Sian Ka'an Adventure

The Sian Ka’an biosphere is more that 1 million acres (404,686 hectares) in size and is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico. Also somewhat remote and lacking major hiking trails, it’s best visited with a guide. Discover the reserve by boat, visiting Boca Paila Lagoon and Ascension Bay with a guide, snorkeling and searching for marine life along the way. Plus, a Caribbean lunch at Punta Allen—located at the very end of the Boca Paila Peninsula—is included.

During this in-depth guided tour from Tulum, you’ll explore the jungle-filled ruins and hop aboard a lagoon cruise for a scenic ride through mangroves and orchids, followed by a delicious vegetarian lunch.

This excursion was a highlight of my visit, having the perfect balance of nature, adventure, relaxation, and unique activities. From climbing up the tower for a spectacular view of the lagoon and learning so much about the Mayan culture, to a delicious vegetarian lunch (vegan chorizo!) and using the life jacket as a "diaper" to float down the crystal-clear lagoon, the day kept getting better and better! Our tour guide, Alberto, was the cherry on top - he was professional, funny, and really made our group feel special (even making a playlist for the bride!) The company, and its guides, seems to be very passionate about the environment and ecosystem, which I appreciated, so don't forget your coral-friendly bug spray/sun lotion.

Absolutely recommend this tour! Our tour guide Karen was very informative and you could tell she has a tremendous passion for marine life. She and the boat captains did everything possible for us to see as much wildlife. We saw a crocodile just 5 minutes into the tour! We also got to see a mama and baby manatee, which Karen mentioned it's extremely rare to spot any. So we got lucky! We also go to see a sea turtle and dolphins. Our trip was during high mating season for dolphins so we got to witness male dolphins courting female dolphins which was beautiful! We also go to see tons of different birds. The snorkeling was also very beautiful. We then headed to the lagoon in Punta Allen which is a small fisherman town. The water was turquoise blue. Amazing! We swam there for about 45 minutes. We then had lunch: fried fish, bbq chicken, white rice, mash potatoes, and handmade corn tortillas. It wasn't anything fancy, but it was good. Afterwards, Karen gave us a small tour around the pueblo. I could have honestly done without this part because it was extremely hot and the tour was about a 15 min walk. Overall, I highly recommend this your! If you love wildlife I highly recommend visiting Sian Ka'an. And ask for Karen. She's amazing!

We made our tour of Sian Ka'an and we keep a wonderful memory of it. Our guide Marie indeed knew how to reveal us all the magnificent facets of this natural reserve: patient, pedagogue, passionate, she allowed us to spend a wonderful moment that we will never forget. We saw several animals while paying particular attention not to disturb them. The trip also went very well: our driver Mario and Marie made it very safe and pleasant. We recommend it 100%!

My wife/travel guide found this tour on Trip Advisor and it was highly reccommended so the bar was set high for our expectations . We were blown away! Our guide, Marco was the absolute best. We plan on returning and will request Marco if possible. He was not only knowledgable but had a very calm and connecting soul. We got to know him personally fairly quickly during the pre tour and travel to our destination. My wife gets car sick and sea sick easily and took medication prior to the one hour ride on rough roads. Marco constantly throughout the tour was checking on her condition which spoke volumes of his empathy as a guide. He even offered to allow her to sit in the front seat of the van and reccommended a back seat on the boat to reduce her symptoms. We had a French family and a swiss couple with our tour and I am sure they felt the same way about Marco. Our boat captain was Oscar who was also extremely knowledgable of the nature reserve and was an excellent pilot. He as well was very pleasant and personable adding to our enjoyment. His Mayan background was a definite asset giving a local perspective. The boats cruise at 30+ mph and only carry 6 persons per boat. Everything was so beautiful and interesting that my wife never got sea sick. She actually loved the boat and wants to do it again. Where we went: through mangroves in a HUGE( like a bay) lagoon. What we saw: underwater lagoon cenotes where we saw manatees grazing, a resting crocodile and a small mid lagoon island bird sanctuary. Where we went: the bay which is approximately 20 miles by 20 miles of the most amazing turquoise water we have ever seen. What we saw: wild dolphins playing doing leaps and mid air spins. A beautiful pristine bay of turquoise under blue skies on an enjoyable relatively fast boat. Where we went: snorkeling along the barrier reef. Saw many beautiful fish. A large barracuda slipped away before the majority of the group could see it so keep your eyes open. The coral reef is amazing and I learned so much about it and how to help protect it. We then stopped for a dip in the natural pool along the shore in the bay. It was peaceful and relaxing. Lastly we had lunch at a fishing village with old charm. The owners were so proud to serve you and share there small town culture. The hibiscus infused water was refreshingly delicious. After lunch we headed back through the lagoon and then driven back to our resort.
