I stopped in Villavieja mainly to break up the long bus ride from San Agustin to Bogota. Villavieja is a typical one-horse town with few options for eating etc but the locals are very helpful. One thing to note is that there are very limited transport options back to Neiva from the desert on a Sunday - waited ages with... More

We were brought by two motorbikes to different trails along the road from Villavieja to the dessert. The trail at the campsite (Cusco?!) was amazing. The colours (red) of the landscape are amazing, the cactuses make the picture perfect. Although the "grey" part further on the road is less intense, the views are still incredible. The furthest stop we made... More

This is an interesting place to visit. You can walk amongst the dunes and see the erosion. It is easy to get to from Villavieja. Just get a tuk tuk.

It was a short visit but so worth it. The scenery are beautiful and something I have never seen before. definitely worth it. There are plenty of accommodation in the desert and you can rent bikes, do horse riding, hiking, and there are some swimming pools around where you can refresh from the heat for a little price. Definitely worth... More

Definitely worth a visit while traveling through colombia. We took a motortaxi with a guide (Elver) who could tell us a lot about the region and the plants. I would recommend taking a guide because it's incredibly hot and easy to get lost. And bring a hat and lots of sunscreen!

Beautifull area close to Bogota. Tatacoa is not to be missed on your trip through Colombia. We stayed in Villavieja and went from there on in the morning to the desert. We decided to do the tour with Juan because we've read a lot of positive things about him (the hotels will now him and can call him to arrange... More

El Chopo provided my daughter and I a private 2 day tour of la Tatacoa where he picked us up from the airport and took us to El Rincon de la Cabrita, a quaint little accommodation in Villavieja. On the first day it rained all morning, so once it lightened up, el Chopo took us horseback riding through the desert... More

We visited with our kids, 4 and 2, and they loved it. We walked most trails away from the crowds. At Villavieja you can find a tour guide if you want but we went on our own with a GPS and were fine. The pools are crowded and not very clean so I recommend to skip them.

I would like to highly recommend our tour guide Juan Manuel Ramirez ("Juan Tatacoa"). We met him at our hotel Villa Paraiso. He has a motorbike-tuk-tuk vehicle for 2 people. Our tour started at 2.30 pm and finished around 10 pm. We had 4 stops altogether in the red and grey desert. Juan was very enthusiastic and proud to show... More
