Day Trip from Antigua

This is an amazing place and shows how much devastation occurs when a volcano erupts. The environment is totally different to anything I've seen!!

After having been to Plymouth in Montserrat in 1992, we always wanted to go back but knew that the volcano in 1995, which kept erupting for 15 years, would keep us from ever seeing our favorite island again. And then we read that tours of the exclusion zone were available so we booked a villa, booked our flights and rented... More

Spent 2 years on island and it is strange to be near such a sleeping giant of a volcano 24 hrs a day. i recommend a tour of the deserted Capital Plymouth which is under 30 ft of Ash there is such a eerie feeling of a rushed departure like Pompeii in Italy, for instance the brand new hospital which... We took the tour of the buried city of Plymouth with Scriber's Tours. Scriber arrived with a driver, Peter and a expert on the area, Steady. (We learned everyone on the island has a nickname.) Once the paper work at the police station was completed, we were off on the tour. It is strange to go from lush tropical jungle... More

We participated in a "Buried City" tour that was an excursion from our cruise ship (Windstar). Only organized, government approved tours are permitted. Don't expect excavated ruins as in Pompeii. However, still an incredible view of the devastation to the town of Plymouth brought about by the volcanic eruption of 1995. There are several buildings standing that one can walk... More

There are many beautiful rain forest trails all over the Soufriere hills. There is an excellent look out to see the Volcano. If you like to walk through lush valleys with much flora and fauna, spectacular vistas, these hills are just the thing. You can explore on your own or hire a guide. There are several available, and all are... More

Touring with Sun's Montserrat Island Tours, we paid a fee and were police escorted onto the ash, dirt and rock buried city of Plymouth. A must do! You will probably never see anything like it again!

Just like the title says, the volcano is a huge draw and the people keep you coming. It is both sad and fascinating to see the vast amounts of damage that was inflicted on the region and to see the sheer size of the volcano that is still steaming. We took a tour into Plymouth to see the destruction. The... More
