A Very Special Cruise
Feb. 2020
We recently returned from a small ship 11 day cruise on the Sea of Cortez. It was an inaugural season for the classic ship, Astoria. Embarkation was in Puerto Penasco, known locally as Rocky Point. There were 7 other ports of call..Topolobampo, near Los Mochis, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Loreto, Santa Rosalia and Guaymas with disembarkation at Puerto Penasco. We enjoyed spectacular views of the mountains and islands in the Sea of Corez and were treated to many whale sightings. The sea was calm and the colors of the sea changed often from dark blue to green and turquoise. The ship was warmly greeted in all of the ports. We were met by Mariachi bands and entertained by young singers and dancers in beautiful Mexican dress. The Sea of Cortez is a truly beautiful place with natural wonders, wildlife and culture.

Just returned from a FABULOUS expedition with Lindblad! "Among the Great Whales" on the Venture ship! There aren't enough superlatives to describe the experience! Aside from the beauty of Baja, the professionalism of Lindblad, and the wildlife and whale sightings .............what made this cruise exceptional was the crew! Captain Cook, thank you for the great conversations on the bridge and for your enthusiasm every time we spotted wildlife! I know you found those blue whales just for me! :-) John & Stella, our expedition leaders, are the team to beat! They were so kind and welcoming and excited to make sure you have the trip of your life! John, we will miss your soft voice, signing off in the evenings. We'd always drift off to sleep with memories of magical moments from each day!! Stella, your smile can brighten up the darkest room. What a pleasure to get to spend time with you! :-) In addition, the naturalist staff was outstanding!! Jeff, how can I ever thank you for those "money shots" of spy hopping and breaching!! Your help in capturing those moments was priceless and appreciated more than I can say!! (Especially since I forgot to pack my cameras! Yikes!!) I'll miss our fun chats! :-) Sarah, thank you for your understanding and help in creating memories we'll treasure forever! And Sofia . . . can we try to bottle your enthusiasm and sell it? We'd make a fortune! :-) Spending time with you on the bridge and the bow, spotting one whale after another, are moments we'll remember forever. It was like the whales had direct dial in access to you! :-) Lauren, your sweet nature and kind assistance with all the photo questions, was impressive to say the least. You never met a question with anything but sweet concern for your passengers needs. And Kayvon, thank you for all those great moments on the bridge as well. You are a very special young man, with a gift for making people feel like family once you meet them. All of you, please, collectively, take a bow for creating a stupendous experience for all those guests who were LUCKY enough to sail with you all!!! Everyone out there who is looking for an overall, fun, exciting wildlife experience, you will not go wrong with the Lindblad Among the Great Whales expedition on the Venture. Everything was joyful from the very first day to the last. The cabin is so comfortable (thank you Victoria & Peter for your level of care!) No matter which one you choose (we checked them all out), you will have a comfortable environment. The shower was one of the best I ever had on a ship, hands down! The food was delicious at every meal. (Bryant, the best eggs we ever had!!! We are so fussy about our eggs but you nailed it every time! :-) No request or desire was unfulfilled. Laura, you and your team (Hi Patrick! We miss you!) were so outstanding each and every day, it was amazing to witness! The genuine ability to meet everyone's needs, was a near impossible feat that you succeeded at each day and with a smile to boot!! A million thanks for all the efforts you and your waitstaff team went to to satisfy any and all requests. Bravo!!! The itinerary and the ability to change that itinerary depending on sightings, was exactly why you choose Lindblad! Going snorkeling and 3 Blue whales show up? We stay with the whales! Heading north and humpbacks start breaching south? We turn the ship around! It was stupendous on every level and this small review will never be able to really encapsulate the magnificent experience we just had. Please, run, do not walk, to make a reservation to set sail in Baja, California, among the great whales and great CREW aboard the Venture!!! Happy sailing!!! :-)

A hidden gem
Jan. 2020
This is a fascinating place on which I spent a week on a small boat. One has to remember that wildlife documentaries take many months to produce and that in one week one will not see everything. First of all the geology is incredible and the islands and coastal areas hold desert plants and endemic creatures found nowhere else. I was lucky it had rained which is rare in this area. The desert was green and in bloom. The disturbing element are the omnipresent goats which are decimating certain parts so much so that they have been removed from some islands but not before all the vegetation had disappeared. Some of the cactuses (cardón) take decades to grow..... The Mexican government should do something about protecting the flora and fauna of these parts. Having talked with some of the older fishermen it transpired that the area had been so over-fished in the past that it now only had half the sea life it had had twenty years ago. To me it seemed plentiful as the fish were colourful and omnipresent. I saw mobula rays, three types of dolphin ..... sea lions in a vast colony. The schools of dolphin were incredible as they would suddenly appear in huge numbers and the sea would be alive with them for a bit and then they would just vanish..... and the sea would be flat calm again. On that note weather conditions did change rapidly and then the boat had to make for shelter...

Desert beach - great shrimp
Oct. 2019 • Couples
We routinely drive the 60 mikevUhs from an tiny and easy border crossing at Lukeville Arizona to Playa Bonita RV resort or one of the high rise resorts.

The beach is excellent for walking, running and playing sea side particularly during low tide cycles.

Puerto Penasco is a shrimping port so the fresh shrimp meals are outstanding whether you dine at local venues or cook your own.

This is a must! The Sea of Cortes was such an awesome experience and the water is beautiful!! The staff was great! You have to wear their sunscreen so I recommend applying your own before you go because their stuff doesn’t work as good. We had a great time!!

Sailing and camper Van holiday La Paz
Feb. 2019
We have just returned from an awesome 2 week sailing and camper van holiday with Mike Madlock and his team could not have been more helpful. We had a fantastic 5 nights onboard the Catalina 30. The kids loved it! Sailed to Espirtu Santos Nature reserve and saw humpback whales, sea lion colonies, diving pelicans, rays jumping and stunning beaches. Then we rented Mikes camper van for 3 nights. There are some great campsites in the mountains and at the beaches. Thanks again to Mike and team we will be back!

Semi-desert Paradise

What's not to love about Cabo. First, I went the 1st week of Oct. and the weather was fantastic, mid-80's no rain hot but not unpleasant and no humidity (not like East coast). I was taken about by the mountains everywhere, locks of rocks and cactus and then the fabulous views of the ocean. Sea of Cortez was warm to swim in and not rough at all. But the Pacific side, be really forewarned NOT for swimming. More for expert boarders (IMHO), not for children really either. As soon as you land, be aware that there are people hounding you for timeshare presentations. Just keep walking and do yourself a favor and have transportation preplanned. Once you make it out of the airport, you're not going to be scott free re: timeshares. It's what the locals live off and tourism so just be kind and keep that in mind even though they are annoying. Hopefully you stay at an all inclusive resort and you don't have to leave. It is safe to do so but I didn't really like venturing out at night. (I felt watched.)

Encounters with whales - including two adult blues and a calf, seabirds, sea lions, dolphins. strolling on uninhabited desert islands with only bird song for accompaniment. Beach combing - looking at the variety of shells. Cacti in flower oh and woodpeckers exploring them for grubs. Rattleless rattlesnakes prove to be elusive but lizards scuttle about, proving interest for the resident ravens. Osprey nests and blue footed boobies and yellow footed gulls. Sea lions draped over every rock they can find like self-satisfied cats. Don't wait, just go!
