Mermaid Reef is a quaint reef with fans, coral and small reef fish. It was a nice beginning to our sailing trip having just left Marsh Harbor on our way through the Abacos . Great for kids, Calm waters, the day we were there, it was easy to see the fish. For experienced snorkelers or divers it was a sweet beginning, but not an Ah! moment.

Good snorkeling, there were only 3 buoys which filled up pretty quickly. This area also appears to be quite popular with the larger charter group boats. They filled up the area with snorkelers and paddle boarders coming over. It's a good reef with very friendly fish that will come right up to you. Saw some lobsters and a ray here. Good beginner site to start with.

We had the place to ourselves and got their by boat. Lots of fish and area was protected so the wind didnt affect snorkeling too bad.

This island was wiped out in the 2019 hurricane and as of Jan 2024 has not recovered. Many of the restaurants remain closed. Our house was amazing, and the people are friendly, but there are limited resources. Make sure to book tours and golf carts early as we were unable to find any open fishing trips, island hopping excursions or golf carts available.

Just don't waste your time!!
This island is really nothing but an over blown lake with clear water, that has not one thing too offer. It's trashed up and just such a disappointing trip!

I love Abacos and surrounding cays. So much to do and great fishing and diving. We wanted to check out Mermaid reef but when you drove there, no parking and the access was all private property from the shore. Seems, Mermaid resort bought the land in front and made it only if you are staying there, you have access. If you have a boat, it is easy to moor to the buoys. If not, you might be outta luck. This was the only disappointing part of our trip here. Go see the other cays around. No name cay has the piggies on the beach.

Protected water, good reef for first time snorkelers. Had moorings so easy to access for small kids.

More fish and varieties than the two larger spots we snorkels at along the reef in the National park. Along with the usual species of fish, spotted lobsters and rays here as well. A few memorials have been sunk here to add to the reef by families whose loved ones enjoyed this spot.

This is a great spot for snorkling over and between the reefs with plenty of colorful and curious fishes. We took the dinghy to the nearby beach and swam over to the reef - this is not too far in case you are wearing fins. Depending on the wind direction, potentially a very protected area.

One of our last desperate attempts to make the best out of this horrible Island and we go to The Reef to find out that it has been fenced off by the new owners and it is no longer a public place apparently. It looks quite junkie anyway but we couldn't really get close enough to tell.

I have already been to the Abaco Islands in April 2018 and stayed at an Airbnb rental on a hill close to Mermaid Reef, 15 minutes walking distance and I’m planning to return in November 2024. What I want to know is, is there a beach I can visit at the same location or do I need to take a tour?

Hi! Are you able to Snorkel right off the shore? Or, do you have to be on a boat?
