Ao Nang can offer almost everything as a modern tourist town. A lot of shops, restaurants, travel agencies, tailors, ATM’s, tourist police and hotels/resorts/B&B’s.
A lot of Scandinavians go here to enjoy sun, sand and relaxation. Most of the travellers seem to be families and couples, and there are no visible prostitution.
With longtail and speed boats you can go to the nearby beaches and islands. The Ao Phranang (Ao Nang) Beach is quite OK, but in comparison with Phranang Beach (Princess Beach, rated top 10 in the world) it has not much to offer. The west side is for boats and the east for swimming.
Go here and explore the islands and region for a couple of days, and then go somewhere else.
Close by are Phi Phi islands, Phuket and Koh Lanta.

So much to do in and around Ao Nang beach.
- Make sure you don't stay too long, I stayed 2 weeks and it was a bit long.
- Don't take the massage for 200 Bhats for granted, it seems very cheap to us but they give it to Thais for 25 Bhats.
- Hire a moped and go in a 50 miles radius around Ao Nang to see the Waterfalls in the National Park. The jungle is very beautiful to see.
- Go up the hills at the back of the beach, there is a private beach which is worth the detour.
- There is a really nice evening buffet off the beach in a place near an Irish pub on the hill side of Ao Nang on the left hand side as you are walking up.
- There are bars outside the main area where you can buy a bottle of whisky for 8 quid, make sure you buy it outside the bar, at the entrance. I then saw a really good band that was playing some fantastic indie stuff. i think it's called Luna, but I'm not sure.
- Hire a kayak and go to Railay for the day but make sure the sea is safe, cause otherwise the currents will crush you on the rocks.
- If you do hire a kayak, make sure you cover all your belongings in a closed plastic bag, cause you will be splashed with water.
- Do eat the food from the stall, I came back to London with a bug, but I got rid of it using Yakult and other Holland and Barrett products.
- Be careful with the way the Thais drive, it can be dangerous to a westerner, especially on the main road that goes to Krabi.
- Do spend maybe a day but no more in Krabi town, it's a little boring.
- If your thing is to go to go-go bars, there is one next to Peace Laguna and one area through the shops on the beach, where the tailors are.
- If you withdraw cash from an ATM, make sure you inform your bank you are in Thailand before you go, otherwise a computer recorded message will call you to tell you you are the victim of fraud.

Just read that Ao Nang is quiet? Not at the height of the season its not? Ao Nang is about to explode. There are numerous bars, restaurants, shops etc, to keep you amused for weeks on end, its not a quiet hideaway ! (pity) the daily commute to neighbouring beaches, Railey, Pra Nang are fantastic and worth every bhatt. The beach itself in Ao Nang is okay if you keep away from the central part where the "traffic to the boats" is herded continually all day. We found a fab bbq "all you can eat" place, its not everyones cup of tea but great value if on a budget. My only complaint is that the locals werent up for much of a barter.. nothing like Pat Pong in Bangkok! so, just be prepared to pay the price they ask as it wont vary much......trust me. All in all, Ao Nang is a great taste of noise before you hit bangkok.....or a subtle way to calm down on the way to an island retreat...... enjoy.

While in Ao Nang in October 2012, I used motorcycle tuk-tuk number 075. It is painted on the back at the top. The driver (late 20's I would say) spoke some English and agreed on 60 baht for my fare outside of town. In the middle of the day, broad daylight, he pulled over and demanded "give me 200 baht or you walk". I calmly tried to negotiate with him (I'm local here 3 years) and he immediately attacked me for not paying. He stopped and fled with the tuk-tuk when some locals happened by and were ready to help. Police report did nothing. All they offered to do was find him and bring him to the station so I "could talk to him". No assault or attempted robbery charges, no follow up, etc. I had the number of the tuk-tuk and his sunglasses with finger prints all over them. They magically disappeared at the police station. This type of thing is not uncommon in Thailand so avoid riding alone and take a photo of any vehicle you get into. Keep in mind that these are all controlled by local mobsters and the scenario is a no-win for you. If you pay him, he continues to scam people. If you fight him and win, HE will report YOU to the police and YOU will go to jail. Ironic, huh? In my case, no investigation or jail time for him. Luckily, he got nothing and I escaped with minor bruises, some cuts and a few sprained muscles. This is my 5th time to Ao Nang and I always rent motorcycles. This was a firm reminder why.

Ao Nang is not quiet. do not come here expecting calm and bliss, with a few tasteful, chilled out bars.
We had a great time in Ao Nang, but it was a culture shock having been in more Thai areas. Walk to the quiet end of the beach, Nattaharat Bay or Railay (best of all) if you want a vague sense of peace. If you want all the shops, tours and vivid nightlife then Ao Nang is your place. Great for families, and tour groups, maybe a little intense for those looking for a break from the bustle and adventure of Bangkok.

Ao nang is awash with tour agents touting every type of trip you can imagine.
We decided on a day trip on a speed boat to include Phi Phi along with Maya Bay (from 'The Beach').
firstly if you decide to do a tour shop around for the best price we managed to get our tour half price to those advertised.
The main aim was to see Phi Phi and decide if we would want to stay there in future, the other parts of the tour would be a bonus.
Overall we were really disappointed with the trip. the tour company is trying their best to pad out the day and fill the hours. First stop Maya Bay. The idillic place was a horror to visit and we sat in disbelief on the beach as some 30 or so boats filled the bay to the point that their remained almost no space to swim. The beach was a mass of people and the air filled with fumes. This place shows how bad thai tourism can be allowed to get.
We then went around the island for snorkelling, again along with more than 20 other boats. The place was chaos and it's amazing that no one is being hurt as boats move around people swimming. The tourists are encouraged to throw food, mostly bread into the sea to attract the dwindling numbers of fish where once there was marine life.
Next a quick stop by a large cave and then on to Phi Phi. Here you are ushered into a large building for a grim buffet lunch in a room with a bad smell and no view. So basically you get one hour on Phi Phi where yo are unable to see Phi Phi!
Then away again, this time to see monkeys on a beach on Phi Phi where tourists ply them with copious amounts of food.
Next we speed across the bay to find our first spot of the day where there are only about five boats. We stop for snorkelling again. Whilst this time there are more fish it's evident that the coral is seriously ill.
On to our final destination, Bamboo island the remote tropical paradise well it was yes again had it not been for the hundreds of tourist. A fellow passenger commented that it was at lot busier than four years ago. I wondered if when I return in ten years from now will I be saying gosh when I came in 2011 there cannot have been for than two hundred on the island back then!
We headed back to Ao Nang and the relief to be back at base. Possibly one of the worst day trips we have done in many a year. Thankfully a fantastic group of people on our boat from Germany and The Netherlands made the day more enjoyable and took our minds of the worst bits.

I visited Krabi - Ao nang from 8/6 to 12/6. It was not a good period to go as it was raining almost every day. But thank God it rain in the late afternoon or evening so by then we were back from our tour.
At the airport, you can easily get a cab or van to the area that you are staying. If the driver is good, they are willing to come back to pick u up on the day you depart Krabi. The initial cost the person quote was 600baht so must bargain and they quoted 400Baht to take a cab from Airport to Aonang Beach for 2-4person. It takes approximately 30mins to arrive Aonang Beach.
There are a whole stretch of Tour agency at Aonang area. I took a bit of time to check out a few agencies price before deciding on it. In the end I booked all my tours with the same agency, can bargain more.
There are so many different islands to visit and the taxi driver recommend Hong island. We chose 4 island tour but it was a mistake as I thought Hong island is included. It was a bad choice afterall. Nice scenery. I love the 2 islands that are so near each other and you can just walk over when the sea is shallow. However because the water is so shallow, during snorkeling a few tourists got stunk by sea urchin. The tour we booked cost 380Baht by Longtail boat. There are another option which is to take speedboat which is less bumpy and faster.
The rental of motorbike is really cheap 150baht-180baht for 24hours. No need license. So we rode up to Krabi Town. We save about 300-400baht on booking the city tour or taking a cab to Krabi Town. Talking about Krabi town, there's Vogue department stall which is really small. I like the Walking street which is just beside Vogue. There lots of traditional Thai food and some clothing.
We also went to ATV ride, Elephant riding, Tiger Cave, fish farm that cost around 2100baht. Something that I learnt, the package that I booked from the agency varies from the actual tour. I think the tour guide tried to save some money by bringing us to lesser place. So must be firm & insist on it.
Do purchase your groceries such as snack, drinks, bread & etc at 7-11 which are 2 to 3 times cheaper as compare to their local mini mart.
Massage are every where, pricing is more or less the same. Approximately 200baht for a traditional thai massage. We visited Prime massage, just beside full moon bar. We like the pressure and the style of the massage so we went back every night. Till the boss know us and gave us better price. Knowing that it would be my last, she gave me a cream for my stiff shoulder.
If you are keen on drinking, I recommend this place at Center Point. That place has different small bars to chill. Out of so many bars, I love this cow boy style bar call long horn saloon. It is very happening and has the most crowds. They have very good band.
I stayed in two place-
The Small Hotel Krabi: the staff are friendly and helpful. Nice outdoor jacuzzi in every pool access room. However the breakfast get cold easily as they shut off the heater after 830am. The pool is a bit small.
The Red Ginger Chic Resort: The room is really huge and with nice display. The balcony to the pool is spacious. The pool is really nice and has a pool bar. In the cupboard, they've Pinic Bag & Mats which I thought was quite a good idea to bring out to the beach. The staff are very professional and friendly. However the TV takes 20mins to warm up and function properly & The staff said it's normal. Cannot throw toilet paper in the toliet bowl, have to throw in the waste bin. No smoking within the hotel.
Have fun & remember to bargain!!

Visited in 2012 and loved the laid back vibe and small town feel of Ao Nang so I was a little taken aback to see how much things have changed since. Sure some developments were good but the charm of the Ao Nang I knew was no longer felt. Guest houses and small hotels were overtaken by larger establishments and street food were almost non-existent. They used to line the streets every evening and the buzz was just electric. Island tours now come with a 300-400 baht National Park fees but I don't feel whatsoever where these fees have gone to. 7-elevens and Family Marts are sprouted every 200m when all the mum and pop stores have almost disappeared. Massage parlours are also everywhere, as if challenging the 7-elevens for first place in a game of monopoly. Do Thais have nothing better to offer than touting a cheap Thai massage?
I missed the old Ao Nang when it has so much more character and felt more local. Now it is quite commercialised and felt almost like a mini copy of Patong, saved only by the glorious sight of limestone mountains flanking the one main road that leads to the beach, keeping it in check. I cannot imagine what will happen if there were more roads and spaces for developers to play with without thoughtful planning. Did I also forget to mention that there are now two McDonald's in Ao Nang? I may not want to step into McDonald's once not lest twice.
The charming Ao Nang I once knew was gone but at least I could still take a longtail boat to Railay for a reasonable fare, taste good Thai food from The Massaman and Aonang Boat Noodles, who were here a long time, as well as getting a nice massage at Aonang Haven whom I had the privilege of lodging at on the last trip. They are still the best place for a massage I felt despite so many others around. They used to have rooms for rent too but have since restructured to focus mainly on their massages. The changes to Ao Nang have influenced and affected their business model I heard and have so observed.
First time travellers shouldn't be as concerned as me because Ao Nang is still a very decent place to visit and is a very good base for exploring beautiful Krabi. One good thing about development is convenience, and as such the many 7-elevens. ;)

Hi so my boyfriend and I are taking a trip to Bangkok and already booked another flight to land in krabi for two days. So we want to see the limestone rock and beautiful beaches (scenery from music video I got U - Duke Dumont ).
We also want to do scuba diving, canoeing, elephant trekking, + anything else that is recommended? within these two days
So after some research, I am looking into staying at Ao Nang to be close to Phra Nang and then take a boat to Hong Island, and another boat (the second day) to Phang Nga Bay.
How does that itinerary sound? Which area would be better to stay in if Ao nang is not the best choice? Which islands are better or worse? Is that reasonable to do in 2 days ?
Any information or feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

Your IT is great but you cannot get it all done in 2 days. Ao Nang is close to everything. Fantastic beaches and good snorkeling but these areas are very crowded with tourists until
sometime after April. Forget the elephant trekking in Krabi....
there are many better places in Thailand for that and tiger viewing. You need at least 5-6 days to accomplish your list of desires. Have a GREAT time!!

Many people are confusing Ao Phra Nang to Ao Nang. They're 2 different beaches. Ao Nang is the strip of beach where tuk tuks n motorbikes are running crazy, like a mini Patong in Phuket.
Phra Nang is a small protected cove in the South of Railay peninsula, about 20 min long tail boat ride from Ao Nang or 40 min from Krabi town.
Having said that, I haven't been to Railay or Phra Nang since Dec 1998, before hoards of tourist day trippers spoilt the place, but still doubt there's tuk tuks n motorbikes zooming around.
Written April 1, 2015
Ao Phra Nang is Ao Nang as a whole. The beach on Railay is Phra Nang Cave Beach.
