Narrow suffocating atmosphere made me want to escape this place quickly. Every booth had at least one salesperson reaching out, beckoning. It reminded me of a zombie movie. I felt like prey. The narrow aisle made it at times difficult to move. I was near panic.

I am a frequent traveler to Guadalajara, and I visit San Juan de Dios on every trip. It is crowded and busy, but I always enjoy my experience. The prices are fine, but they are often inflated for tourists. We have also had good luck at eating at some of the foodstalls. I consider it a must do in Guadalajara.

The market is humongous… my kids found loads of stuff. The food is delicious, but beware if your not use to the local food. For nicknacks it’s awesome… to take back for gifts. I love love coming here… my family has been coming here for years!

Overwhelming and very large but worth an hour or two. In addition to produce and vegitables and of course meats, there is clothing, shoes, sombreros and even shopping bags to carry things in. Typical of every mercado in a Mexican town no matter how large or small. Color, color, smells and visiual stimulation, I love it!

We had lunch at the mercado Martha’s to be specific, to avoid the restaurant prices and because they saw that we were foreigners they charges us twice what it should have been! The food left so much to be desired and we didn’t even enjoy the Mercado because of the service and food that left a sour taste in our mouths! BE CAREFUL where you eat if you eat here and make sure you ask for prices if they don’t have menus!!!!’

This place is not just a huge outlet for Chinese products. there is all kinds of goods, cheap throw aways to great never seen before novelties. However the better part is the food. Yes, the Mexican taste is live and in fine shape in this Municipal Market. Do go to re known Carmelo's for birria tacos, to Chilos for huge pork tortas. or the amazing array of sea food stands and totally authentic Mexican fare. I'm a fan. Its safe and real busy, take comfy shoes!

You can easily become overwhelmed here. It’s huge! But you’ll find anything you need. Prices are very reasonable. Most venders will negotiate prices and they normally will work with you. One did upset me because I purchased a dress for my daughter and the sample one had a silk belt but when they put the dress in a bag, they gave me a cheap cotton belt. After I went back to call them on it, they said the silk one was extra. I was very upset and let them know. So be careful what gets put in the bag. The place I purchased the dress was called Jimmy’s (on the far end of the Mercado). Overall though it’s a great place where you’ll find anything. (Careful not to leave valuables in site if you drive there. A few years ago my suitcase was stolen from my rental car when I stopped to shop before flying out.)

Usually when I'm being a tourist in some City in Mexico I like to eat in the "Mercados" usually food is really good, however in this case, I ate twice there and I didn't like the food, I mean this is not that bad but I was expecting better. For shopping this is a very big swap meet with a lot of stores, I believe this is ok for shopping.

I actually enjoyed shopping here. Found some really nice deals on leather shoes and bags, enjoyed the atmosphere especially in the courtyard with the beautiful parrot and fruit stands. Despite other reviews, I did not find this market crowded at all, it was very reasonable (I went with my 3-year-old in a pram and sometimes running around and di dnot have problems). It was clean (yet things a bit dusty but that you cant avoid), relatively well organised, after spending a little time it was not so hard to find what I wanted. Noone tried to cheat or rob me and did not feel such an atmosphere at all. Police was there all the time. I think there are not so many counterfeits or fake things - the police is also always present, and if the branded things are fake, they are extremely expensive fakes... Leantherware is very nice quality and well priced. Very honest and kind merchants who did not push but help. Mind you bargaining is not to the extent you do in other countries' markets (such as Turkey, Vietnam, etc), you can be happy if you get a little discount. There is a lot of good food, too.

to make sure - there are two entries in Tripadvisor for the same thing; this and San Juan de Dios mercado. These are the same.
