About
Escape to the shores of the majestic Lake Timiskaming, where peace and beauty await you just a few hours away from the big city. Built on a site used by the Algonquin people for over 1,000 years, Fort Témiscamingue-Obadjiwan was once an important trading post. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the fort played a strategic role in the ongoing struggle between the French and British for control of the fur trade in the Upper Ottawa and Hudson Bay basins. Take part in a culturally enriching experience in harmony with nature, at this historical meeting place where people traded goods.

We visited here when National Parks were free in 2017 and it was definitely worth the visit. No one else was here and we enjoyed the informative interactions with the guides and enjoyed especially walking the nature trail. Really cool place to visit when it was free. I don't think we would have gone here and paid. Spent a couple hours exploring the grounds. Was definitely worth the visit.

A great outdoor activity for every age! There is much walking involved so be sure to have some good shoes on and everything you need for a bit of a distance away from buildings or vehicles. Awesome displays and amazing staff!!! Welcoming, informative, helpful and kind, all staff we crossed paths with were truly exceptional! All displays are kept up, clean and well done. There are plaques everywhere, with explanations in both French and English, to explain all the displays. Bring cash if you are planning on buying from the gift shop and a meal or snacks if you are staying for a while. You can sit by the lake to enjoy a bite after during or before your visit. All around, this is a great family outing. It could probably be somewhat of a romantic excursion as well. My grandson (2 1/2) enjoyed it. The Enchanted forest just adds to an already enjoyable adventure. I would recommend this whether you are local or a traveller.

We went camping at the Park next to the Fort and went through the outdoor interactive museum. It is very well kept and we really enjoyed the interactive displays and the Enchanted Forest. I would definitely recommend this to anyone. The staff was very knowledgeable. We took the time to watch a 15 min movie about the Voyagers and it was well worth the time. Sure makes us think about the hardships they endured with a smile. It is set on the beautiful Lake Temiskaming as the backdrop.

We went to the fort today. It is very reasonably priced and extremely clean. The outside displays are very well maintained and the grounds well kept. It is an easy stroll and the view of the lake is wonderful. There is lots of empty space and hopefully they will add more displays in the future. Overall a very nice outing with lots of historical information.

I visited this wonderful place twice, once with my daughter's class and another time as an organized group. Our guide was bilingual and very knowledgeable, he explained about the trades and the way of life back then. It's different since you can explore and listen to stories inside and then continue the tour outdoors. On a hot day, this place is just wonderful, since it's located beside the lake and it's always breezy. We ended up in a petrified enchanted forest, where our guide told of an ancient story which enchanted the trees. This place makes for a wonderful location for amazing pictures. The fort provides picnic tables on the beach for those who bring a lunch.

I loved this museum/historic site! Very different from your average dry museum displays. A lot it is set up outdoors and we went on a beautiful day so it was great to walk around to the different stations and learn about life in the area during the fur trade. Very scenic with lots of nice spots for photography.
