- psudinoWeehawken, New Jersey4,431 contributionsAmazingly, the store closest to the cruise ships was the least touristyWhat I really like about this shop is that it had the culture of the Dutch. Philipsburg was just a giant cruise port with a bunch of duty-free shops and didn't exhibit any of the culture of the island. The cheese here was outstanding and all of the other chocolates and snacks were actually Dutch. If there's only one place that you shop at when you stop here on a cruise ship this would be the place I would recommend if you want any relationship to the origin of the island.Thank you psudino! This is exactly what we were going for: to bring back the Dutch culture back to the island. From our Dutch cheeses, to Dutch cholate, candies, chips, chocolate, sauces and even souvenirs! We're happy you enjoyed your visit with us and we hope to see you again soon :DWritten March 31, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten March 16, 2024
- Mindy SUnited States13 contributionsMust visit shop on SXM!Cannot believe we have been coming to SXM for nearly 30 years and have only just discovered Amsterdam Cheese &Liquor! We did a cheese and wine pairing with Margarita today and it was WAY beyond my expectations. The shop has an amazing array of products from delicious cheeses, wines, spirits to lovely jewelry and many things in between. This shop will definitely be on our must visit list for our visits to our home away from home island.Happy to hear you found us! We've been in operation for a little over 10 years now and will continue for many more! Margarita will be happy to hear you've mentioned her! This shop is just a block from the cruise ship pier. The trolly train stopped for about 10 minutes. A thin cheese sample was given out upon entering. Couldn’t pass up the wonderful Dutch almond cookies, still warm from the oven, that were available for purchase - 3 for $5. No one on the tour purchased cheese, however. Interesting store but wouldn’t make it a destination, especially with concerns of getting the cheese back through customs and security.

Hi Betsy,
glad you found our store to be interesting. We are the only Dutch store on St. Maarten, and also the only cheese store on the island. The concerns (some) people have about bringing cheese through customs and security are not justified; You are actually allowed 20lbs of cheese through US customs! Main rule, keep the cheese sealed. And the cheeses we carry can last a week and even up to 6 weeks in air-conditioning, so it travels just fine. Hope you stop in next time and try more of our cheeses!

This was my second visit to this wonderful shop. My first visit to it was during a port call on Royal Caribbean's Grandeur of the Seas, I bought some small gouda cheeses with caraway seed. Also, I bought 1 of their insulated bags to keep the cheeses from spoiling. The bag worked fine and, the cheese turned out to be excellent. When I made port here again in January 2022, this place was at the top of my list. It's within walking distance of the cruise ship port and, you go by it on your walk into Philipsburg.
The staff are very friendly and helpful. They have a good selection of real Dutch cheeses that are imported from the Netherlands. I haven't tried any of their liquors so, I can't say if they're any good. Price wise, I thought they were reasonable.
Overall, I was very pleased with this shop and would heartily recommend it to anyone though especially to any cheese lovers. It's a great shop and worth looking for if you're in St. Maarten.

A cheese lovers dream- haha! Many different cheeses with free samples on offer. Also many different rums & liquors, also with samples. A good selection of gifts and trinkets.
We had some ice cream, homemade almond cookies & drinks on the front deck . We purchased with a few different cheeses ( cheddar & black truffle) and some chocolate rum ( who knew there was chocolate rum?! ) We also found a great funny T- shirt for cheese lovers.
The rum & cheese, left unopened, was easily transported & cleared customs. Yay!
Highly recommend this shop for the variety of unusual , delicious food products and their helpful, friendly staff!
Incidentally, We were in the parking lot looking for our shore excursion meeting point, when a store employee noticed and asked us if we needed help. We would have not even noticed this shop if it weren't for their helpful friendly staff !

We stopped in to check the place out, we were greeted and we learned we could do a wind and cheese tasting the following day. They had a nice setup with a sample of cheese and some wine. Sasha led the sampling, explaining about aging the cheese and flavor /texture of the cheeses. The shop offered packages of various cheeses for purchase as well as a good size store offering dutch specialties. An enjoyable visit.

Extremely overpriced and staff was unprofessional. Only one cruise ship was in port so maybe they are just there to rip off passengers. Rude male attendant was not informed on products for sale in store. Did not have any aged gouda and we were denied a sample of the one available. We still purchased cheese to taste the product so his plan worked. We found some better options at the Super U for a great price. This place is tourist trap.

This stop was part of a St. Maarten tour we booked through Royal Caribbean cruise lines. It was the Double Decker Bus Tour which I recommend. The cheese store was interesting and they offered us a sample of new cheese and aged cheese. It also had many other items available for purchase. Our guide offered us a stroopwaffle cookie which was sold by the bag at the store. I enjoyed the taste of the stroopwaffle.

The owner was SO helpful! We stopped to ask directions and this man offered to take us to the sunset cruise that we went on. We went back the next day and we're offered samples of cheese and liquor. Very nice people and a great place to stop and enjoy what's there.

Able to transport cheese purchase home easily. Sharing the large Gouda wheel with friends and family at home in the United States was wonderful. Cheese directly from St Maarten was great tasting and its transport made an interesting story to share.

It's easy to bring your cheese back home...well if you can resist opening up the vacuum-sealed cheese. Do enjoy! See you next time :D

I heard about this place from someone on my dive boat one morning off the coast of Sint Maarten. Knowing that my wife loves wine and cheese tastings, I decided to take her. Etienne presented the cheeses one-by-one and was a perfect host. It was quite an educational experience and the cheese and wine were delicious! After the sampling, I noticed that they also carried a good selection of whiskeys, at which point we transitioned into sampling various single-malt scotches. This was a great experience. If you are ever in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, you should consider stopping by!

Hello, I've booked a cruise on the 29th september 2018 and I will stop by this store to purchase a black Old Amsterdam wheel, I bought one about 3 or 4 years ago and was incredible. Can someone tell me about how much is the price of the wheel these days? I know its pricey, but I'll certainly make budget for one. Thanks!!
Written September 13, 2018
We do not carry a wheel (25lbs), but we do have cuts from it:
1/2 wheel=$240
1/12 wheel = $49
1/36 wheel $18
