Hey everybody-- There's some conflicting information on TA about Fortin, so I wanted to post an update. I live in Oaxaca, so thought a 'locals' perspective might be helpful here, rather than somebody who has just gone up here once or twice. The gist of it is that this IS STILL AN UNSAFE area. In fact, the US State Department... More

Sorry to learn that some visitors to Cerro del Fortin came into harm's way. I spent October 2015 in Oaxaca and ran/walked the escaleras (stairs) and road to the planetarium almost every morning and early evening. Never had any problem with people and experienced a number of pleasant exchanges with other Oaxaquenos who regularly walk the stairs and hill. In... More

Careful. I really wish I'd read up before we went. Up to planetarium is probably ok but even then I'd be careful. We pushed on and were robbed of everything at knifepoint at the next peak. Very scary experience and the only bad thing I've ever experienced in Mexico. So really, I would recommend giving this whole outing a miss... More

Cerro del Fortín is the hill above Oaxaca de Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico. There is a long stairwell up to the obvious and impressive Auditorio Guelaguetza and further road walking up to the planetarium. This makes for a pleasant uphill workout although perhaps best travelled in a group. There is a trail above which wanders up to the top of El... More

Walk up the steps near Mercado Sanchez Pascuas to the Guelatguetza Auditorio and beyond to the Planetarium and Observatory and then beyond along the trails up and into the forest for great exercise and views of downtown and the valley towards Etla. This walk is best done in the cool of the morning but I am guessing it is also... More

The view is stunning at Benito's statue. By NO means walk on the the Cerro del Fortin trail behind the Planetario Nuadehui! Two friends have been recently held up at knife point. Two women (mother and daughter) and a man and woman! Three men came out of the bushes, showed a knife and took everything of value. BEWARE

this is to update my review of February 2012. My Oaxacan friends say there have been recent muggings on the hill so go early in the morning when there are many walkers and joggers and it is cool temperature. I would plan to be off the hill before 10;30 as the hill is pretty deserted aftr that ... except on... More

Just before the Observatorio, there is a dirt road that takes off to the right...you can follow it for about a mile, providing nice views of the town

I hike this all the time for exercise and the views. If you go from town then there are more stairs but you have the option of taking a taxi to halfway up the stairs. Once you get past the stairs it is a pleasant easy uphill walk along the ridge. Total return walk from downtown is 2 to 3... More

We were mugged walking along the trail to Cerro del Fortin. Afterwards, numerous Oaxacans said that they had heard of similar things happening there before and that they did not recommend the area for tourists.
