An impressive and beautiful church -- well worth the time

Whatever your religion (or lack thereof), spending a few minutes in a pew at this magnificent church is a positive experience.

Hearing that this was the most decorated church in Mexico my expectations were high... and not high enough! The meticulous details overlayed in gold puts this on par for the nicest cathedrals in Europe.

This is the plaza where wedding celebrations take place, just outside the church, all weekend. There are bands, traditional dancers and happy people. Lots of fun to watch

The photograph that appears at the beggining of this site is NOT that of San Felipe Nri, but rather the frot of the church of Santo Domingo, both in downtown Oaxaca. Whereas Santo Domingo is a huge landmark becae of its historical and aesthetic merits, San Felipe Neri is a more normal church where locals go to mass and for... More

We saw three weddings here on Saturday. The interior is classic and I thought the best church in Oaxaca. It is right on the pedestrian street.

This is the wrong church in the accompanying photo. This is Santo Domingo. All churches throughout Oaxaca are fascinating as represent as there is a measure of syncretism between indigenous religion and Catholicism represented one way or another in all. Santo Domingo, however, as in this picture is amazing and the height of Mexican baroque style architecture. Felipe Neri is... More

This is a smaller church than the Santo Domingo de Guzman depicted in the cover of this attraction on TA. The church itself lies west of the cathedral and is baroque in style. Apparently, Benito Juarez got married here.

Went into this seemingly trivial looking cathedral to be astounded by the elaborate and intricate detailing. Well worth a look inside.

If you are in Oaxaca, and if you liked the fabulous Santo Domingo church, you must also visit this less known church. It is as rich as Santo Domingo, may be more. Sculpted altars and decorations are everywhere. The church is in Calle Independencia, only three blocks from the Zócalo, going west.
