Breath Taking Experience

The sheer expanse of this place is mind-boggling. The pyramids are steep, but so worth the effort. So glad we made the trip!

The scale and beauty of this place can only be appreciated in person. It's amazing how much of this site still remains and the condition it's all in. To really appreciate it, I'd recommend hiring a knowledgable guide. We used Luis Ramirez for a full-day tour that included Monte Alban, and he was excellent.

There are many options for visiting Mount Alban and we elected to go with a tour company we found close to our hotel. There is no need to book more than a day ahead and you can choose to combine visiting other sites to make it a full day out of the city. We took the half day tour and... More

Signed up not expecting much more than a little side trip out of the city and possible views from 8,000 ft above sea level. So I was amazed at this extensive 2500+ year old excavated site. Very different from the Mayan ruins further south. Our English speaking guide was excellent. Well worth the time and money.

Get a tour guide! This place is full of stories and ingenuity beyond its years. Get lost in history and marvel at this ancient civilization. Great views of Oaxaca. Wear sunscreen and good walking shoes. Don't miss these extensive ruins!

A "half-day" tour (two hours on site) was insufficient time for wandering and exploring. Not sure that other guided options exist.

Monte Alban is an excellent example of the Zapotec culture.Be sure to take a guided tour. It is well worth it. Expect to spend at least 2 hours at the site.

The archaeological sites are an important part in understanding the origins, the art the structure of many city states, which were dominated by Zapotecs, Mixtecs, finally by Aztecs, before the Spanish which left this area less devastated than others, because the mineral riches if Mexico wereto be found elsewhere.

This place is spectacular. Set amongst the mountains of Oaxaca with sweeping views of the hillside and the site. Climbing these stairs is not half as scary as Teotihuan - where I did admittedly get the leg wobbles. We got a mini bus from a tour company for 150 pesos and I think its 60 to get in. Its about... This pre-Columbian archeological site is truly impressive. Though only 10% of the site is available for visit (about 80% has not been dugged out yet, and another 10% is located on a nearby mountain at a different location), it is a large site where you can walk around and have a good feel of life in this lost civilisation. The... More
