These guys are awsome and as they say, "dont try this at home".!!! Their feet and bodies are tied to the top of a tall pole about as high as a 7 story building. Then they jump and slowly unravel their ropes while hanging upside down and swinging around the pole until they reach the end of their ropes and land on the ground unharmed !! One guy even stays on top of the pole and plays a Mayan flute. I have seen these guys in both Cancun,(Xcaret) and the ruins of Taijin in Veracruz. Good show, guys !!!

We caught this in Paplanto and I think beginning to end, it was about 20 minutes. Our guide had told us the cost would be 30 MXP. Someone tried to charge me 50 MXP and I refused so they accepted the 30 MXP. Record a video with your cell phone. The performers will happily do group photos after the event is over.

We watched los Voladores of Papantla three times! Twice outside of El Tajin, and once in Papantla city center. There are several performances per day, and the suggested donation runs from 20 to 50 pesos (higher for foreigners). The performance runs approx. 30 mins. It is good to have binoculars. There is no information given out on the ritual except for what you can find on the internet. A definite must see!

We saw this show by the pyramids at El Tajin, and again in the city of Papantla near the church in the zocalo. They put on an amazing show, and we were impressed by how gracefully they performed this dangerous and historic ceremony.

My wife and I live less than two hours' bus ride from Papantla. We visited only for a weekend, but plan to return. The voladores perform every hour daily from 9am to 6pm. We talked with them and took pictures of course, for a small tip. They are very friendly. Their performance is impressive, majestic, and a cultural gem for all of Mexico. I was surprised that they continued to perform, even in the rain! However, we found the slight drizzle to be refreshing since for 8 months or so of the year triple digit temps are the norm. . . . A charming performance and a lovely town.

This is an old indigenous tradition symbolizing the year ahead. As I am a Skydiver I find it very interesting since the discipline I practice is head down flying or freefly...plus if you know some history of the Mexican people, it adds to your culture.
It is a surviving prehispanic tradition.

The flyers of Papantla are a representation of what is believed was part of a ceremony, the people from Tajin are known as the people of wind, it requires a lot of skills to participate in this representation.

This is one of the more amazing things we experienced during our trip to the Veracruz region. Having 4 men launching themselves down, tied to a rope and twirling upside down to the music of a flute played by a 5th man dancing on top of the 30 meter pole, was exhilarating. It made our 4 hour trip to Tajin even more worthwhile.
