Cane Bay
About
Located on St. Croix's north shore, the waters are not always gentle along this palm-tree-lined beach, but scuba diving and snorkeling are very popular here where less than 200 yards out is the drop-off called Cane Bay Wall.

Worth the drive to check this beach out. It was a little crowded on the day we went, but plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the view and the water. The beach isn't wide, and it backs right up against a busy road. The sand was mixed with rocks, so I would recommend bringing water shoes with you. The water stayed shallow pretty far out. There are no services (chair rentals/bathrooms), but there's a Leatherback bar and grill really close where you can get drinks and food if you need it.

Our #2 favorite snorkeling site this trip. Easy entry and so much to see. Squid, Needlefish, octopus, and juvenile turtles. Water was crystal clear and calm. Rented chairs for $10 but that might just be when cruise ships are in and the guy took them back early afternoon. Don't really need them though. Great lunch (and walkup window) at The Landing across the street. A must visit if you like to snorkel.

This is a nice beach for relaxing and, of course, the beach is highly rated for snorkeling. On the day we went it was overcast and rained a couple times. Not the best day for a beach break but sometimes it can’t be helped. I would say parking was easy on the street next to the beach and so it was no trouble to enjoy the beach while keeping an eye on your vehicle. Seemed like a pretty safe area overall anyway.

Let's do an honest review with no cognitive dissonance reflecting how much of a pain it is to get here, how terribly expensive it is for everything and how the people of the island seem to largely resent the tourists. Okay, so about the beach: there is a quick trough into which waves rush, making it dangerous for small children. To me, the sand felt more like dirt clumps than sand. If you are not staying at the resort, the parking lot is tiny and hard to reach and a real challenge to your sudpension The reef around this entire island, including buck island is mostly brown and dead or dying so fish are found in ones or twos, not schools. Besides that, it is great.

The tide was rough when we were trying to snorkel in Cane Bay. Please please please be sure to wear shoes and be very cautious of where you step. The coral is very fragile and the sea urchins are abundant! Standing on shore we saw a sea turtle and while snorkeling saw loads of sea urchins and many kinds of fish. We also saw a wide variety of coral. The coral grows pretty far up on the shore, to the point we were concerned about scrapping our bellies on them as we swam in. Great beach to sit and enjoy, but be cautious for snorkeling!

My wife and I planned to go to Cane Bay for a half day. If not for the strong winds, surf, and riptide warning we would've spent a full day there. It's a gorgeous spot with a decent stretch of sand. Given the high surf, we didn't get in the water much so we also missed out on snorkeling the reefs there. There are a couple restaurants there that could make a full day trip easy without packing a meal. Definitely worth a visit for the gorgeous, mountainous coastline and the reefs if you can access them.

We wanted to see a beach on the North shore and Cane Bay has a lot going for it. Park at the Landing and enjoy lunch there or a scoop of ice cream at the little hut outside the Landing. Bring your own chairs, though. There is not a great option for renting chairs (if that is important to you). There is beach with palm trees for shade and rentals for scuba and snorkeling. We vacationed with teen kids and grandparents and found parking to be easy and accessible to the beach. It was a little more rustic than we expected.

We did not actually go to the beach at Cay Bay beaches they do have here are small and rocky. There are a few man-made looking beaches, but they’re usually packed with people is a rocky. We at a restaurant there and it is very lovely. Very beautiful views we ate at the restaurant,

Currents were too strong to snorkel, and the reef wall is so far from shore. We encountered divers coming back who said it was far too dangerous to snorkel out especially with kids. This beach backs up to the road and it directly across from a bar where people were loud. It’s a small beach with some shade. Wasn’t really our jam personally.

We rented a house a short walk to Cane Bay Beach. Cane Bay is a good central spot on the island and you can drive to either side within 25 minutes so it's a good area to stay to get a feel for the whole island. There are several restaurants and small beach bar right on the beach! Also amazing more upscale dining at AMA right down the road, again in walking distance. The beach has plenty of trees for shade, it's a bit rocky in some areas and more sandy in others, however you can still enjoy the beautiful ocean.
