Ancient football stadium

Just imagine that you are playing football and got executed, if you lose it. Not funny, huh? :)) impressive place with all those stories and ancient rings on the walls.

Canadian James Naismith, inventor of basketball, probably went to Chichen Itza and saw the rules here. However, in full accordance with the norms of the enlightened nineteenth century, made the game more humane. Naismith that allowed the ball. The Maya could only play the knees, elbows and hips. They didn't read Darwin and Engels and did not know that the... More

Decent site...gave us a perspective of the Mayan culture. Our guide was really knowledgeable and gave us an explanation about some of the rules of the game. Death was just one point away!

How did they manage to pass a ball in the loops with their hips beats me. Probably the referee within their small huts could have answered. Truly the most amazing playing field ever constructed.

Another impressive place in the Chichen Itza area. This huge area give us an idea how they play ball here, the architecture is amazing as well. This historic area left to us, is a reminder of what a smart civilization they were.

Really cool place! Specially the acoustic is awesome, it would be sweet if they still had a demonstration game today.

I am no Mayan expert but there are some pretty amazing friezes under the two rings. Pictures of decapitated heads with 7 strands of blood shooting out! This is what happened if you lost the game! Tough.
