This nice small museum has artifacts related to music that you won't see anywhere else. The best part of the experience was talking with the guide who was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. He really brought the displays to life through his explanations.

This small museum dedicated to the various traditions of Puerto Rican Music is housed in mansion a few blocks from the Parque de Bomberos. The collection consists mostly of art, musical instruments and masks. During our visit, we were the only guests. Our guide was able to give us a private tour of the collection. More importantly, he gave us a passionate and well-informed lesson on the history of island's musical traditions, supplemented by examples he showed us on his phone. We were enraptured for over an hour - including our 12 and 9 year olds! Also, what a beautiful space.

When we planned our trip to Ponce, I knew I wanted to check this out because my husband is a musician. It was a small museum, but well worth the visit. The director was excellent. He talked to us for a long time, answered our questions, and really had a passion for music. It's a free museum, why not check it out?

We drove lickety-split south to Ponce specifically to see this museum on a Sunday, since it closes on Monday and Tuesday. We got there a little before 3 pm (it was supposed to close at 4:30) and it was already closed. I had our hotel call and there was no answer at their number. I guess they had a slow day and decided to leave very early. But I wouldn't count on this museum being open unless you confirmed it in advance.

This was a small gem in the center of town. Great museum that deals with the music of Puerto Rico especially from the city of Ponce.

Take the guided tour for free and walk around viewing different instruments. This stop is quick and easy on your 'to do' list. Unless you are a music lover, this is something that is on the 'nice to see if I have time' list. There are different styles of music in each room and the instruments that partake with that style. I peeked outside and it looks like they may hold concerts, but it is infrequent as I have been told. The last room holds some cute styles of instruments. I wish that we could hear the different styles of music, but the radio played modern stuff.

Despite mixed reviews we felt the museum was worth a visit. We loved it all!
Our great, articulate, informative guide shared fascinating and intriguing histories of the impressive array of instruments. The best part is that being a Saturday, there was a dance class with live music and no doubt we would have been able to join in had we had the time.
This visit took no more than one hour. They closed for an hour at lunch.
If you're expecting a Manhattan or Paris museum forget it! This is a museum from the heart and soul of Puerto Rico.

Had not been to Ponce for 40 years so it was quite a sensation to drive down from San Juan on an expressway that cut 3 hours off the old route, and drive into a city that has so much charm and can easily take up 1-2 days of your time. The Museum is first-rate...with a lot of history of the collections and staff that are very helpful. Enjoyed the children's groups as well. The restaurant is quite special, with a top-flight chef and menu items.
Beyond the museum, take the trolley from the downtown park for a quick tour that will then give you a better idea of where you want to spend more time. Enjoy the people--not always trying to sell you something, more common in San Juan.

As a musician I was really excited to visit this museum in Ponce and was completely crushed when we arrived and it was closed for unknown reasons. The guard at the back shooed us away and shouted "Closed!" All information from the tourism office at Parque Bomberos said it was open. Sad to have missed this.

It was an experience in itself. Looking at Folk and Popular music, its interpreters and how the world has embraced our musical legends.
