting this interesting museum when it fully reopens.
We were able to leave our donation to the museum and buy some beautiful souvenirs in the store.

Coming to Ponce, the last thing I expected to find was such a well curated museum. And much to my surprise, it had one of my favorite pieces - Flaming June. The museum's history is interesting and it shows how personal taste can create an amazing collection.
Small space, easily accessible art. Definitely worth the time and visit. Small gift shop that doesn't take advantage of the collection. Absurdly low entry fee - which I appreciated because it allows more people to access the collection. However, I strongly encourage those who can to donate so the museum can continue to benefit future generations.

First to enjoy is the structure. It capture your sight and mske you feel you are in a magical place. Then when you get inside it you could see great masterpices from diffrent painters and sculpture. The light is perfect to enyoy those masterpice. The outside garden invite you to meditate and watch the details of a well build building.I love the place because is so peacefull and beautifull

My family and I drove from San Juan for the day just to see this museum on the recommendation of a former local who works with my wife.
I owe that guy a bottle of rum.
This might have been the most surprising and delightful two hours of our week-long trip to PR. After a gorgeous morning drive on PR-52 right through the center of the island complete with sweeping views of the mountains, we arrived at the museum around 11am. Parking on street right behind the museum was a snap. There is a nominal fee to get into the museum, but don't let that discourage you. It is worth every penny.
From the moment we walked in the doors we felt welcomed. From the desk staff to the security guard to the guide who volunteered to take us on a tour, we felt like we were among friends before we were even out of the sun-bathed foyer.
The tour was very interesting and entertaining. Our guide spoke excellent English and explained to us the origin and stories of many of the artworks, including how they came to be in Ponce. I will not spoil the stories for you so that you can enjoy hearing them for yourself.
The museum also has a restoration facility on-site, which I think is wonderful. It is very clean, spacious and perfectly sized for a single morning or afternoon of exploration. When you are done at the museum, be sure to head a few blocks north to the town square for some cassava mofongo at Lola like we did. You will not be disappointed.

There is a lot of art by colonial European and United States artists, a small handful of paintings by Puerto Rican artists and zero paintings by women. I’m not impressed.

This museum have historical paints, sculptures and even a relaxing garden. The amazing high ceilings and the beautiful marble stair are the beginning of the wonderful visit to this place. It is ideal to have a tour guide, but if you do not have the opportunity to have it's all right. Usually they have some special activities and presentations, I may advise to call in case you can take advantage during your visit.

This turned out to be a major surprise. Maybe I had low expectations in the first place. However there was some seriously good art exhibits here. A lot of European painters and a lot of Puerto Rican ones too, that is until August 2018 (the latter exhibits go back into storage then). You must get one of the two daily tours (in English and Spanish) to appreciate this museum. Plan on spending 2 hours there as a result.
