- PolarBear007Ottawa, Canada20 contributionsAn inland wonderEverything in Grand Cayman seems to be oriented around the shoreline. When you've got such great beaches, snorkeling and diving; that is how it should be. Venture inland a bit too the Botanical Garden to see the diversity of trees and plants that somehow anchor into the craggy rocks and sand. Lots of Cayman parrots fly above as you walk through a variety of environments they have created. The orchids weren't blooming but it was interesting to see their air root systems and the trees while walking above the razor edged coral rocks. Heritage sand garden was interesting as is the Rankine house. Cacti abound. Roadkill Cactus brings a chuckle just for the name, but it is accurate. Highlight is the Colour Garden. Tonnes of flowers and plants. Amazing to see what we'd call houseplants in their natural environment. If you want to see/touch the rare blue iguanas do not show up late for the tour. Very prompt departure. So we went left of the Highland trail and were able to see a couple through the fence. We were then on a 6 ship / 20k passenger day. Cruisers were nowhere in sight. Place was very quiet. Guess they head to Seven Mile, turtles, Rum Point and Stingray.Visited January 2020Travelled with friendsWritten January 30, 2020
- Patricia VColorado Springs, Colorado181 contributionsDefinitely Better When the Orchids are in Bloom, But Go for the Blue IguanaWe visited in the month of February, when most of the flowers aren't blooming. Recommend this more during the warmer months, particularly towards June when the orchids are in full bloom. This is the place to see the blue iguana. They're a bit more elusive, and definitely less blue in the winter, but it was still cool to get to see a couple hanging out on the road. Props to Saige, our guide for the visit (we had a handicapped individual and we received an offer to ride in a golf cart). Saige answered our billion questions about the plant and animal life.Visited February 2020Written February 19, 2020
- SuperkattSweden6,711 contributionsQueen Elisabeth II Botanic ParkA big park which lies in the eastern part of Grand Cayman, so plan at least a couple of hours here! It takes about 45 min. to go by car from Georgetown, tickets can be bought at ticket office in the entrance building, you will also get a map of the park. Here is the only place where the blue iguanas native to the Cayman can be seen in the wild, the species is endangered now. As well a whole lot of different flora, birds and butterflies, an orchid park and a typical Cayman house are presented. In the botanical part of the park there are many places to sit and rest, so a day or half a day here is a good idea for leisure type travellers or nature photographers. Try not to hurry through it. The iguanas roam free around the park, the colorful parrots fly above, and sun shines. Best place to be in the nature surroundings at the Grand Cayman. By the entrance there is a shop with souvenirs and refreshments and WC, admission rates are 8 CI dollar, and no pets are allowed in the Park.Visited January 2020Written September 5, 2020

We saw 5-6 animals in our brief one hour visit. That included blue iguana, gecko, snake, capybara, frogs, turtle and colorful bird. It is hot and humid walking around the garden. So good to bring a wet towel to wrap around neck or a small portable fan. Orchid area we saw frogs in the corner of the wooden fence, so good to keep eyes out for them. Overall I think it’s a little pricey for visitor admission, $25 per adult. But the excitement when we discover an animal makes it worth the visit. Would recommend when one is done with water sports and beach at cayman and wants a change in scenery. Shop at the garden also has nice tropical pattern clothings and items that are tasteful.

This is certainly a beautiful place & a peaceful place. However, I’m sure there are prime times of the year to visit & Aug isn’t one of them.
When we visited, it was very underwhelming & there wasn’t much to see.

We visited one morning about 10 and stayed about 2 hours. The self guided map was helpful as well as the staff. My favorite part was the “color” garden! The upkeep and attention to detail is British, I think.
It was well worth our time!

Beautifully layed-out and well maintained botanical gardens where you can see lots
of local plants and wildlife (the highlight of course being the blue iguanas roaming the area) and learn about Caymanian nature and history. Definitely recommended!

We spent a beautiful morning exploring these gardens. The Color Garden and the very kind woman at the ticket desk (who has cared for these gardens for the last 27 years) make this trip well worth it!

Gorgeous botanical park that preserves local species of both flora and fauna. I was highly impressed with the variety and spaces
created in the garden. I was there midday in July and the paths are thoughtfully designed for shade so that the experience can be enjoyed without overheating. The children’s area was amazing- lucky kiddos.

We absolutely loved this beautiful garden! So meticulously maintained and appealing to our gardeners but also to the twenty-something’s who had fun with the monitor lizards! The gardens are stunning especially the color garden. It’s huge but there are lots of places to sit & just enjoy the view. Nice play area for small children too. The orchid garden was amazing but they were not at their peak while we were there—I can just imagine how beautiful it would be when they are all blooming—but it was still enjoyable. I loved the cottage garden and historic home. Go early in the day when it’s cooler. It was a highlight of our trip!

We enjoyed visiting this botanic park. It wasn't very crowded that morning and we were lucky to be able to have a guided tour riding in a cart since we have knee problems and it was a very hot day. They have a children's area where they can play. I walked the walkway through the Xeriphytic Garden as the cart cannot go through there; I saw lots of orchids and other plants growing on the trees. The Heritage Garden with a Caymanian House showing how life was at the turn of the century was interesting. The blue iguanas were around in several places but the Iguana Habitat was closed; one very big one was by the entrance to the gift shop. Snacks and souvenirs were reasonably priced in their gift shop; there is no cafe. They have nice air conditioned restrooms. There are mosquitoes so wear bug repellent, but they did have some outside the gift shop you could use if you forget it. I love looking at plants so I did enjoy my visit here

The Queen Elizabeth II botanical garden is worth a visit! The gardens are well maintained and beautiful. There are several exhibits on Caymanian life that were interesting. There were blue iguanas on the grounds, although the gate to the conservation center was locked. Bring bug spray and enjoy your time here.

I understand I can take a public bus to the park from my hotel but what about the return trip? It sounds like I would have to take a taxi, what would be the approximate cost of that be?

Very easy to do. Public bus drops you off and ladies in shop called bus to pick us up for return trip.

How far is this from where the ships come in? how long did it take you to get there?
Domi
London, UK122 contributions
It's quite far. I don't think many cruise shippers visit it because they often have to be back on the ship by the early afternoon.
That said, in a car I would leave about 40-50 minutes to get from the cruise terminal to the park (to account for traffic and visiting for the first time).
Is there a fee to enter the park?

Yes there is a fee. They also seem to have a discounted fee, if you buy the Botanic Park with Pedros´Castle together. This gives a substantial saving and both are recommended to visit if you want to learn a bit about the islands history and culture..

Hi, I've heard that the park is not really wheelchair accessible due to deep gravel and exposed tree roots. We are visiting in June and my partner, who will be having a hip replacement while in Grand Cayman, would really love to visit the park.

Transportation to and from seven mile beach hotels
How much is the charge to visit the Botanical Garden
Pedro St James ... H
George Town, Grand Cayman
You can take the Public Bus from Seven Mile Beach to the George Town Bus Depot (lots of Public Buses pass Seven Mile Beach, approx every 10mins).
At the George Town Bus Depot, hop on the East End Bus to the Botanic Park. It will cost approx $3 CI per person per bus ride (so approx $12 CI per person round trip on the Public Bus).
Admission to the Botanic Park is $10 CI for Self Guided, and $15 CI for Guided Tours. Guided Tours are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2PM.
You can always call ahead of time and book a tour with Hal, if he is available. Or call the Tourism Attraction Board office, if you cannot get through to the Botanic Park.
You should be all set!
Just pack some water, relax, and enjoy the beauty and nature that abounds in the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park :)

We are coming on a cruise ship (Liberty of the Seas) on June 15 and would love to visit the Botanic Park. How is the best way to get there? Is it far from the pier? Directions?
alxm13

It would probably take at least an hour, as it took almost that long coming from our hotel on Seven Mile Beach. There is often traffic at the port when ships come in, so make sure to account for that. I would suggest using the app Waze for accurate directions that will recalculate according to traffic conditions!

Do you have any tours that will meet cruise passengers at the pier and return after the excursion? We would really love to visit your gardens. Thank you.

We walked about a block over from the pier and got on a local bus (mini van) that took us to the Botanic Park. It made several stops along the way with locals getting on and off.
We spoke to the Botanic Park staff who called us a taxi for our way back to get on the ship with plenty of time to spare.

We were there two weeks ago. We bought a stuffed animal blue iguana for my granddaughter. She took it to school and it is missing. She is devastated with the loss. (I do not know why she got so attached to it) Kindly let me know how I can purchase another and have it shipped to her here in California. It would make a liottle 4 year old girl very happy. The iguana was approximately 12" -14" inches long. Let me know the cost and shipping and I will call you (Please provide phone number) and give you address and credit card. Thanking you in advance for your assistance and response to this request. This site will not let meleave an email. With your phone number I will call you.
Respectfully,

Robert, did you ever get your granddaughter's blue iguana replaced? I am going to the gardens tomorrow and would be willing to look for a replacement for her. Helen
