Step streets used by the residents of Charlotte Amalie, these historical 99 steps (the actual count is 103) were built from the ballast bricks of the tall ships coming from the old world, which would then return to Europe loaded with products from the islands.

Beautiful views walking down the 99 steps to the main street - across from the bay!!! Recommend wearing sneakers and leave the purse at home!! Just bring ID and money for shopping/eating.

Great views and interesting history. Was disappointed it cost so much to get in Blackbeard's Castle but worth the walk!

My experience are amazing. I had to do a lot of exercise. It needs a lot of strength to climb the stairs.

The hike was not difficult (I'm 60, in decent shape) and the views are worth every step. I enjoyed the statues of the Three Queens, former slaves who led a revolt.

99 Steps was a fun little side trip to our Blackbeards Castle Tour. It was fun to do it to say we did it!! It is definitely exercise, especially in the heat and depending on how fast you do it. We got a cool picture...More

As the title states 99 steps is nothing special but steps. Something to see if you are in the St. Thomas area but nothing you want to write home to your mother about.

There is a long staircase next to Blackbeards castle. After the tour, we ended up down near Main street. Going up the 99 (actually more) stairs takes you back up near Blackbeards castle parking area.

We walked up the steps on a self-guided tour of Charlotte Amalie, having got a shuttle bus from the cruise port (which is not really necessary as it is a pleasant walk into town). The steps are bordered by nice houses and provide great views...More

We hiked the 99 steps up to Blackbeard's Castle only to find out they were closed. However, 99 steps had some great picture ops.

We stayed in a villa about half a mile from Blackbeard's Castle. Well, actually about 99 steps down and about 99 or more up. It was a great walk with amazing views. We loved it and recommend it. Bust the Governors Mansion while your there.

I don't think it can be closed... per Torben above, it's public. However, many of sites (pirates tower, the rum distillery) appear to have fees involved. We were just walking so did'nt pursue. It's a nice invigerating... More

I have heard mention of pools at the castle, are these accessible to the public? Or part of a paid tour?
