This is a grand castle in local terms but modest by national standards. The staff in each section of rooms were very friendly, interesting and knowledgeable. The history of the family and their connections with past and present royalty was explained well. It would be possible to whizz around here in half an hour but we spent much longer thanks... More

My wife and I love historical places and we especially like castles and stately homes so when we discovered that we could actually STAY at Thirlestane Castle we couldn't book quick enough. From the time we arrived a drove along the stately driveway to the castle we were taken abake by how tranquil and quiet the scene was (well, in... More

This is a real gem. Fir a week you feel like you are living in a castle. It was so quiet, the views of the grounds with the sheep kept me amused. I bought my telescope the skies were dark and great for looking at the stars. The appartment itself was lovely. The nice little touches like a welcome pack... More

The castle has a beautiful exterior, so it's nice to go there on a sunny day. A lot of the rooms are closed off to the public, so the interior is not that impressive.

Many thanks for taking the time to review our beautiful attraction. It definitely has a stunning exterior. I’m sorry that you were disappointed the interior areas were closed. The Castle is not open to the public during the winter but opens for the season on 2nd May. We have many magnificent rooms to show visitors around with lots of interesting... More

Finally visited this castle after many trips to Scotland. Never thought it would be worth the drive and time but boy was I wrong! The volunteer who greeted us was so friendly and knowledgeable. She told interesting stories about the "home" and not just old facts. There was so much too see and enjoy in the castle. If going to... More

We were on our way to Melrose Abbey and saw the sign for this castle. We made a detour visit and glad we did. The castle is totally intact and looks more like an estate than a defensive type battle castle. It is packed with history....old and new....and includes visits by Queen Elizabeth! The estate has been in the same... More

Eye-catching red sandstone Scots baronial pile so afflicted by dry rot the family has had to flee to a nearby farmhouse. Don't let that put you off because conservationists are slowly winning the battle. Shame the upper two floors are both unrestored and off limits. The Friends of Thirlstane are on hand (though not in great numbers) to provide information... More

Six of us had a really informative tour of the castle - what Jean doesn't know about the castle and the family's history isn't worth knowing! Parking right up at the castle. Lovely welcome from local volunteers who clearly have a great passion and commitment to Thirlestane. Very pleasant cafe, gift shop, facilities and grounds to walk in. There's a... More

I am a big fan of visiting large country houses, but tend to avoid it with my children- ages 9 and 12. However, Thirlstane was not only good value as these places go - £20 for a family, plus extra discount if staying at the campsite - but had plenty to keep the children from being bored. Exciting history from... More
