This is the place to see how true shopping malls function. Give at least an hour to wander over all of the stalls to watch the action, see what everyone is selling and even make a few purchases (bring pesos). The place is a treasure from the past. I hope it never changes (there is also a shiny new huge... More

A wonderful place to walk around and enjoy the entire experience. It is a true local mercado so appreciate even the unknown. I tasted Chapulín ( grasshopper) today for the first time. Crunchy, spicy, salty & apparently a delicacy & very high protein. Go to one of the juice stalls & let them make you a delicious Green drink or... More

We immensely enjoyed walking around El Mercado picking up fish, Oaxaca cheese, and fruit. It's a must if you like seeing new things.

It's not just shopping, it's an experience! Tips: -Visit on a Saturday or Wednesday morning. -Bring shopping bags, save the planet! -Stroll up and down ALL of the aisles and don't miss anything -It's a feast for your eyes so became full where you walk, the ground is a maze. -If you don't leave with fresh food or a new... The Mercado ( market) is a really cool place for everyone. Being from Canada it is not something we were use toseeing. You can get everything from seafood, meats fresh vegetables/fruits, cheeses, handcrafted items, clothes, toys flowers, etc The market is covered but open aired. Best time to go is in the morning when it is not too hot and... More

An endless array of fresh fruits & vegetables, fish, poultry, air-dried meats, spices & condiments, Oaxacan coffee, chocolate, and Mescal, plus a massive number of food stands and juice bars. You can also find textiles, clothes, shoes, bags, and toys for the kids. Go in the morning when things are in full gear and plan on spending 2-3 hours at... More

It is far away from everything else but it is worth visiting to see a real local market. I always go to the chocolate store right outside the Mercado to pick up coffee, hot chocolate mixes, and mole sauce. Inside the market, you can find every possible produce for very cheap.

Its a bit away from everything else, but worth it if you want to get away from the beach for a half day. The comedores in the market will give a nice local tasty lunch for a great price, and you can stroll around the market for a while after to pick up some souvenirs, t-shirts, etc.

We visited El Mercado on a busy Saturday morning, shopping for fresh fruits and vegetables for our ten-day stay. We bought lots of great food, including a large fillet of mahi mahi (enough for two delicious meals). We also bought a few other things, but all in all what a great experience!

we spent 5 weeks in Puerto and shopped for our vegetables and fruit on a regular basis at the Mercado. You can find any type of fruit and vegetables under the sun and they are always fresh. We were amazed as to how much we could bye for very little money. The visit alone is very worthwhile as you will... More
