I was expecting to see a beautifully decorated 18th century baroque mansion, but of the old Iturbide palace, only the columns and door frames remain. It now hosts an exhibit on the architectural transformation of cities, and another of clay figurines and pottery. Unless you’re interested in the exhibits, this is skippable, but it’s free. (Also, it's not known by this name on Google maps, they call it Palacio de Cultura Citibanamex.)

We saw hundreds of G. Iturbide's photos at this museum. It must be dedicated to her work. A lot of the photos were kind of edgy and she certainly has a passion for photographing pre-Hispanic peoples. The building itself is very impressive and the photos are arranged in a sequence by them so it's easy not to miss anything. If you're at all into photography, especially of people I think you'll find this worthwhile

The nativity scene display is a must see for anyone interested in the folk art of of Mexico. The subject matter may not be a draw for everyone, but it is almost beside the point- rather it offers a vehicle to see the incredible range of materials, style and interpretation of a subject of great importance and meaning in Mexico. Wood, pottery, tin, agate, corn husks and fabric- and a lot more; miniatures to life size; simple to incredibly ornate and detailed. Fabulous.

The Palacio de Iturbide is owned by Banamex and has outstanding art exhibitions throughout the year. Admission is free and the Palacio is located just up the street from Sanborn's House of Tiles when heading toward the Zocalo. I live in Oaxaca, Mexico, and frequently visit Mexico City. The Palacio is always on my list to visit while in town and I have never been disappointed. There is a book and art shop in the Palacio that is small but very good. On a recent trip to Buenos Aires we visited a top museum there and the exhibit on loan from Banamex was the highlight of the visit. Their collection of Mexican art is huge and first class. Don't miss it! Photography is not allowed.

Built for colonial nobility, it now houses a wide variety of exquisite works of art and it’s free. There are lots of different crafts, pottery, leather, fabric, sculpture and there should be something here for everyone.
