As part of a road trip through Northern Portugal I visited part of the National Park, including Vilarinho das Furnas. The Dam it super high but most impressive of all is the dramatic landscape it creates in the surrounding area. And I loved the wild saffron blooming all over the place! You can do several hikes here, or if you don’t feel like moving, just have a picnic while enjoying the stunning views. This place made me very enthusiastic to visit other parts of the National Park on my next road trip.

Beautiful setting with views of the lake and surrounding mountains. You can walk along the top of the dam. Water level was high so the village was not visible.

This dam, although off the beaten track, is worth a visit. Built in 1972, it is 92 meters high. The Cávado River forms a lake that submerged a village, whose ruined houses can be seen in periods of drought.

One of the many dams in the national park which provide the lakeside scenery, this dam permits access to a circular route on the western side of the park. An interesting diversion close to the dam is the beaten earth road which follows the southern end of the lake. One must drive very carefully as it is often narrow with passing places and not always with barriers on bends or sheer drops. We didn't visit the sunken remains of Vilharino days Fumas village, as they are eerie places of ghoulish appeal. This area of wilderness could treat you to views of birds of prey, as it did us on our journey.

Has a nice view but I guess all the views in Gerês are in general beatifull; the Dam itself is not a big deal

An impressive view over the mountains and the water. Also, at night, it feels huge and even respectful because you barely have lights over there.

If you want a very quite and "private" lake area this is the place, away from the crowds and urban areas. Just be careful with the underwater remain stones (remains of a submerged village), but rather than that it is a lovely place for a nice sunbath.

It's an historical dam that flooded the Lindoso village in the 70s. You can still see some traces of some of the old buildings.
