Who owns the other Earle house, a duplex that was probably built around the time of the Great War? It's a duplex and is featured on the Town of Fogo Island home page. It's a beautiful upper middle class home and was built as a duplex. It was called "Hillview", I believe. I'm not sure which Earle family lived in it. I question whether Bleak House was in use up to 1967 since when I lived in Hillview (the smaller duplex), Bleak House was used only by sheep. That 2nd Earle house, Hillview had hardwood floors, a lovely staircase that went to the 3rd floor, a kitchen with a tin ceiling, 3 ceramic fireplaces (one in the living room, front room; and one each in the 2 bedrooms on the 2nd floor). I was told by a Miller that these houses were built from kits. Certainly believable because the carpentry and wood finishing was excellent.

Our guide Kelsey gave us an exceptional tour of the Bleakhouse! So incredible to see and learn about this merchant house and the people and happenings. Incredibly furnished and restored and our #1 pic of the museums that we popped into. We spent more than 30 min as it was a slow day so she could afford that time with us. Very worthwhile checking out.

We made a 30 minute stop at this mercantile Museum home. It was a grand house in it days. Well decorated rooms. The tour guide is a pleasant local lady but she needs more training to give a more thorough tour.

the Bleak house was very interesting to see. the surprise of the tour was stumbling across the piano in the parlour...it was made by the Bell Piano company in Guelph Canada...how crazy was that. the tour guide was very good too.

Original or period furnishing were well displayed to give an idea of how the upper class lived at the end of the 19th century. Learned that the status of the people in each bedroom was determined by the # of steps up or down it took to get into the room.

My boyfriend and I traveled to Fogo Island due to his old family ties to the area. He is related to the Watermans who were related to the Slades. The house and museum were very interesting but on the tour we were mostly told about the Earls who inhabited the house after the Slades. Overall it was great to see how folks lived on the island back then and the house and furnishing are very cute and the views wonderful.

This was a beautifully restored house in a lovely setting and we really enjoyed the visit. However there was information posted on the walls about people I would have liked to have known more about, especially the two family members who nursed in the war years. However since the young girl who was ostensibly stewarding the house showed little interest in her visitors but spent all her time playing cards with friends, this didn't happen. Disappointing really.

This beautiful old home sure does portrait how the wealthy merchants of Fogo Island lived many years ago, it is obvious that there has been quiet a bit of time put into the preservation of this home. The tour guide was interesting. By viewing this home you can definitely see where the standard of living for the wealthy fish merchants was far more attainable then that of the common fisher person, this is sad but oh so true.

This beautiful old home provides a snapshot into how the well to do lived in outport NL in the late 1800s and into the mid 1900s. This house is well maintained and offers the visitor significant access and perspective. Must see in Fogo.
