Very disappointing visit: no guided tour. A 30-minute video covers the history of Martinique, delivered at high speed by the practically still image of the commentator. Without this video it is impossible to understand the meaning of this visit. Several places to try to understand with signs that are undrinkable because they are written in small and tight characters. Some explanations can be scanned on a laptop but many links do not work. Our children aged 17 and 13 were really bored. This village is one of the Old Town museums which have no interest in being visited independently. In addition, the price of entry is really expensive for the little satisfaction you feel when leaving. NOT RECOMMENDED because it is really not informative.

I had mixed reviews after visiting this place. I was really looking forward to learning more, but most of it is in French. The introduction video is also in French. The entrance fees is quite expensive.
The area is quite clean and immaculate. It takes around an hour or two to go through the entire gardens. They have also opened a new cafe.
They had a very interesting flush less toilet with a conveyor belt where you have to press a pedal which moves the conveyor belt.

The site is certainly pretty, although very concrete, the panels teach quite a lot to those who do not know the local history at all.
On the other hand I found absolutely no soul to these five boxes that give their name to the site... And what about the village of Arawaks, really badly screwed, all concrete terraces covered with pieces of roof tiles (but why???). All to say that fans of authenticity will be disappointed.
So duty of memory ok, but I would have preferred to put the 34€ entry (with family) in a good history book.

The background is interesting but it’s very commercial
The site is rather pretty but the price seems a little high for 30 minutes of video and 45 minutes of visit.
Overall quite disappointed with the visit

Set in beautiful grounds and only a short drive from Trois Islet, La Savane des Esclaves is a must visit site. It is one if not the best sites I’ve seen in the Caribbean depicting the history of the island and the slave trade. With plaques clearly written in English and French the site provides a fascinating history of Martinique with a story line that picks upon on key individuals instrumental in the Abolishment of the slave trade and the history of this beautiful Island of Flowers and people. Difficult to leave this site and not think about the peoples of Martinique and the wider Caribbean. Touches the heart and soul of what is to be a Martinican.

If you are unfamiliar with Martinique, you may wonder if La Savane des Esclaves will the worth the drive up the narrow twisty road. Yes, the visit to this privately created and owned outdoor museum is worth it. Our group did not have a a guide. We found the 30-minute video presentation (in French with English subtitles), along with the descriptive signs (again in French and English) more than adequate to illustrate this dark episode in Martiniquais history. The museum honors the strength of the people who lived this story.

This place allows you to understand how Martinique was built.
It deserves to be visited by both the authorities and tourists.
Gilbert Larose has accomplished exceptional work - without subsidy - guided by a passion for the history of his island.
The setting is magnificent and the objective of better understanding Martinique has been achieved.
Do not miss.

This is a very beautiful achievement.
Very well explained at the start by a video from its creator.
The visit is very pleasant, we can learn a lot about the life of slaves and their treatment.
History must not be forgotten and here it is a beautiful tribute to all those humiliated people and even more by the colonists.
To do of course during a visit to Martinique

A very interesting visit and an extraordinary work of memory on the part of Mr. Larose, we feel the passion which gave rise to this project. Thank you for this transmission of more than important knowledge.
I highly recommend if you want to learn a lot about the history of the island
And extra bonus point for the delicious homemade fruit juices!

Bonsoir,

I would not recommend using taxis in Martinique. Taxis are rare in this country and not a good way to travel. You should rent a car ...
