My husband and little son got out of the car and immediately played a game of chess on the big outdoor board in the front yard while I ordered food at the front of the house. When they were done, they joined my mom and I in the idyllic back garden, full of flowers, vegetables, and fruit. There’s a little sink at the corner of the house for eco friendly hand washing before lunch, and clean well stocked bathrooms in the back. The friendly owners wore masks to serve us, leaving our food and drinks at a little table just a few steps away, as they did last year. The food was delicious, as usual. My son and I had the two meat options on the menu - a lovely ham and cheese quiche with soup, and two tender sausages with a wonderfully light and flavourful pasta salad. My vegetarian husband had so many options, and ended up with the cheese sandwich and soup. My mom had the garden pizza and side salad and loved it! I must admit that food is not necessarily what you come to Manitoulin Island for, but Maja’s is definitely one of the best restaurants around.Visited August 2021Travelled with familyWritten August 6, 2021
- westielover_TOToronto, Canada364 contributionsMaja's is Magical! We came to Manitoulin Island last year around this time and fell in love with the place, so we came again this year with our little son. We only discovered Maja’s on this trip and now regret that we haven’t been there before! The magic starts right at the front lawn with a fantastic and whimsical outdoor wooden chess set which my son and husband enjoyed after lunch. There are lunch selections available, as well as baked goods, grains, beans, and other foodstuffs to take away. The menu is organic, mostly vegetarian, and all yummy, with some of the baked goods also gluten free. We ordered our lunches, bought a nice big jar of local honey to take home with us, as well as a proper cycling jersey for my husband (the owner is in the Manitoulin Cycling Society) and then walked around the side of the house to the gorgeous gardens! There were lovely little tables and umbrellas set up (all socially distant), a vegetable garden, a little greenhouse, and lots of beautiful little corners to marvel at. In terms of their covid-19 protocols, we felt very comfortable there. Everyone wore masks in the little front store area, they have a hand washing station at the side of the house that they ask you to use on your way to the back garden, and they leave your food and drinks on a bar height table close to your table where you can easily grab your lunch which allows everyone to stay socially distant. My husband (who’s vegetarian) had a delicious lentil burger with Italian wedding soup. My little son loved his slice of ham, cheese and leek quiche, and I also loved my cheese and tomato quiche. The pasta salad we shared was also perfect - dressing wasn’t too tart, pasta was al dente. We enjoyed ourselves so much, we could have stayed there all afternoon (and I imagine if it were a bright, sunny Manitoulin day, with the gardens overflowing and the hollyhocks nodding, many people probably do!) We had some homemade sorbet and some type of apple pie with pecans that smelled heavenly and tasted even better! The only thing nicer was the wonderful, warm, and friendly owners who served us and made us feel welcome. Apparently they have musical acts there in the evenings sometimes! Would definitely recommend and return!hello there lover magicical gardens. Your lovely review made us all very happy. We love planting and tending our garden and sharing it with people like you that feel the love and energie that we are putting into our space. very glad you liked the food we cook with the produce our garden gives. The meal was pricey, but oh my gawd it was so fresh and delicious. Clearly they cook fresh every day. Even the bread is cooked fresh. We will eat here again! Oh - almost forgot: eating in the garden is very serene and relaxing. ❤️😋❤️Visited July 2021Travelled as a coupleWritten July 19, 2021

Lovely place With awesome atmosphere. Following the previous review: for health nuts! Dang right, and proud of it. This is real food that nourishes properly. Perfect portion. Right out of their garden. Very creative dishes. Check their menu online. Simply awesome.

I did not enjoy this bistro at all. But this was perhaps my own fault for not doing my research.
The setting and people were delightful. You order up front then walk around the back of the house to the most lovely garden setting. I was pleasantly surprised.
I ordered the ham quiche with soup. $17. Not overly expensive but not cheap. I was surprised to see the food arrive. The portion of quiche was small. I felt like I was getting ripped off. The soup was ok. But definitely not anything I’d ever want to taste again.
The waitress and host were wonderful people. But I don’t like laying well over $20 for a meal and leaving hungry.
I do see however that this place would be pleasing to those with a smaller appetite and a bent for health food.

Return visit wonderful - despite the rain. We visited Maja's garden 6 years ago and it was great. Appetizers, pork for main meal (vegan options available) and large piece of cake for desert. Live entertainment. Happens twice a week and ingredients are sourced from her and Guy's lovely garden. Large umbrellas protected us from weather.

This was a pleasant surprise in Mindemoya. The food was very delicious, and the ambiance in the garden was relaxing. Would certainly consider this as one of our best experiences on Manitoulin Island.

Maja and Guy were amazing hosts. We enjoyed the garden party this past Saturday. We contacted ahead and she was able to accommodate our dietary needs. The atmosphere in the garden was incredible. She explained the process involved in her recipes and the work involved in the garden. We can’t say enough.

Quite different and unexpected in a small town like Mindemoya. Different idea, very unique. Good food, friendly service, beautiful garden and backyard. Food is not everyday staples, different, freshly made and very tasty. All home made on the spot with a great twist, vegan mostly, which is not my cup of tea but Wild Garlic sausages did the trick for me.
Highly recommended. Places like this are needed everywhere.

My husband and I live in British Columbia. For many years we flew to Ontario to spend time at a cottage in McGregor Bay. Every year we drove to Mindemoya for our favorite attraction - Maja's Garden. The first time we found it accidentally and were lucky to meet and speak to Maja in person (it wasn't busy that time). We fell in love with this incredible place and the food; that reminded us our childhood when everything came straight from a garden. This was food that did not have any artificial additives and was simple and authentic. It was very sad to find a couple of poor reviews about this place. We feel sorry about people that don't understand the pleasure of authenticity and endless effort to keep it that way. We miss Maja's Garden and wish the owners a very good new season.

Came here on a cloudy day with some rain showers but we still enjoyed it. We ordered their Mushroom Quiche, soup of the day, and a pie for dessert. We loved sitting at the garden with views of the veggies and plants that they were growing. Such a nice place to relax as well and enjoy your surroundings. It was their last day for outdoor dining for the season and we are glad we were able to come here!

I don't know for sure, but it IS an outdoor venue so it could likely be closed for the season. Sorry I can't be of more definite help.

Hi Nancy, yes you can bring your dog on a short leash making sure that it will not interfere with other costumers. If you come from a long drive we suggest that you walk it prior to entering the garden as we grow food and want to be very carful to keep our garden safe.
