Nothing special. To me it wasn't worth the time what I spended.
Never ever go to this monument by local bus!!
It takes about 2 hours to get to Cristo bay,and one hour to get back to Guanajuato. The price is 21 mxn each way.Of course is very "local experience",but takes a lot of time. The "camion" stays one hour at the monument, during is absolutely nothing to do in this place, then moves back to Guanajuato.
The driver was amazing, asked s lots of questionssnd forced me to learn Spanish:) Great experience:)
The view is beautiful, but really nothing special.
I not recommended to visit except you have a loooots of time or living local and have a time to spend.
The organised trip from Guanajuato centr to Cristo bay costs 150 mxn and promis to take 3 hours. It can be the best solution.

We hired a taxi to drive us to Cristo Rey. The drive up was 1 hour from El Centro de Guanajuato. Winding and beautiful we finally arrived at Cristo Rey. We went on a Sunday and the place was packed. We ended up walking to the actual monument and even though it's a slight incline, it was easily doable. The monument itself is extremely impressive and beautiful. Mass was just finishing and we were able to go into the church and take a ton of pictures. Standing underneath the Christ monument was breathtaking and meaningful. Lots of places to get snacks and souvenirs too. I highly recommend taking the time to see this magnificent attraction.

Felt like we wasted a day here. The road is terrible and takes almost 2hrs from Guanajuato. Spent a few minutes and that was enough. I’m a retired Catholic, so the religious aspect wasn’t there. The view was OK, nothing spectacular to see other than the statue. If you’re a standard tourist the pictures are good enough.

Driving thru Guanajuato we saw a Monestery perched on a hill about 30 minutes from our hotel. Up around 2800 meters. Drove up. Pretty church, easy drive and the statue well worth the trip

well i have been to cristo rey and it is a pretty place you can go visit with the family. It actually takes like an hour to get there..
When your going up to go to the monument you see caves with people who actually live there.. I suggest you to go visit it with your family it will actually make you feel good.

I have been to 'Cristo Rey' several times. I enjoy the peace the place brings to those people visiting, wheather locals or people from other countries.Anumber of images can be located at the Webshots site. Some are under the title 'Monumento a Cristo Rey' while others are under 'El Cubilete' and still other usless titles. Good luck on your searches. The images are there, you need to use an open mind when searching for them.

This monument is one of the most beautiful of Mexico City. The first time I visited Cristo Rey was 1986, since then I have been there a few times. I was just there December 2002 and as time goes by is more fascinating. From what I know Cristo Rey is going under construction and I believe every year that goes by it gets more and more popular as time goes by. If all goes well for my family and my self we are planing to go back to Cristo Rye on December 2003. If anyone would like to share info or opinions about Cristo Rey with my self E-mail me at mrwulverin@aol.com

Before attempting your assent to the top, make sure your car has good breaks and that your radiator works and that it has plenty of anti-freeze in it to prevent over heating. It will take about an hour to reach the top, depending on that day's traffic. On the way up (or down) don't be alarmed if you see locals selling food, drinks, or trinkets. How they got up there I have no idea, but I'm glad they were there as we did have to stop once and let the truck we rented cool down as the heat gauge was reaching dangerous levels.
Once at the top you'll get a breathtaking view of the surrounding haciendas and villages below, and if you know which way to look you an see the capital city of Guanajuato off in the distance. At the very top is a museum and church with an 11 story statue of Christ the King (Cristo Rey) with his outstretched arms looking out over the people of Mexico.. It looks a lot like the one you see over Rio de Janiero in Brazil. I wondered why they picked this desolate spot in the middle of nowhere to put this monument and I discovered there was a very good reason for it. As it turns out, this spot marks the very center of Mexico. It is both halfway between the east and west coasts of Mexico as well as the halfway point between the north and south borders of Mexico. Pope Pius X! dedicated the original statue back in 1923, but it was destroyed 3 years later in 1926 and had to be rebuilt. There is no charge to visit this site but they do accept offerings for its upkeep if you care to contribute. If you don't trust your car or driving skill to make the journey to the top they have taxis that will take you there, but then what fun would that be!

I've seen a few of these monuments in other Latin countries, so it may not have been as exciting to me to see it, but if you're going to Valenciana anyway, it's not that much farther. Here are my thoughts:
PROs:
-If you've never seen a giant Cristo monument before, GO. It's cool. It's simply gigantic.
-It's an easy bus ride from Valenciana.
* See transportation advice below*
-The city bus continues to the top, bypassing all the stairs the tours seem to make people climb. Maybe to build suspense...? Or make the tour last longer...? I really don't know, but I was able to tour the site in peace before they all climbed the stairs and took over.
-There are many food stands at the foot of the stairs, albeit much more expensive than those in front of the temple, or back in Guanajuato.
- The bus waits at the top 1 hr. Get back on it. After that, the next bus is 2-3 hrs later.
- Visit the temple and mine(s) after you come back from Cristo Rey. The bus drops you back off in front of the temple (although it stopped earlier for me so I could visit one of the mines first, which was on the way ~ 500 meters from the temple and mine at the temple. (There are 3 mines in the area).
CONs:
-Other than the ginormous Jesus statue, there really isn't much to see. You can take a few pics of the green trees below, but that's about it.
- Unless this is a significant religious experience for you, you may want to consider whether you want to spend half a day to go here.
-By noon, huge groups arrive and they are loud. Shouting and cheering to whatever the guides were saying on bullhorns. Get there before 11!
I had 5 days in Guanajuato and saw most of it in 3. But I'm hard core. Most people don't move at my pace. (Which is why I often travel alone. I wait for no man!) Because I had a lot of time, I thought it was worth it to spend a half day in Valenciana and the Cristo. I left at about 7:30am and returned around...3 pm. Still had time to walk around the castle (now a hotel), and ended up at the Nopal Mine.
Hope that helps! Enjoy Guanajuato!
*Transportation suggestions*
-If you are traveling alone, in a small group, or with very mobile children, I strongly suggest you take the local buses. Cheap, easy, reliable, frequent. (Otherwise, you can buy an arranged tour in the plaza de los Angeles near Callejon del Beso. I don't know how much they are because I avoid tours like the plague).
-If you are staying in the main central zone (near Plaza de La Paz), you first get to the main bus center. It is about 2 blocks from the police station.
1. Walk ~ 10 min,
2. Take a cab for 40-50 pesos
3. Or take the city bus-for 5 pesos - Centro/ Milfa/Momias bus. Tell the driver you're headed to Valenciana and he will tell you to get off at Angel Plaza, which is a little closer and less confusing than CENTRO because there are fewer buses passing through. (CENTRO is extremely busy)
THEN, from there, you catch a regional bus to Valenciana. They pass by about every hour. It is also only 5 pesos (each way) to ride to Valenciana (1 hour), and the bus drops you off in front of the Valenciana Temple.
THEN take ONE MORE BUS to Cristo Rey. It takes about 1 hour on a jouncy, curvy, mostly cobblestone road. Cost is 19 pesos, one way.
*Buses come by every 1-2 hours. If you missed it, visit the temple in the meantime. I took the 10:15-10:30am bus to Cristo Rey, 19p. I advise going early as the tour crowds begin to inundate the site around 11-12 noon.
*This bus waits at the top for one hour, then returns. That's about the amount of time you need. Get back on it to avoid waiting another hour or two for the next bus with hoards of people coming in waves.
-Then catch the city/regional bus back to Centro from the street across from the temple. Be sure to ask the driver, as many other buses pass by.
*City/regional buses are smaller, 2nd class, no restrooms on board. Usually no AC (not really needed in GTO), although sometimes the longer routes have buses with AC.

I have gone to Cristo Rey twice, once by car, once..WALKING! It took 2 and a half hours but was well worth it. I recommend walking if you want to get in touch with your spiritual side. I'm only 14 and I made it up there. It was fun.

We visited your beautiful church on September 25th, 2017.
In your museum room I noticed a little white and black dog licking his or her leg and was laying next to the status of the big dog, I think for protection and comfort that little dog came to your church to be protected by Jesús.
After we left I wanted to get some food and water for the poor little dog only to hear from someone that the dog can’t move as he has a broken leg.
I have tried calling and have left 6 messages for your office and my girlfriend even spoke to someone at your church but was given a disconnected number that doesn’t work.
I am willing pay to rescue that dog if you are willing to take him to the vet (doctor) to fix his leg. It was so powerful to see a little dog coming for help to Jesús.
I will pay for this dogs surgery, food and water for as long as someone adopts him.
Please call me back at 619.572.7700. This animal is in severe pain. I was helpless and didn’t know what to do,
Please let us save this poor dog. He feels pain. We can help.
Sincerely,
Ramon Pourtrymour

Sorry, wish I knew how to help however, like you I was a visitor and have no connections either there or in Guanajuato.

Take a Taxi. It is a long walk and very steep. Taxies in Guanajuato are not expensive and decent.

Does anyone know how many stairs there were to climb? I huffed and puffed and didn't count them? Have tried to find the answer with no luck.
Thanks.

Buenas tardes:
