More than half of the shops were closed. Restaurant charged prices higher than the menu prices, claiming they were "after the hurricane" prices. $30 for the cab ride to/from our hotel to this place. Pretty much a waste.

If you’re looking for amazing drinks and a fun island atmosphere or want to find souvenirs and gifts to bring back stop here. The local merchants are very friendly and very appreciative of your business. You’ll find mostly small stands but a few larger stores. We were mostly interested in shopping in the smaller stands and talking with the locals. We were asked to take a tour of a nearby resort and just in doing so we would get free lunch and gifts. We had nothing on our agenda and the woman asking us was sweet so we took the tour. There was no pressure on us and the resort they showed us was amazing but we were just respectful and said it was something we would need to think about. But yep they gave us a free lunch off a limited menu but it was very good and they gave us a choice of free gift valued up to $40. Then they took us back to Port Lucaya market and we walked down to the best bar on the island Rum Runners. The vibe there was great and bartender Markus treated us well. We ended up singing country songs loudly at the end of the bar with 3 of the regulars and had a great time. Don’t forget to sign a dollar bill and put it up on the wall to leave a token of your visit there for good luck.

This was a great find. I came here with a friend to do shopping. We ended up getting a mani/pedi, having a great lunch at fair Play, and shopping at the many stalls in the straw market. Vendors were friendly and weren't pushy. There was lots of variety in their items that made for nice keepsakes and gifts.
While I was there, there was live music on friday nights which was a blast.

We wanted to enjoy our walk-around through the port but we were immediately irritated by all the vendors who are non-stop about walking up to you and trying to get your to purchase from them; we left almost right away. Too bad because we really wanted to just enjoy the stroll around. Why don't these people realize the more they push the more you're not interested?!

Rundown! Was here roughly 12 years ago and the place was a lot of fun. Can not say the same this time around. Felt a little unwanted as tourists. Walked around with wife and kids and most places closed had some locals at one of the bars rudely staring at wife well we walk by as family made us feel very uncomfortable as there was very few places open and barely any other tourists. Visited some other places near by were we felt much more comfortable to dine and enjoy a quick getaway from Florida. The island still has a lot of potential to be a beautiful place again. But would find out more details about what hotels and business have reopened before coming back.

The Marketplace is like so many others in the Caribbean. This one is pretty with all the bright colors, and it was very clean and well kept. As far as what they offer, again, like many others in the Caribbean. If you come off of a cruise ship it's a decent way to spend a little time. I've been and it's not someplace I'll go back to again.

Very little was open despite the locals talking it up. There were about 15 booths of locals selling identical merchandise – very low quality tchotchkes, towels, hats, bags, and t-shirts. They all wanted top dollar. But Zorba’s Bakery is a must. Great treats at reasonable prices. Stock up for the week!

We were on the island for 10 days, and we stopped by here twice to see if we could catch the shops when they were open. There's very little shopping to do, and most everything is closed up. This is a dying island for tourism. Since Hurricane Dorian in 2019, there's been very little to bring life back to the island, and this once bustling shopping hub is now a sad place.
The workers here and throughout the island are very depressed and unhappy. This is not the Bahamas I remember, and we will never return.

This was our second trip to the area and the marketplace was somewhere we visited many times on our first visit. Things are a lot different since the last time we were here because of the hurricane they suffered a few years ago. It is very sad to see how things have changed for the residents and the island itself. We visited the marketplace 2 times this trip and still had a nice time even though there are many fewer vendors and many of the shops are not open. The marina is no longer open, so that was a big change. There are a few restaurants that are open and several bars. We still enjoyed visiting with the people who run the little souvenir shops. They are really fun to talk to, and you can understand how Covid and the hurricane have changed things for them. I am hopeful the island will continue to recover and the wonderful people who live there are able to get their businesses back up and running. We will definitely return on our next visit.

We are not your typical souvenir-buying, American, cruise ship tourists. We sailed our own boat here from the US, spending the last month exploring Eleuthra. Our guide books are more Lonely Planet than Frommers. This place reminds me of an outlet mall. Shops packed in cheek-by-jowl with a Disney aesthetic designed to represent "the bahamas experience." No, thanks, just not my kind of place.

how much will it cost for a. cab from freeport pier to port lucaya markt. whats the distance
Written May 18, 2022
Taxis are expensive and not reliable in freeport. It will cost about $30 each way. It's cheaper to rent a car for the day if you're okay with driving on the other side of the road.

Hi guys! We're cruising in just 19 days and I'm so confused about what beach is the closest to the ship Carnival). We'd like to take a taxi and maybe do some shopping? Any ideas are helpful. Thanks!

Port lucaya marketplace is where all the shops and restaurants are. Definitely take taxi there. We spent a lot of time here. Great restaurants! There is a beach down the road (walking distance). Not sure what facilities they have there. Rest rooms, etc. There is also a water taxi located near hotel that will take you from marketplace to taino beach. This is a wonderful beach. On one end there are restaurants with water activities. We noticed a lot of cruise people visiting this beach.

È possibile raggiungere Port Lucaya con bus locali dalla zona del resort Viva Windham Fortuna Beach?
Written May 21, 2019
a me in generale mi ha deluso tantissimo.
per il resto l'isola è molto bella e il mare è una favola!
goditi il tuo relax
buona vacanza

Having traveled to GBI many times we do enjoy the people and to quietness of it all. Our #1 question is: When will the Breakers Cay reopen. The small portion of Breakers Cay is open, the Light House Pointe and OK, rather stay in the Breakers Cay. BC has been closed since the hurricane of 2 1/2 to 3 years ago.We walked through BC and little damage showing. Open it and we'll return in 2019.

The large beachfront hotel building on the property was indeed damaged by the hurricane in late 2016, so as to be closed for business, and after much effort has recently been purchased by the local government (2018) after the owners were unsuccessful in selling it. The community wants it reopened, of course, but first it needs repairs. The government is not bohemian as someone typed, but they are Bahamian and everyone will do their best to get this open again. The rest of the property remains open for business, and the beach in front of the hotel property is usable by the public.
