This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the area where Acadians settled in on the tidal marshland on the shores of the Minas Basin the 1600's. Unfortunately, they were deported during the French and Indian War in the mid-1700s and many wound up in Louisiana. The memorial church, beautiful grounds and gardens are well worth a visit. I particularly liked a sculpture of an Acadian family during deportation when thousands were taken from their ancestral homeland. The Evangeline sculpture in front of the memorial church became a symbol of the history of the Deportation and an example of the resiliency of the Acadian people. This fictional character was made famous in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie.

If you are interested in history this is a stop you should see. You hear of the deportation, but when you are standing on the shore looking across the Minas Basin you can almost feel the loneliness of waiting to go. This is a place you should see during a visit to Grand Pre.

The cross memorial and marker plate help bring an understanding of the life of the early settlers. Go at low tide to get a good feel for the walk those who were deported had to make across the mud flats to reach the boats which would take them away from their homes. Being from the southern USA some friends are in the family tree of those deported so maybe it means a little more to me for that reason. A little confusing to get to but turn off Wharf Rd immediately after the Curry Knoll Farms entrance and go to the end of that dirt road
