- Cutler Bay Travel2 contributionsEnduring History ~ Last Operating Distillery on TortolaWe rented a Taxi and got dropped off at Cane Garden Bay and walked to Callwood Distillery. (Maybe 1/3 walk along the Beach?) We paid $5.00 for the Informative Tour which included 5 shots of Rum. We paid $25.00 per person for the Taxi and he left us there for 4 hours and then returned to pick us up and take us back to our Cruise Ship. Cane Bay a a slice of Heaven.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten December 21, 2023
- Jody K4 contributionsGood Rum…Definitely check it out. It’s a neat little place, but the recommendation is to go and pay the $1 for the tasting. We did the $5 tour - and it’s exactly what you should expect from a $5 tour. The rum is really good - and the guy who led the tour was funny.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten April 18, 2024

It is am amazing stop with such great rum. This place a big step back in time but has an amazing rum. When first get there you are like is this place still operating? Yes and it is a mess but a once in a lifetime experience. The bottles in the late 80's look like they just picked them up on the shoreline. It doesn't look like it would pass a health inspection but the rum is amazing. I chose the oldest date on the screen but this was in the 80's and I would love to revisit.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten June 4, 2024

It was very crowded, and was a fair wait to get to do the rum tasting. I like to sample locally made rum when on holiday in the Caribbean....lets just say, I've tasted better rums!
Overall, I'd drop in if passing, but not worth a specific journey to go here. We visiting twice - as the first time we visited we couldn't get in the door due to several busloads arriving ahead on us.

We really enjoyed our visit to Callwood Distillery. The young lady there gave us a great tour ($5 per person). She did an excellent job of explaining the old equipment there and how they produce the rum. At the end of the tour, she provided small samples of each type of rum they produce. And she gave us the opportunity to buy some of their rum, which we did!

it was so nice to see that they have preserved this historical site. the young lady who gave us a tour (only $5, including a tasting of 5 different rums) was very knowledgeable and very sweet. the rum tasting was interesting and enjoyable, we took home a bottle of their 10 yr old rum home with us. excellent!

The Callwood Distillery offers a wonderful tour and story of the history of the distillery. At the end of your tour you will have a chance to sample the vairous styles of rum produced on site. You will be amazed at the simplicity of the production of rum, from sugar cane adjacent to the distillery. You can purchase rum to take home with you, as well as some t-shirts to remember your visit.

What a neat place. Rum making like it was 360 years ago. The same family has owned it since the late 1800's. Michael, a descendant, runs the tour and sells the product. He also does double duty at Quito's Gazebo and is an all around nice guy. I brought home a bottle of rum from Callwoods and my son, the expert, claims it was better than any rum from my trips to 11 other Caribbean islands. Now that's saying something

Callwood Distillery's main showroom is a step back in time. Casks, machinery and furnishings appear very old and authentic. It gives one the feeling of sharing an experience with a visitor from 100 to 200 years ago.
The staff is friendly. The T-shirts are attractive and affordable. Worth stopping by when visiting Cane Garden Bay.

This place has been making rum for the last 400 years and most likely made rum for the pirates of old and us modern day plank walkers, as we indulged in a little sampling. The place is one step up from the rum maker facility we visited in the Amazon that used a horse walking around a 100-year-old press to squeeze out the juices from the sugar cane. When we asked him if he ever used a horse to run his press, he said Yes, but the horse died.

Quaint old historical rum distillery. $5 outside tour, we did not do. $1 per person for rum tasting - we did that and it was good. Old historical building and it felt good to support a small local business!

We were on a cruise and took a bus to the beach. The distillery a local church and small outdoor market were just up the road a short walk. We ended up not spending time at the beach. By far the best rum ever. Still processed like it was in the 1600's. Can only purchase it on the island. Wish we had gotten more. Have several kinds which you can sample at the little gift shop. Highly recommend.

How long does the tour take? If I have 2 hours to get to and from the cruise port and do the tour and tasting, is that enough time?
Written January 11, 2024
Yes, you should have plenty of time. The tour is about 14 minutes but the drive over and back is worth the trip. You can walk across the street to the beach and dip your feet into the water....

I think many people get the impression that the Callwood Distillery is some big commercial operation; whereas, it is a small family operation with not a whole lot to see other than the still in an open area next to the small oak barrel aging enclosure. This small family operation has been handed down through generations, what some might call a micro distillery, where they grow their own sugar cane and hand make rum the old fashion way. They are secretive about their overall process, and rightfully should be. They don’t make a bunch of rum infused flavors, just quality white and aged dark rums, maybe a spiced rum or a sweet sipping rum on occasion. This is why their rum is so very good, hand made by one family from start to finish, from growing the cane to handing you the bottle. It’s made from pure cane juice and not molasses such as most commercial rums are, so if you are prone to overdoing it sometimes, you will rarely have a hangover. The family is happy for you to see what’s before your eyes from the growing cane, to the still, to aging barrels, to the bottle or bottles they will sell you at a reasonable price. The smell alone will get your attention, then on to the smooth taste and enjoyment. From my extensive rum collection from around the world, few come close to the quality of the Callwood’s “Arundel,” maybe one French cane rum from Martinique and another from the Dominican Republic. While some may disagree with my assessment, remember rums are like people, no two are alike, and I can only impart opinions from my many years of rum-making education and tastings from numerous brands. I hope this may ask and answer a few questions about the Callwood Distillery which I trust Michael will agree with as a result of my many visits to Cane Garden Bay and his distillery over the years.

If at Cane Garden beach , is it accessible to walk from beach, and which direction do we walk
Written November 27, 2019
Yes, the entry is west of center. There is a sign.

As much as you want. You may have to pay duty which is minimal, or you may not. If you are traveling by commercial aircraft, it must go in checked luggage, but pray it makes it intact.
Private aircraft, it does not matter how you pack it in. I have recently brought in a case from Callwood Distillery on a cruise ship which they take from you upon boarding and return the night before debarkation. We claimed the entire case with customs, but were not required to pay duty. I think it is at the custom agent’s discretion (be honest and be nice).

Are the rums all flavored or do they have a plain rum?
Written February 2, 2019
The last time I checked flavored is not one of their things. You might find a sweet or spiced rum, but primarily they have dark and light rum, some aged longer in the dark rum. I collect rums and their dark rum is one of my very favorites. Take the cap off and smell the aroma; you won’t be able to resist. It is also made from pure sugar cane juice and not molasses which means you will not have a sugar hangover if you ever over do it; makes a great Cuba Libre.
