Riviera Maya refers to the whole area around Playa del Carmen and south. There are many resorts, natural wonders, attractions and beaches all along here. The people are lovely, kind and accommodating. I am always amazed and awed by the beauty of this area.

I wouldn't go back to Playa del Carmen. Tourist trap with very pushy vendors. The same items can be bought at your resort gift shops for the same price and without the harassment. I thought we would see some Mexican culture here but it was just a tourist shopping trap.

If staying in the Mayan, you have to take a trip to Playa del Carmen. It's wonderful. Lots of shops, bars, and a beautiful beach. Make sure you convert your dollars to pesos though. Things are so much cheaper. For example, the public transit costs 30 pesos or $3 US per person per direction to get to Playa from the... More

I strongly recommend Tulum a bit south for a more relaxing and beautiful "beach experience", but the strong side of Playa del Carmen is of course that it's very lively and a lot of restaurant and bars along the beach to enjoy and meet new people at. Lunching along the beach is a vital part of any vacation to PDC... More

This is one of the great spots on the planet. Being so close to the US makes it the perfect destination. Stay away from Spring Break and head down for a great adventure. I've been to the Seychelles and Maldives, from Philippines to the Red Sea and the water here is as good as any. As a SCUBA diver, the... More

Area has grown and in a good way! street performers are amazing- small shops friendly and the larger high end shops are reasonable. I love what they have done with the area keeping it well maintained.
