Step streets used by the residents of Charlotte Amalie, these historical 99 steps (the actual count is 103) were built from the ballast bricks of the tall ships coming from the old world, which would then return to Europe loaded with products from the islands.

Visit the beautiful Steps and some of the original homes of St Thomas. Lovely views! Good exercise as well!

Took a cab to blackbeards castle from phantasea botanical gardens. Only open on Tuesday and Wednesday when cruise ships are in port. Tours are around 9 or 3/4 pm only. Gates are locked shut in between those times and you can't see anything unless you...More

Actually 103 steps, 4 added to bring the top to street level in more modern times. Beautiful view. Enjoy

Great place to view - beautiful fauna. Quick.....talk the trip down the steps. An easy way to say you walked 99 steps...which is actually 103!!!

You can walk the steps (actually 103) pretty quickly. You should wear sturdy shoes because the steps are uneven and the railings pretty rickety. I would have loved to see a historical marker explaining the history. I read about it online.

If you park at Blackbeard's Castle and do the tour then you end up at the bottom and can walk back up via the historic 99 steps. The steps are a famous landmark of St Thomas.

Underwhelmed. It is tourist stop on the self guided city hike. Pretty flowers and nice view. Still need to climb a very steep driveway to the castle.

Set of stairs going up from Charlotte Amalie. Part of the self guided walking tour. Visit St. Peter and Pauls church and the Governer's house.

We are very active so kind of liked walking up the hill and up the steps. Decent view and on the way to Blackbeard's castle (which is different than Bluebeards castle). Would not necessarily go out of the way for it.

The view was really nice but the walk was kinda a let down because Blackbeards Tower at the top was closed. The hours for that place are really weird. You can also just drive up to the top which would have made it better because...More

I don't think it can be closed... per Torben above, it's public. However, many of sites (pirates tower, the rum distillery) appear to have fees involved. We were just walking so did'nt pursue. It's a nice invigerating... More
