we hired roger neckles to take us birding for the 8.5 hours we would be onshore from cruise ship. we saw 80 species including 47 life birds, some endemics, and without having to hike into rain forests. he met us at ship, he drove, he spotted, he identified, he dropped us back at ship. excellent variety of habitats. if your cruise ship stops in trinidad and you want a day of birding you could not ever do better than this!!!!!

Beautiful and memorable trip to San Ignacio Lagoon to visit the gray whales calving. Have been on more than 20 "whale watching" trips in the last 45 years, and that is not what this is. It is actual interaction with the whales, mostly calves, while the mothers keep an eye on them from nearby. They swim up to the boat, seemingly curious, and come out of the water, wanting to be touched. Most enjoyable--great food and great people at the camp, and fine travel companions. Great pictures and memories! Highly recommend!

The whale adventures to interact with the Pacific Gray Whales, mothers with calves primarily, were just off the scale wonderful. When an 80,000 adult brings her calf alongside the boat, connecting with nature just doesn’t get better.

We had four boat trips with the whales, limited to 90 minutes each in the whale observation area. The whales approached the boat close enough to touch on two trips. They remained more distant on the other two trips. However, we watched some calves jumping out of the water and we watched a research vessel.

Roger Neckles was an outstanding tour leader, especially with his prior experience at San Ignacio Lagoon. Our accommodations were quite primitive with outhouses an bucket showers, but that is the nature of the area. After getting sprayed by the whales on the boat, a bucket shower was refreshing. The camp staff were very helpful and the food was quite good. The boat captains were very accommodating and quite skillful.

We flew to and from Tijuana on a twin engine plane, landing on a crushed shell airstrip near the San Ignacio Lagoon. The flights were beautiful experiences that reminded you that the Lagoon is quite remote.

I have been fortunate to take many nature focused trips including four to the Galápagos Islands. This trip ranks high among the best trips of my life.

Travel with friends is always the best and this experience was laughter, amazing birds, beautiful vistas, miles of coastline and the culture of the market filled with fresh fruit. Can sugar bananas or veggies get any better? Carina Swamp watching the Scarlet Ivis and Flamingos lift off at sunrise was a highlight as were the Piping Guans. We saw 3 with their crests up and another 5 in a nearby tree! We added 146 new birds with amazing photography. A trip like this can only be amazing if your guide knows the best places, Roger made each day THE best day Ever!!!

Fun, amazing and adventurous are words describing our birding trip with Roger Neckles in Trinidad and Tobago.
From boating in the Caroni Bird Sanctuary Swamp to see the Scarlet Ibis and Caribbean Flamingos, or trekking in the rain forest to find the elusive Trogon, to being immersed among Hummingbirds at a designed sanctuary, to boating Little Tobago Island to watch soaring Red-billed Tropicbirds, this trip was a thrilling lifetime memory.
Rogers choice of accommodations was “spot on”and food choices with the flavor of the Caribbean was the “icing on the cake”.
Thank you Roger Neckles!

If you want to go birding in Trinidad/Tobago, then Roger is the guide you will want to go with! His knowledge of the bird life on these two islands is second to none. Sometimes he hears them, other times he spots them, and when the going gets tough he has the uncanny ability to call them in. On top of that, he’s incredibly fun to be with. Laughter and joy are in abundant supply while he goes about tracking down those hard to get lifers and he’ll put you up in wonderful lodges while you stay with him. He is also considered by most to be Trinidad’s premier wildlife photographer. You won’t regret birding with Roger Neckles!!

I spent 3 days in Trinidad with Roger in late November 2022. The first moment you meet Roger you know he has a great passion for photography, wildlife, conservation and birding. I saw a huge array of “lifers” including macaws, speckled tanager, ruby-topaz hummingbird, all three trogons and too many to mention. He is a terrific guide that knows the bird calls and a great eye in spotting and identifying the birds! I genuinely loved every second of it. After 3 days I had thousands of pictures to go through and appreciated the photography guidance that Roger also provided! Very pleased with the amount of birds I saw and also the photos!

I would highly recommend the tour and I look forward to being guided by Roger again in the future!

A day with Roger is a day of adventure. Roger's workshop was three seperate full days in beautiful parts of Trinidad off the beaten path. Getting up early to see nature at its best, as the morning unfolds into its beauty, is how we began our day. Then, to capture nature's beauty in a camera was part of our lessons. Its not about taking a picture but making a picture. Avoiding "garbage shots", looking at what's in the frame, watching reflections, shadows, exposures, working with a tripod expeditiously, settings and hoping your subject will stay a moment to get that good shot was part of the thrill working with Roger. His tips and instructions taught were most helpful to me. Getting to use my camera off of auto settings and use manual settings to get a richer and more colorful photo was a great learning experience with Roger's guidance. On the final day, Roger went out of his way so I could experience seeing the Macaws. He did not disappoint as he seems to know where every bird is found. At first they were not in their usual spots so we drove around until we found them in some very back country roads later on. As our luck would have, we saw both the Blue and Gold Macaws as well as the Green winged red Macaws. There were so many other birds and nature things we saw. He even talks to the birds calling out in his bird voice to attract them to see as noted calling Toucan calls much like a chicken peeping. My experience will last a life time in memory with this wondrous, unique and fascinating adventure. Definitely, I'd recommend any of Roger's outings as a must do while here in Trinidad especially if you're a nature enthusiast.
