I was referred to Lumbadive last year while visiting Grenada. I took a day trip to Carriacou where I had the pleasure of meeting Richard and Diane. Yesterday, I returned to Grenada after spending 5 days once again on Carriacou with Richard to obtain my advanced open water certification. I ended up doing 9 dives over 5 days, more than what was needed but to add to my comfort and experience. Richard by far is the best and most detail oriented instructor I have ever encountered. It’s not just his wealth and depth and breadth of knowledge but his approach. The way he explains things. His desire for the student to truly understand what he is teaching you. And making the student put the effort and the work in, not just giving the student the answer. In 5 days I went from an uncertain and nervous diver to someone who now possesses the fundamental/ core knowledge to keep me safe and my dive buddy safe. I am so beyond appreciate of Richard for this amazing experience and giving me the gift of diving. I highly recommend Lumbadive and a trip to Carriacou. The diving is incredible and Lumbadive is amazing.

My diving experience with the Lumbadive club led by Diane on the island of Cariacou in the Grenadines was exceptional! Diane and her team are competent and passionate professionals. They have created a warm and safe atmosphere for all divers, from beginners to experts. The dive sites were magnificent, full of colorful and diverse marine life. I highly recommend the Lumbadive club to anyone who wants an unforgettable diving experience in the Grenadines.

Being right next to the marine reserve means a superb array of fish and corals , rays, turtles, lobsters etc can be seen. What made this even more special was the way in which the four of us with individual experiences and capabilities were looked after. We had a mix of experienced diver, a first time diver, plus those who could not dive but were able to snorkel instead. A really experienced and patient dive instructor who could not have been nicer. A memorable day

We have dived all over the world for the past 20 years in big islands and small islands so we've seen a lot of dive operators.

We suggest you use Lumbadive ONLY if you have lots of dive experience. The guides, particularly Richard, ignore the divers that they are suppose to be guiding bringing two people not in our group into depth and current beyond their capabilities resulting in abandoning the dive. Luckily no one was hurt but it could have gone badly.

The other redflag for Lumbadive is that they have no local people working there and one thing that is really important is that dive shops utilize local people both for the knowledge of the island, dive sites as well for the economy.

Diane, one of the owners, was unfortunately laid up with a hurt knee and perhaps if she wasn't our experience would be different. The young captain was very helpful and conscientious and took safety steps.

Do be cautious and know you are on your own if you dive with these folks.

Scubadiver 2002 Thank you for your review. We are taking seriously your comments. And will adjust ourselves with futur divers. Weather and tide in January month is sometime unpredictable. As it was your 2 last dives, the instructor chose Sister Rocks, one of the most pristine dive spot in all Caribbean. First 20 minutes were nice and easy. No one expected big current as it was mentioned in the briefing. Suddenly a fairly strong current made the dive difficult to manage and impossible to return to the boat. Dive should have been abort right away. But counting on the number of years experience, the instructor let you continue the dive returning to departure point. Although, we dive this site 2 to 3 times a week for last 10 years, once in a while we experience similar situation with the current. Regarding the local staff be aware that Merlin our boat captain is a local. We introduce many local to diving and bring 2 of them up to Dive Master. One didn't like guiding, and the other one stole money and equipment .We are still searching for the rare pearl. I, as owner accept the critics , but I take this opportunity to mentioned that even thought you book 10 dives each (group of 4) you cancelled many for which we have not billed you, like many other dive centers do. We also lent you for free a full consol in replacement of yours that was defect. I beleive that we deserved to mention these 2 facts. Even if you were not satisfied with that specific dive, Lumbadive provide you a quite good service. Thank you again for your comments. Regards,

We had a disappointing experience with Lumbadive and Richard the divemaster. The equipment was poor, with all of the tanks leaking air. The boat was in poor repair and only one of the two motors worked. Richard and the boat driver had contentious communication with each other, making all the guests uncomfortable. The dive weights were distributed on our way to the dive site, with Richard objecting to the amount of weights requested by each guest. It was a big production and Richard had difficulty getting each person the proper weights. There was a strange level of drama about how to defog a mask, making all the divers feel inept in not knowing how to squirt soap in the mask. On the second dive Richard told us a dive master was not necessary for this dive and we could simply circle the reef on our own. When we descended we found an incredibly strong current, too strong for the group. 3 of us ended the dive after less than 10 minutes, with Richard ending the dive after 20 minutes. The last 3 members of the group didn’t know the dive had ended and fought the current hopelessly for 20 more minutes. We had to load and unload the boat with tanks, etc so not full service. Richard tries to hide behind his personality but in reality he’s not a great/safe divemaster.

Dear Kevinr, I am Diane Martino Owner of Lumbadive PADI 5 STAR, It took a while before I could get access to my Business account. But finaly it works. I am very sorry for the experience you had and mostly for the reply wrote by Richard, using my identity. You understand that he is no longer part of our team. You were totally right in your statement. When I came back in Carriacou, I was able to see and confirm all that you mentionned. The boat was taking care of , equipment maintenance done and new staff hire, in order to offer the quality of service Lumbadive PADI 5 STAR has always provided. We always work to offer the best service and make sure people enjoy themselves. I will be please, if you ever come back to Carriacou, to offer you a free dive, hoping to erase the bad image this ex-employee left you. Please accept my appologies for the bad experience you had. Do not hesitate to write to me directly using dive@lumbadive.com Yours truly. D Martino, Owner & PADI MSDT Instructor

I was lucky to be able to do 4 dives with Richard. We was my referral instructor for Wreck Diving and Night Diving. He was very informative and made sure I understood what I was about to do and how to do it. He was also eager to share his extensive scuba diving knowledge in other areas and as a newer diver I really appreciated that. He also has a great sense of humor that I appreciated. The local boat captains were also very experienced and efficient. I appreciated that the everyone took steps to make sure the reef and animals are preserved for the future. I've dived at other places in Grenada and I would definitely rank this one as the best. You will appreciate the smaller groups and more individualized attention.

These guys let me down. I booked a Discovery SCUBA day with a view to going on to do my PADI and when I turned up they'd taken a booking from a family of 3 instead. I understand they receive more money for 3 than 1 but that sure isn't the way to treat customers. Still, the positive is that the other dive school in Tyrell Bay was fabulous, truly fabulous.

Yes, we let her down. After many visits, our instructor Raquel and I wrongly assess that scuba diving may not be for her. She proved us wrong as she got certify by another dive center on the island. We feel now that we made the right decision not to tell her our feeling. However, we feel it is not fair to receive a low score as she never use our excellent service as shown in majority of all other review. Should TripAdvisor allows such a review? It is you to figure. Heather, you did not do a review for the dive center you took your course with. Why?

I really like Diane and Richard who own Lumbadive and I am sure they will have learnt from the mistakes that were made on that day. Richard was boat captain and he didn't hear us surface from our dive, so we were cast adrift in the sea for almost two hours kicking hard against a strong current before we were rescued. I am a competent diver and have never been so afraid. The experience actually put me off diving - but I have just booked a week of shore diving in the Red Sea, so hopefully my confidence will return.

As I said, Richard and Diane are lovely people and what happened was a mistake, but it did happen and TA is a place to share experiences, both good and bad. They will probably be the safest dive shop now as a result of that day.

I, for one, will not be diving again unless I have an emergency PLB with me.

Pilotlady it is very sad and we hope you were able to pass over the stress and are still diving. That morning, the 2 Dive Masters and 2 Advanced divers were very enthusiastic about diving on the new discovered site “Shark Dorm” located south of Carriacou. One diver had to end the dive after 9 minutes due to ear problem. The 2 buddy teams were separated in the ascent and drifted in a strong mid-surface current. Wind and motor noise avoid the boat captain to ear their whistle while the boat was reaching the normal exit point. The 2 teams were drifting fast. Few incident aggrieved the situation; the SMB of one of the dive master broke and went away in the current during the ascent, the main dive master intercept a fishing boat and decide not to get on the boat in order to pickup other divers. Boat Captain starts the search when he realized the divers were not coming out after the schedule bottom time. Finally, boat captain pick up one of the dive master and all other divers were saved. Yes, there were a lot of stress, but luckily, no one was injured. Since then, Lumbadive increase security level, implement more rules and add safety equipment. Dive master SMB is deployed when dive starts, delayed SMB is provided for every two (2) divers, whistle and mirror have been added to each BCD, light on DM SMB. This is insuring the boat Captain will follow the divers wherever the current brings them. On top of it, a two (2) way radio with a range of 30 miles or portable VHF in an underwater housing is carried by dive leader in order to communicate with dive boat on returning to surface. According to some report, more then 1,000 divers are lost at sea every year. Now there is a new tool: Nautilus Lifeline which combines VHF and GPS in a housing. There are already more then 50 dealers in Florida, USA only. You are invited to join us again to acknowledge the additional safety we did add. We are now, for sure, the safest dive centre in all Grenadines.
