During the pandemic, to enter the market, you had to have your temperature checked and hands sanitized. Kudos to Merida for implementing good protective measures.

The agua frescas and fruits were abundant and cheap. Found a shoe repair store where they added a zipper to a bag that didn't have it and sewed a tennis shoes where there was the beginning of a whole around the big toe, the work was impressive and very cheap.

Highly recommend the market as it's vibrant, filled with sights. You can buy Copal incense and lot's of fruits and vegetables.

If you have spirit... get to this market. If you want to see the gears of the machine they call Merida... Get here! You will say time and time again...What the @#$@!

Filled to the brim with all items of sale. You will know you are in Mexico Market Place when you enter here! The Mecca of Markets in the Yucatan. Scavenge the rows of venders... do a hunt. Draw straws for the pound of pet food... Or baby chickens. Make a day of it... but be wise and eat first. This will open the eyes of any American Tourist to how the economy works. The deals are everywhere. The same Guayabara shirts sold in boutique around the city can be bought at a fraction of the cost. Get your haggle on and deal. They will and do price match. Tatoos, hairstylist, barbers, animals, butchers, repair service, fruits, vegatable, spices, furniture, hardware,on and on! A must for the enthusiastic traveler. If you are uptight...pretentious...and above the common folks... Please stay up North, this is the real Mercado De Merida por la gente de Mexico y amigos de libre vida.

It goes on for about 7 blocks, it winds and twists, I could buy a piece of raw meat or a cheap souvenir or clothes or a taco. It was the first and last place I visited in Merida. I bought jewelry and other stuff here. I loved the vibe. You have to love walking with a lot of people and looking around. Too cool to describe.

The Lucas de Galvez market is mindbogglingly large and cramped, even for Mexican standards. Not as neat and interesting as in, say, Oaxaca, but well worth a visit. We specifically like to eat breakfast upstairs in the two-story building part of the market, visible from the street near the City Museum. There you get Yucatecan food that has not been dumbed down for gringo tourists. The Artisanas, i.e. handicraft, part of the market upstairs I feel has priced itself out of the market, so to speak. You find better bargains in the small stores when walking away from the market towards the main square.
When you tire of the market, go across the street to the old postal building which is now the City Museum of Merida. Small, but with some interesting displays of life in Merida a hundred years ago.

The main city market, Lucas de Galvez Market, was crowded, dirty, beautiful, and fascinating. Every section had an extensive number of stalls and every section felt different from the last. Tropical fruits, fresh fish and ceviche stands, vegetables, chiles galore, sauces, seasonings, tortilla makers, the stands filled with pumpkin seasonings and sauces, achiote, recados, and all kinds of dead animals and organs, finally sweets. We were greeted by friendly people and got to sample some great food, such as cochinita tacos with chicharron with pickled onions, organ and blood sausage, crispy pork, tamarind sweets, and merenges.

Make sure you map this place because we found no signage and no one around seemed to know it by name. But when you find it you are in (if you enjoy raucous markets) for a treat. All your senses will be in alert. The food stalls sell fantastic street food at ridiculously low prices. Giant tamales wrapped in banana leafs for $1!! Pork and salsa sandwiches for $2. It's crazy good and the people watching is off the charts.

This is a local market with a very wide variety of food stuffs, food vendors, clothing, hardware, etc, etc. etc. It seems to go on for ever. Lots to see and can be very busy. It was really enjoyable just to walk around and see all the things for sale. I am Canadian and we really do not have anything like it at home. Worth a visit if you want to see the real Mexico.

A very large market that has everything under the sun from mounds of dried chilies and herbs, to animals to taco stands. There are tons of people selling different meats and vegetables to fish. Definitely worth a walk around.

Be ready for sensory overload: colors, smells, music, being carried along a stream of people. It is beautiful and overwhelming. Try something new to you, ask questions. Go without expectations and enjoy!

We arrived with a list of products from a friend who was going to prepare tacos for us.
Is was a pleasure going through the immense market trying to find just 5 ingredients. No one pushed us, everybody was polite, directing us to the stalls selling the produce we needed.
It was vibrating, exhilarating, particularly after having spent several days in the sleepy beautiful neighbouring Valladolid.
Highly recommended!
