Mexico certainly has an array of fantastic architectural ancient site, and Monte Alban is one of them. Lots of space to walk around. We had a guide which helped us understand the history of the place. The museum is quite worth a visit.

Beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site that is absolutely worth a couple of hours at minimum. We went early as it is on the way to the airport and had plenty of time to walk around the grounds and get an understanding of the history. Climb...More

We hired a guide at the ruins ($500 pesos for 4 people). He gave the history and background information that you don't get if you are just reading the signs (which are signed in English, Spanish and Zapotec). Huge ruins, well restored, good museum.

Monte Albán, site of ruins of an ancient centre of Zapotec and Mixtec culture, located in what is now Oaxaca state. Visited there fairly early one morning hardly any one there. Bought a few authentic reproduction pre-Columbian artifacts and some souvenir jewelry. Bring some pesos...More

Must see when visiting Oaxaca! This is a world heritage site and it truly reflects an amazing aspect of ancient Mexican culture and history as a species. Monte Alban was a religious, astronomical and political center and home to a thriving civilization long before Christ...More

Another Mexican ruin but each has been different. On this trip we've seen ruins from our hotels in Tulum, Valladolid and Merida. A good, understandable guide can really enhance one's experience. The two tours we took in Oaxaca were thru El Covento de Oaxaca and...More

This was our second trip and it was so much better with Pablo our fabulous guide. No canned spiel that anyone can read out of a guide book but real and thoughtful commentary.

Fabulous place to wander around but watch, there is no shade. We were lucky it was December but us poor Northerners still managed to burn in the midwinter sun. Take a hat, parasol and lots of cream and water.

Your wife could walk to the centre square (about 600m up hill), into the main courtyard. From there you could see most of the site.
